From the Diary of Emanuel Ringelblum on Preparations for Resistance in the Warsaw Ghetto The famed Uprising, in April and May, 1943 in the Warsaw Ghetto, is universally regarded as a turning point, an absolutely new departure, not only in the chronicles of Jewish resistance to the German oppressor, but also in the history of the general struggle for the liberation of Warsaw. This was the first time when Jews took part in a major, indeed large-scale battle of that struggle. For the first time, after the defeat in 1939, the thunder of cannon and the echoing clutter of machine-guns were heard again in the capital city of Poland. The Jewish Uprising induced changes in the struggle of the Polish underground movement, which until then had concentrated its efforts mainly on acts of sabotage, and on acquiring arms and ammunition by disarming German soldiers and police. April 19, 1943, became a symbol of the Jewish public’s contribution to the fight for freedom from the Nazi regime, and a motivating factor in the war of the Polish underground. “Little Stalingrad” Defends Itself April 1943 was approaching, a memorable date in the history of Warsaw Jewry, the date of the liquidation of the Jews in Warsaw. The illegal government in the Ghetto, the O.B. [Jewish Combat Organiztion], prepared energetically for its defence. Considerable funds were obtained by terror from war profiteers who would not have given a penny voluntarily. The unwilling ones or their families were kidnapped in broad daylight and taken to secret flats until they paid the levy, amounting to tens of thousands and sometimes even hundreds of thousands of zloty. -

RULES OF THE PROFESSOR JAN ZACHWATOWICZ INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION for the best master’s-degree works performed at the institutions of higher learning concerned with the cultural heritage protection issues The Annual Prize awarded in the ICOMOS Poland Competition (Resolution of ICOMOS-Poland Board, 4th January 2012 and 12th June 2015) I. Purpose Promotion of the issues related to the protection and conservation of monuments of cultural heritage of towns and landscape among students of colleges of architecture, fine arts and conservation. II. Subject and Issues Covered 1. The subject of the Competition are the master’s-degree theses that address the issues of the cultural heritage protection in a novel approach in the architectural or city planning dimensions, which have been completed in the current or last calendar year. 2. The subjects covered by the works eligible for the Competition comprise design and study works in the areas: - protection and restoration of historical city planning structures, - adaptation of historical buildings to present-day needs, - environmental protection and the protection of cultural landscape, - protection of historic parks and gardens, - revitalisation of ex-industrial areas and buildings, - protection of castles and defence layouts. III. Prizes and Honourable Mentions The prizes and honourable mentions awarded in the Professor Jan Zachwatowicz ICOMOS -Poland International Competition are in the form of money and a diploma. The sponsors for the prizes are Mrs Krystyna Zachwatowicz-Wajda and Mr Andrzej Wajda who each year donate for this purpose a constant amount of money. The amount received is each time allotted to the prizes and honourable mentions by the Jury. -

Consequently one can find in museums numerous catering offers such as cafes, bistros, snack bars, restaurants, pubs and wine bars. The material presented is the result of theoretical and field studies carried out in the selected open air museums in Poland and focused on newly introduced commercial activities (as catering). Our research results show that the development of sustainable cultural tourism as a generator of income in the open air rural muse- ums is important in the challenging economic time. Museums having catering ser- vices of different character could easier overcome financial struggle. Moreover there is no doubt that the introduction of an interesting and ambitious cuisine in the restau- rants located in the rural open air museum is of great importance also in other terms: popularization of the food culture, rural tradition of region, healthy diet and lifestyle, chance to increase the museum attractiveness, important economic support to the museum and the local community and the improvement of living quality. The architec- tonic shape of the reconstructed Royal Castle, as well as the design of its interi- ors, were shaped through power struggles that were informed by two main sets of values: one referred to the legitimising (or questioning) of the present politi- cal order by the reconstructed monument of the past; the other to the legitimis- ing of the monument in question as a ‘monument of national history and culture’ by creating its historic and artistic value. -

ANNA MARKOWSKA AROUND 1948: THE “GENTLE REVOLUTION” AND ART HISTORY REVOLUTION: PLAYING A GAME WITH THE AUTHORITIES OR EMBRACING AUTHORITARIANISM FOR THE SAKE OF SAFETY? Is it possible to visualize the Polish revolution which began in the 1940s without referring to socialist realist pictures? After all, that revolution started earlier than the rule of the socialist realism, thus the imagery of the post-thaw (post-1955) period, closely connected with the École de Paris, Picasso, and the informel – a kind of mimicry which was supposed to show that nothing happened1 – can be considered the iconography of the triumphant quasi-com- munist revolution in its local variety. The postwar Polish revolution was in- separably related to modernity which I define, following Walter J. Adamson, as cultural regeneration through searching for new values, and, following An- thony Giddens, as an idea of the world open to changes brought about by hu- man intervention.2 On the one hand, the postwar period was marked by the common effort to initiate reconstruction and regeneration, on the other, the impoverished and traumatized society accepted the model of the authoritari- 1 I am referring here both to Andrzej Leder’s book Prześniona rewolucja, and to Woj- ciech Włodarczyk’s argument.
