January 7, we held a viewing of DVD of "in London Concert 25th Anniversary Phantom of the Opera", after the viewing, Ms. Akemi Nishio (write an essay of "The Phantom of the Opera"), Mr. Shuhei Shibata (write an essay of "Les Miserables"), discussion with Yoko Yamagata librarian. <To watch the Phantom of the Opera> Yamagata/ Shibata, Today is your first time to watch this DVD. What did you think? Shibata/ It was very interesting. Strange in the picture story is based on a theater stage, that they see it in the theater audience It is a feeling. It was also a set of gorgeous costumes stage. Have a sense of realism outré using, such as a screen, amazing. And it is wonderful story. Nishio/ I watched many times. I impressed every times. Every Songs is great. None of the songs is a masterpiece. Yamagata/ To celebrate the 25th anniversary performance of "The Phantom of the Opera" musical, DVD This is a picture of the stage, which is only two days of performances at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Made the stage so gorgeous for only two days, it is a work of a very luxurious gathered a great cast. It is composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, he is genius. This work has been put has feelings for Sarah Brightman at the time of his wife Christine, who played the original. This DVD is a video of the performance, the presence of the stage of musical taste. So I chose to watch this. Did empathize with any character? Shibata/ Raul he is cool. I will help Christine! He is very cool. Nishio/ Yipe! Why Raul. Usually empathize with phantom? Shibata/ I feel phantom is too pushy, I just do not think. Yamagata/ It may be so, if the person like phantom reality appear. It is perhaps stalker. However, this is the story of the stage. I think very mythical story. There are many stories that similar to in the Mesopotamian mythology and such as Greek mythology and Japan. One is the myth of death and rebirth. This is the case, "Izanami and Izanagi" in Japanese mythology, “Persephone and Hades" "Orpheus" in Greek mythology. Another one mythology is the story of marriage with God or Holy Spirit. It is a marriage of human and non-human. Holy marriage. "Cupid and Psyche" in Greek mythology, “God marriage of mountain Miwa" in Japan mythology. In this case, it seems that form "must find the truth" or “Was forbidden to see the sight of God or Holy Spirit. But see the sight of God or Holy Spirit. And difficult thing is happen”. "Beauty and the Beast" and “Bird wife “are this type story. <A good work to shake the feeling various> Nishio/ When I writing essay, there was a lot to I wish to write. And because it is my own interpretation or rather a variety of perspectives on this story at any given time, I write the essay is very difficult. Yamagata/ Well as theater and film, novels and poetry as well, very deep, excellent work, so shake the feeling different, gives us the impression variety at any given time. I might feel different things even after reading the same book, when you are teenager, when you at the time of the 30s, when you are old age. Also, if it is possible to know the status and historical background, such as when the author made the work, it is a different impression. I think, when happy when sad, it show you a variety of views on each occasion. Because I do not like that language tests "like this is a correct interpretation". Be honest your excitement of the time. It's great to meet a variety of good work, you can experience the excitement and variety. Did you feel any interpretation of the scene is difficult to specifically ,Nishio. Nishio/ It is the last scene back to the ground apart Christine and Raul and Phantom. I think she chose Raul, but phantom was a very important person for Christine. Yamagata/ Mr. Shibata you look like saying, "Hey, hey Christine, Decide. One!" Shibata/ I mean, even back to the phantom ring, I think in this goodbye, it would be me, Yamagata/ Ha-ha. Nishio/ Yipe, <Beautiful voice> Yamagata/ There is a surprise and singing five actors Sarah Brightman has played the phantom of the past in the stage after the curtain call. Nishio, you like the voice of John Owen-Jones among them. I prepared CD of original Phantom of the Opera in London cast Michael Crawford Phantom of the Opera, Colm Wilkinson, Sarah Brightman and John Owen-Jones CD. I will loan you them, than please listen to at home. Nisho/ I'm very happy. Though it is quite old he is a good voice Mr. Colm, I wanted to listen to the voice of his young age. Yamagata/ Mr. Colm is beautiful voice filled with sorrow and compassion, Mr. John Owen beautiful voice like starlight feel scary. Yamagata/ I love the voice of (Anthoy Warlow) Anthony. It is a deep voice sound is clean. In the spring of last year, I heard the voice of Mr. Anthony for the first time in this DVD, because the voice wonderful, I will look on the Internet variety of singing Anthony more than just the music of Phantom of the Opera. And I ordered a lot of CD from Australia I. Have heard on a daily basis, and some songs such as "Music of the Night", "This is the moment", "Now" are more than 200 times already heard. Unfortunately, Mr. Anthony CD of Phantom of the Opera starring is out I do not. Why do CD is not out, I'm very strange. But I do not lend to people even if you have. Nishio/ Ha-ha. Yamagata/ I have not becoming a singer fan since childhood. So when my friends talking about fan singers at school, I felt very strange. Anthony's voice, teach me. I found such a feeling. Even when sad, even when angry, when I remember the voice of Mr. Anthony I feel happy and smile. Someday, I want to visit Australia to hear the voice of Anthony's. Nishio/ I think