Merging together dub, ska, reggae and electronic influences, it didn’t take long for the infectious sounds of GDC to become widespread, with their debut EP ‘Members Only’ taking the number one spot on the iTunes Reggae charts. K.O.G & THE ZONGO BRIGADE U.K & AFRICA Roots Stage, Saturday 21.05 Under the leadership of Kweku Sackey a.k.a Ghanaian force of nature K.O.G, the 8-piece Zongo brigade deliver infectious, high- energy West African grooves, drawing on afro-beat, soul, funk, rock and reggae to create a totally original sound that leaves every crowd dripping with sweat and begging for more. Drawing on the rich cultural heritage of both the Levantine and Balkan regions, they create original music for the 21st century, inspired by ancient melodies. WILD MARMALADE AUSTRALIA Roots Stage, Friday 21.30 Australian band Wild Marmalade are the pioneers of the didgeridoo and drum sound that is now a global phenomena. From their humble origins as street entertainers in the late 90’s they have taken their unique brand of didgeridoo and drum dance music to stages, clubs and festivals the world over. LAKUTA EUROPE & AFRICA Roots Stage, Saturday 22.30 With members hailing from Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Malaysia and mainland Europe, Lakuta is a truly global mix of musicians who draw on a deep love of jazz, funk, afrobeat and tropical music to create a fierce, driving sound. CUSHION MALTA Roots Stage, Friday 19.30 Cushion, an Indian Fusion band based in Malta, offers a very interesting and mesmerizing mid tempo fusion of western and eastern music, mostly inclined towards the sound of India, with dominant sitar licks, eastern inclinations on vocal threads, backed with sublime ambience from the keys, and interesting drum and bass patterns to wrap it all up. REGIS U.K. Electronic Sphere, Saturday 21.00 Karl O’Connor is most certainly Regis and it’s also highly probable that he propagates other pseudonyms. This has only added to the greater mythology surrounding the influential Downwards label that he has run with fellow art terrorist Peter Sutton (Female) since 1993. BRIKKUNI MALTA Roots Stage, Thursday 21.30 Often credited with the revival of Maltese sung pop music, Brikkuni have been around since their seminal 2008 debut ‘Kuntrabanda’ – an album which took the local music scene by surprise and transformed the band into a cult phenomenon. LUKE VIBERT U.K. Electronic Sphere, Friday 20.30 Luke Vibert is a British recording artist and producer known for his work in many subgenres of electronic music. The work of Rangers would be made safer if both exporting and importing countries would crack down on this odious trade. Unfortunately, it is not only illegal trade that places pressure on the environment: climate change, land clearing and habitat fragmentation, invasive species, overharvesting and pollution all play a role. For these reasons, Rangers need to be multi-skilled and adaptable. Their crucial role in protecting natural and cultural heritage is under-recognised and deserving of greater support. Despite this grim picture, there is plenty of cause for optimism.

  • MEDIA RELEASE Musicians and Fans Love Airlie Beach
MEDIA RELEASE For immediate release November 14, 2018 Musicians and fans love Airlie Beach “I don’t think you have to twist anyone’s arm to come to Airlie Beach, especially when they say ‘we’re going to pay you for it’, but I’d probably come here for free.” This was what Kasey Chambers had to say about the 2018 Airlie Beach Festival of Music and she wasn’t alone. Ash Grunwald described the weekend’s sixth annual event as “super fun” and Killing Heidi’s Ella Hooper said while it had been a long time between Whitsunday gigs the crowd hadn’t lost any of their spark. “The second we got on stage I felt the crowd’s energy and I thought ‘thank you Airlie Beach’,” she said. “We genuinely had an awesome time and we will come back any time you want us.” Melbourne Ska Orchestra front man Nicky Bomba, who coincidentally played drums on Killing Heidi’s hit song ‘Weir’, said aside from catching up with his musical family in a tropical paradise the highlights of this year’s festival were down to its organiser Gavin Butlin. “Big up to him because he makes the whole thing happen,” he said. “It’s a bit of an honour to play here.” Mr Butlin said 2018 had been the best festival yet. “The audiences have been great and so have the bands,” he said. “The Melbourne Ska Orchestra just lifted the roof off the tent and Killing Heidi – I’ve never seem them live before and Ella Hooper was amazing.” New for 2018 was the inaugural main stage under 18’s event ‘Kasey and the Kids’, which Mr Butlin declared a resounding success.

Artistic Director David De Santi said the lineup was particularly strong, with top international, national and local acts and one of the largest contingents of young performers in the event’s history. “This will be Eric Bogle’s fifth appearance in our 35 years, and he always attracts large audiences,” Mr De Santi said. “It’s great to have him back.” The Scottish-born singer-songwriter, whose anti-war song And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda is an international classic, first played at the festival in 1988, and returned in 2012, 2014 and 2018. Shellie Morris is a multi-award-winning singer-songwriter who sings in 17 Australian Indigenous languages. She is a member of the Black Arm Band and was part of the internationally acclaimed Prison Songs documentary. “Shellie is a captivating artist and we are delighted that she is coming to Bulli in January,” Mr De Santi said. “We are also thrilled to have the Toe Sucking Cowgirls include us in their 20th anniversary reunion tour,” Mr De Santi said.
