It could be inferred that illiteracy perpetuated a slave’s ignorance and compliance while literacy inspired critical thinking and self-empowerment. For instance, alluding to his reading of the “Columbia Orator”, Douglass demonstrates how he was able to see the evil of slavery and how this realization instilled a profound sense of discontentment. Knowledge and Power: If the trajectory of Frederick Douglass’s life refers to a movement from oppression to liberty then it certainly involve a journey from ignorance to knowledge. Douglass’s freedom is amenable to the urge of knowing. With an innate ‘Humanist’ zeal Douglas is keen to know the ideas of the world; language, history, space, culture and so on and at the same time is eager to trace his identity. The issue of identity may be elaborated with reference to the following points: a) Confusion regarding his parental identity b) The rumour has it that his master is his father c) Vague memory of mother (Students may work upon the metaphor of the darkness of night as his mother was allowed to meet him only at night) d) Less attachment to his siblings who worked in the same plantation Such an absence of proper familial identity exasperated Douglass’s desire to establish an identity on his own which, he realized even at an early age, can be developed only with knowledge and learning. Douglass’ journey towards freedom is coterminous with knowledge the begins with a programme for literacy that he chose for himself, continued with, despite hurdles of several sorts coming along all the way and where he involves other fellow slaves. -

To describe what is known about the national prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) against 21 women in the Americas across countries and over time, including the geographic coverage, quality, and com- 22 parability of national data. 23 Methods. This was a systematic review and reanalysis of national, population-based IPV estimates from 24 1998 – 2017 in the Americas. Estimates were reanalyzed for comparability or extracted from reports, including IPV prevalence by type (physical; sexual; physical and/or sexual), timeframe (ever; past year), and perpetrator 25 (any partner in life; current/most recent partner). In countries with 3+ rounds of data, Cochran-Armitage and 26 Pearson chi-square tests were used to assess whether changes over time were significant (P < 0.05). 27 Results. Eligible surveys were found in 24 countries. Women reported ever having experienced physical and/ 28 or sexual IPV at rates that ranged from 14% – 17% of women in Brazil, Panama, and Uruguay to over one-half 29 (58.5%) in Bolivia. -

Unit Title: Reflections on the Slave Trade and Impact on Latin American Culture Author: Colleen Devine Atlanta Charter Middle School 6th grade Humanities 2-week unit Unit Summary: In this mini-unit, students will research and teach each other about European conquest and colonization in Latin America. They will learn about and reflect on the trans- Atlantic slave trade. They will analyze primary source documents from the slave trade by conducting research using the online Slave Voyages Database, reading slave narratives and viewing primary source paintings and photographs. They will reflect on the influence of African culture in Latin America as a result of the slave trade. Finally, they will write a slave perspective narrative, applying their knowledge of all of the above. Established Goals: Georgia Performance Standards: GA SS6H1: The student will describe the impact of European contact on Latin America. a. Describe the encounter and consequences of the conflict between the Spanish and the Aztecs and Incas and the roles of Cortes, Montezuma, Pizarro, and Atahualpa. b. Explain the impact of the Columbian Exchange on Latin America and Europe in terms of the decline of the indigenous population, agricultural change, and the introduction of the horse. (Wilson 2008: ix) What does it mean when the tools of a racist patriarchy are used to examine the fruits of that same patriarchy?It means that only the most narrow parameters of change are possible and allowable. […] For the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house. (Lorde 2007:112) 2.1 A Contested Genre Among the most-often repeated mantras of postmodernism are most likely the ones about the death of the author and the fragmentation of the subject. While the first is seen as antithetical to identity politics, the latter in particular poses a serious threat to a novelistic genre like the Bildungsroman, which concerned itself originally with coherent subject and stable identity formation. Indeed, postmodernism, as Daniel Lea puts it, “constitutes a serious ideological blow to the relevance of the bildungsroman” (2005: 20). As a consequence, by the 1980s, the Bildungsroman is pronounced dead by some of its critics (cf. Miles 1974; Moretti 2000), while others argue it has only ceased to be a form valid for trac- ing the development and self-actualization of certain privileged or bourgeois social subjects, meaning white, male, educated, mostly middle-class individuals; at the same time, for the depiction of female development it “still offers a vital 41 Coming of Age in the Caribbean and Diaspora form” (Abel/Hirsch/Langland 1983: 13). -

