DAILY UPDATED CURRENT AFFAIRS –22.08.2018 TO 24.08.2018 NATIONAL President appoints Governors of seven states President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed Governors of seven states including Bihar, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Sikkim, Meghalaya, and Tripura by exercising his authority under Article 156. The appointments will be effective from the dates the incumbents take charge of their respective offices. Satya Pal Malik, former Governor of Bihar, transferred to Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). He succeeds N Vohra, who has been serving this post since 2008. Lal Ji Tandon has been appointed as new Governor of Bihar. Ganga Prasad, former Governor of Meghalaya, has been appointed as the new Governor of Sikkim. Tathagata Roy, former Governor of Tripura, transferred as new Governor of Meghalaya. Kaptan Singh Solanki, former Governor of Haryana, has been appointed as new Governor of Tripura. Satyadev Narayan Arya has been appointed as the new Governor of Haryana. Baby Rani Maurya has been made the new Governor of Uttarakhand. (b) The PM was speaking at an event in Jujwa village in the tribal-dominated regions of Valsad district in South Gujarat after he ushered in ‘e-Gruh Pravesh’ in the houses to women. Over 1.15 lakh residential units have been built at a cost of Rs 1,727 crore under the scheme. (c) Modi also laid the foundation stone of Rs 586 crore Astol group water supply scheme for the benefit of tribal villages tucked away deep into forests of Dharampur and Kaprada talukas (tehsil) in Valsad district.Under the scheme, water would be lifted from the Damanganga dam and supplied to these villages through a pipeline network. AII launches ‘Our Safety, Our Rights’ campaign (a) The Amnesty International India (AII) launched a new campaign ‘Our Safety, Our Rights’ to create awareness among children to help them understand and identify sexual abuse. (b) It seeks to empower children to speak up and report sexual abuse without fear. (c) The AII has collaborated with Bharat Gyan Vigyan Samiti (BGVS), People’s Action for Rural Awakening (PARA), Institute of Social Education (ISE) to engage with children in 400 schools, across four Indian states – Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. (d) The campaign will culminate on 2018 International Day of the Girl Child (Oct 11). HAL becomes first PSU to transact on TReDS Platform (a) State-owned aerospace and defence manufacturer Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) has become the first public sector enterprise to make transaction on RXIL TReDS platform. (b) It executed its first digitised invoice discounting transaction on RXIL TReDS platform by accepting digital invoice uploaded by Nasik-based MSME (micro category) vendor Narendra Udyog. (c) This transaction was financed by Bank of Baroda. (d) Trade Receivables Discounting System (TReDS) is online electronic institutional mechanism for facilitating the financing of trade receivables of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) through multiple financiers. (e) RXIL is India’s first TReDS platform operating since Jan 2017. (f) It promoted by National Stock Exchange (NSE), Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), State Bank of India (SBI), ICICI Bank and Yes Bank. (g) It enables MSMEs to gain control of their receivables with enhanced visibility and timeliness. Govt to set up Cyclone Warning Centre in Kerala The Union Ministry of Earth Sciences announced to set up Cyclone Warning Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It has also proposed to set up C-band Doppler weather radar at Mangalore, Karnataka. At present, IMD has six cyclone warning centres, four along east coast at Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Bhubaneswar (Odisha) and Kolkata (West Bengal), and two along west coast at Ahmedabad (Gujarat) and Mumbai (Maharashtra). 35% of cyber-attacks on Indian sites from China (a) According to recent report by Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), maximum number of cyber-attacks on official Indian websites are from China, US and Russia. (b) It had analysed cyber-attacks from Apr-Jun 2018. (c) Cyber-attacks originating from China account for largest 35% of total number of cyber-attacks on official Indian websites followed by US (17%), Russia (15%), Pakistan (9%), Canada (7%) and Germany (5%). International Buddhist Conclave 2018 held in New Delhi (a) The International Buddhist Conclave (IBC), 2018 has been inaugurated by President Ram Nath Kovind in New Delhi with the theme “Buddha Path – The Living Heritage”. (b) This was the sixth edition of International Buddhist Conclave.It was organized by Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with State Governments of Maharashtra, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Japan is the Partner Country for IBC-2018. ICOMOS launches Kerala Heritage Rescue Initiative The global monument conservation body, International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) has launched Kerala Heritage Rescue Initiative to assess damage to rich cultural and built heritage sites in flood- devastated Kerala.It aims at setting up platform for emergency response to cultural heritage damaged by the floods in Kerala. ICOMOS is headquartered in Paris, France. Kempegowda International second fastest growing airport in world The Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has emerged as the second fastest growing airport in the world in the first half of 2018 in terms of actual growth in number of passengers. Only Haneda International has bettered KIA’s growth. New Delhi’s airport is placed 6th while Hyderabad is placed 17th in terms of actual growth of passengers. INTERNATIONAL Iran unveils first domestically manufactured fighter jet Iran unveiled first domestically manufactured fighter jet nicknamed Kowsar. It was unveiled at defence show held in the capital city of Tehran. It is fourth-generation fighter with advanced avionics and multi-purpose radar. It was 100% indigenously made in Iran. The name Kowsar means river in paradise in Islam and also title of chapter in Koran. Lawmaker plans highest US civilian award for Gandhi An influential American lawmaker has said she would introduce a historic legislation to posthumously award Mahatma Gandhi a Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award in the US, for inspiring peaceful movements for civil rights around the world. Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney from New York made the announcement at the 38th India Day Parade, the annual extravaganza celebrating India’s Independence Day. ECONOMY RIL first Indian firm to hit Rs 8 trillion market cap (a) Reliance Industries (RIL) became the first Indian company to cross Rs 8 trillion in market capitalisation. The stock gained 1.9 per cent to close at Rs 1,270, valuing the Mukesh Ambani-led firm at Rs 8.05 trillion ($115 billion at current exchange rate of Rs 70.11 for a dollar). (b) Tata group flagship Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) also is nearing the same milestone. Currently, the technology giant is valued at Rs 7.8 trillion ($111 billion), 2.6 per cent away from the Rs 8-trillion mark. Flipkart launches platform for refurbished products (a) Online retailer Flipkart has launched an independent platform for refurbished products, starting with a mobile site. Called ‘2GUD’, the platform initially offers smartphones, laptops, tablets and electronic accessories, with large appliances to be added soon. (b) Flipkart recently announced that it has acquired AI-led speech recognition Liv.ai, in a bid to target the next 200 million online shoppers. Flipkart’s CEO – Kalyan Krishnamurth BILATERAL NSIC inks pact with Malaysia’s SME Corp National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) signed an MoU with SME Corporation Malaysia for exchange of information and cooperation in areas such as policies to aid development of small and medium businesses (SMBs) in the two countries. Japan to be ‘Country Partner’ for Make in Odisha 2018 The Odisha Government has tied up with Japan for its mega investment Conclave 2018 to take place in November this year. The state has already identified 600 acres near capital city Bhubaneswar that could serve as a dedicated industrial park for Japanese investors. While Japan will be ‘Country Partner’ to the Make in Odisha conclave, SBI is banking partner for the event.
