  • 2021 Global Investor Statement to Governments on the Climate Crisis
2021 Global Investor Statement to Governments on the Climate Crisis This statement, coordinated by the seven Founding Partners of The Investor Agenda, is signed by 587 investors representing over USD $46 trillion in assets We stand at the beginning of a pivotal decade in which institutional investors and government leaders worldwide have the power to raise ambition and accelerate action to tackle the climate crisis. If we do not meet this challenge and change course immediately, the world could heat in excess of 3-degrees Celsius this century1 – far beyond the goal of the Paris Agreement to limit the global average temperature rise to no more than 1.5-degrees Celsius, which scientists say is necessary to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To achieve this common goal, we must work together to reduce global net carbon dioxide emissions by 45 percent from 2010 levels by 20302, with a dramatic reduction of all greenhouse gas emissions essential for reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 or sooner. Key to this is ensuring government leaders support sustainable COVID-19 economic recovery efforts consistent with net-zero emissions. As the world prepares to gather for the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), we encourage all countries to significantly strengthen their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for 2030 and to ensure a planned transition to net-zero emissions by 2050 or sooner. While we recognize the differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities of countries, we believe that those who set ambitious targets in line with achieving net-zero emissions, and implement consistent national climate policies in the short-to-medium term, will become increasingly attractive investment destinations.

Investor Statement Calling on Companies to Improve Performance on the Corporate Human Rights Benchmark Dear Board of Directors, The undersigned 176 investors representing over US$4.5 trillion in assets under management are writing to express our concern regarding the company’s1 ranking in the 2019 Corporate Human Rights Benchmark (CHRB).2 The Investor Alliance for Human Rights is a collective action platform for responsible investment. Its members include asset management firms, public pension funds, trade union funds, faith-based institutions, family funds, and endowments. Collectively, they represent nearly US$4 trillion in assets under management in 18 countries. As investors,3 we expect companies to demonstrate their respect for human rights across their operations and value chains, including through (1) the disclosure of strong public commitments on human rights, (2) explanations of rigorous human rights due diligence processes, and (3) transparent mechanisms that enable remediation of negative impacts. We believe these actions can ameliorate risks to business, including operational delays, reputational harm, financial loss, and legal liabilities.4 Human rights due diligence is a key element in corporate respect for human rights, as detailed in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) and the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Business Conduct. In addition to the CHRB, numerous publicly available resources provide guidance to help companies fulfill the due diligence expectations laid out by these frameworks.5 Yet, based on the latest CHRB ranking, which assessed 200 companies in high-risk sectors against five human rights due diligence indicators, your company has scored zero on all five indicators.

  • Investor Statement on Deforestation and Forest Fires in the Amazon This Statement Is Endorsed by 230 Investors Representing Approximately US $16.2 Trillion in Assets
Investor statement on deforestation and forest fires in the Amazon This statement is endorsed by 230 investors representing approximately US $16.2 trillion in assets. It is with deep concern that we follow the escalating crisis of deforestation and forest fires in Brazil and Bolivia. As investors, who have a fiduciary duty to act in the best long-term interests of our beneficiaries, we recognise the crucial role that tropical forests play in tackling climate change, protecting biodiversity and ensuring ecosystem services. The recent reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Service (IPBES) highlight the close links between unsustainable land use and climate change. With CO2 emissions rising and biodiversity declining faster than any time in human history1, these reports highlight the urgency in promoting sustainable land management to halt biodiversity loss, enhance food security and meet the goals of the Paris Agreement2. The Amazon, as the world’s largest rainforest, is a global repository of biological diversity, and provides invaluable ecosystem services which underpin economic activities across the globe. As the largest tract of continuous rainforest in the planet, the Amazon plays a critical role in the Earth’s climate system. Deforestation in the region could potentially bring the entire ecosystem dangerously near to a tipping point, after which the rainforest will not be able to maintain itself, gradually turning into a more Savannah-like system which is much dryer, less biodiverse, and stores significantly less carbon. This would severely disrupt the agricultural sector and other economic activities, by reducing rainfall and increasing temperatures in the longer-term.