so. * Phantom of five is, Colm Wilkinson, John Owen-Jones, Anthoy Warlow, Peter Joback, and Ramin Karimloo played the phantom in this performance. < Phantom and Raoul lottery of Library> Yamagata/ Today, please pull out the lottery until per. Nishio Shibata / Yay Shibata/ Suddenly came out! Is number 16! Yamagata/ It is clear files Snape of Harry Potter ... number 16. It was good with a good thing ... more. Shibata/ Huh? I'm glad. Snape, first I think he is a bad person, and finally, I do not think. He was cool very good man. Nishio/ II know it certainly, But ... Snape. Yamagata/ Snape and Raul..... You understand and like the people who have a sincere chivalry. Mr. Shibata, Shibata/ Oh, is also per-second piece. Maybe in this year will be good. Yamagata/ Congratulations. number 17 is the pouch. Nishio/ I'm pulling a lot all the time, I, I do not hit at all. I pull rapidly. · · · I got lot edge, to 22 times. Yamagata/ Here, you will change the weak luck of this year. Nishio/ Oh, finally came out per. This is number 11. Yamagata/ Congratulations, it is a kaleidoscope. "The mirror" It was the song appeared in the phantom. Nishio/ The lot, came out after seeing two of the three outliers. This is number 21. Yamagata/ It looks your weak luck is changing strong luck. No. 21 is a mini back. Congratulations. <Les Miserables> Yamagata/ Mr. Shibata, I hear you went to see the "Les Miserables" movie published in the winter holiday. Shibata/ Yes. I was very impressed. It was a really great story. I was also good song. Yamagata/ This is not a stage performance, in the library we are holding that the concert version of Les Miserable 25th Anniversary. Complete set of classic works, I cried to a song "Bring him home" I am also among them Les Miserable. It is a song to pray to God in the scene where Jean Valjean in desperate help Marius, Marius is lover of Cosette. Although I would like to go to the movie, I have not done so already busy end of the year.

  • The Celluloid Christ: Godspell Church of the Saviour Lenten Study - 2011 (Leader: Lejf E
9 VIEWING GUIDE: Godspell (1973 D. Greene) The Celluloid Christ: Godspell Church of the Saviour Lenten Study - 2011 (leader: Lejf E. Knutson) 9 “The characters in Godspell can be looked at in two ways, and both are inspired. On one hand, these people could literally be Jesus, John, and the disciples, in a story updated to modern day New York. With this approach, their colorful outfits, face-painting, and childish antics truly puts into perspective how bizarre and radical Jesus’ actions must have been in first century Israel, and yet these people are filled with so much joy and happiness that, much like in The Apostle, we find their lifestyle contagious. On the other hand, I choose to view this film not as a literal update of Christ’s life, but as a group of radicals living in New York embracing the teachings of Christ as a lifestyle. As a result, they are simply playing the life of Christ out to get a better understanding of his ideas. Either way, the message is the same: Be yourself, be radical, push the envelope, and love one another. Godspell is a film breathing with life and joy.”1 “In anything remotely resembling something that could begin to be called a religious sense, Godspell is a zero; it’s Age-of Aquarius Love fed through a quasi-gospel funnel, with a few light-hearted supernatural touches. ”2 “Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out – Find God” – David Greene’s Godspell (1973) I concluded my discussion of The Gospel According to St. Matthew with a deliberately (or hopefully) provocative statement: “What would a Jesus film look like if it tried to present Jesus preaching his revolutionary, world-upsetting ethos of the kingdom in the here and now, in the heart of the modern city?” – and then suggested that Godspell would be an answer to that question.

This year was different only in that we were joined by Lear deBessonet, who will begin her tenure as my successor next season. • QUINCY SYMPHONY CHORUS PROGRAM NOTES British Invasion ~ March 9, 2019 Dr
QUINCY SYMPHONY CHORUS PROGRAM NOTES British Invasion ~ March 9, 2019 Dr. Carol Mathieson Andrew Lloyd Webber relaunched musical theatre in the 1960’s in ways that welcomed electronic technology and rock music without allowing ephemeral fads to highjack well-crafted composition. And audiences responded, with younger aficionados swelling the general flock to the theatres. Tonight’s medley follows chronologically from earliest efforts with Tim Rice to turn Jesus Christ, Superstar— a scripture story recast in rock, produced as a concept album with basic plot, all the songs, and minimal dialog—into a stage show, opening in London’s West End. It was a mega-hit. Soon after came Evita about the Perón dictatorship in Argentina. Rice did not feel comfortable remolding established writing into lyrics, so for Cats, Lloyd Webber went directly to T.S. Eliot’s poetry. Song and Dance is a short musical play with lyrics by Don Black, paired with a short ballet with music Lloyd Webber wrote for his cellist brother Julien as variations on a Paganini caprice. However, Phantom of the Opera, with Charles Hart lyrics, was back to high drama. Phantom smashed attendance records in both London and New York, running for decades. Tonight’s medley opens and closes with songs from that iconic show. Nineteenth-century English musical theatre consisted of cheerful song and dance revues or badly translated, risqué French burlesques until Gilbert and Sullivan brought satirical, silly Savoy Operas to a family-friendly stage. QSC sings highlights from the first and the final masterpieces of these saviors of both the English and American musical stage.