Bauman: Underestimating Women in the Early Modern Atlantic World Underestimating Women in the Early Modern Atlantic World Lindsey Bauman This essay examines the limiting gender roles of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as depicted through the detailed account of Catalina de Erauso, a Spanish woman who ran away from a convent. Disguising herself as a man, our character eventually journeyed to Chile, joined the militia, and took part in fighting against the native peoples of the region. Noted as being an exemplary warrior in the midst of battle, she was not detected as a woman until she exposed herself. By taking historical context into account, this essay argues that patriarchal society’s view of women is what enabled Catalina de Erauso to impersonate a man so successfully. As women were stereotyped as characteristically similar and, therefore, interchangeable, they were underestimated and overlooked in these roles. -

By extending Trudier Harris’ research on representations of the “strong” black woman backwards into the nineteenth century, this thesis argues that the earliest literary depiction of such figures is the “extraordinary black slave woman,” an image present in many nineteenth- century slave narratives. In particular, I argue that in the narratives of Harriet Jacobs, Mary Prince, Frederick Douglass, Sylvia Dubois, Zilpha Elaw and Jarena Lee, the extraordinary slave women are depicted as domestic workers, manual laborers, physical resisters, mothers, and spiritual sisters. ii The thesis of Kimber Thomas is approved. Women in power Women Women in power: challenges for the 21st century GENERAL MANUELA SAENZ (1797-1856) is the controversial GROUP OF WOMEN PARLIAMENTARIANS OF THE AMERICAS FIPA and challenging Ecuadorian patriot whose picture illustrates the cover of these memoirs. Her relationship to Simón Bolívar Quito, 11-12 August 2010 and her many services to the fights for Independence in Ecuador, Colombia and Peru won her recognition as “the liberator of the Liberator”. One of the often forgotten causes to which she devoted her efforts is the rights of women, and she is also renowned for her firm, feminist stance. She died in exile, and almost complete neglected in Paita, Peru, during a diphtheria outbreak. She was buried in a common grave, but her campaign in Pichincha and Ayacucho has not been forgotten. The current Ecuadorian President declared her century st “Honorable General” on 22 May 2007, thus acknowledging a 1 military rank already awarded to her in history books. Women and Global Leadership Report of the Women’s Leadership Conference of the Americas April 2004 Women and Global Leadership Report of the Women’s Leadership Conference of the Americas April 2004 Foreword he numbers of women occupying senior leadership positions in foreign and economic policy making Tin the Western Hemisphere have dramatically increased in the past two decades. In increasing numbers, women occupy top posts in international organizations and in foreign, fi nance, trade, and defense ministries in national governments. These impressive gains, however, have been uneven across countries and institu- tions—and still lag behind women’s educational achievement and their participation in the workforce. As with politics in general, the highest circles of power still remain largely male-dominated. Women are often held back by pervasive, subtle, and sometimes unacknowledged attitudes about their proper place and role in society. Nonetheless, women’s numbers and infl uence are growing. These are the major conclusions of a report commissioned by the Women’s Leadership Conference of the Americas (WLCA)—a joint initiative of the Inter-American Dialogue and the International Center for Research on Women. The report concludes with measures that leaders can implement to foster continued progress. Inter- national organizations and national governments should systematize and maintain gender-disaggregated statistics, and make them accessible to the public; they should be held accountable for setting goals and implementing policies and practices that promote gender equity at the highest levels; they should analyze the reasons for gender inequity at the upper levels, and come up with timetables and plans to remedy the situation; and international organizations and national governments should create infrastructures to provide families with adequate childcare options. -

Writing the Wrongs: A Comparison of Two Female Slave Narratives Thesis submitted to The Graduate College of Marshall University In partial fulfillment of The requirements for the degree of Master of Arts In History By Miya Hunter-Willis Dr. Robert Sawrey, Ph.D., Committee Chairperson Dr. Daniel Holbrook, Ph.D. Dr. Jerome Handler, Ph.D. Marshall University October 2008 ABSTRACT This thesis compares slave narratives written by Mattie J. Jackson and Kate Drumgoold. Both narrators recalled incidents that showed how slavery and the environment during the Reconstruction period created physical and psychological obstacles for women. Each narrator challenged the Cult of True Womanhood by showing that despite the stereotypes created to keep them subordinate there were African American women who successfully used their knowledge of white society to circumvent a system that tried to keep their race enslaved. Despite the 30 years that separate the publication of these two narratives, the legacy of education attainment emerges as a key part of survival and binds the narrators together under a common goal.
