Yang posted the best record this week off the four major championship winners of 2009. Y.E. Yang – PGA Championship 2-2-1 Stewart Cink – British Open 1-3-1 Angel Cabrera – Masters 1-3-0 Lucas Glover – U.S. Open 0-3-1 Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Steve Stricker, the top-3 finishers in the FedExCup combined to go 13-1-1 in this year’s Presidents Cup. -atch 23 Hunter Mahan (U.S.) defeated Camilo Villegas (International), 2&1 In his second Presidents Cup appearance, Hunter Mahan notched his first singles victory in either the Ryder Cup (2008) or The Presidents Cup (2007, 2009) with a 2&1 victory over Presidents Cup rookie Camilo Villegas. Mahan was actually 2 down after two holes, thanks to bogeys on No. 1 and No. 2. But he rallied with birdies on No. 5, 8 and 13 to climb to 1 up. A bogey by Villegas on No. 17 ended the match. Villegas finished with a 0-4-0 record, becoming the fourth “rookie” to go without a win and the first to lose four matches in The Presidents Cup (Mark Brooks went 0-3-0 in 1996; Carlos Franco went 0-2-1 in 1998; Rory Sabbatini went 0-3-1 in 2007). Match 24 Stewart Cink (U.S.) defeated Adam Scott (International), 4&3 Stewart Cink waited until the final day to record his first point at this year’s Presidents Cup, posting a decisive 4&3 victory over Australia’s Adam Scott. Cink’s win moves him to 3-1-0 in Singles competition at The Presidents Cup. Scott, who started strong with a 2&1 win with Ernie Els in the Day One Foursomes, failed to record another point over the next three days of competition. Match 25 Weir (International) halved with Leonard (U.S.) Justin Leonard birdied the 18th hole to move to all square in his match against Mike Weir. The two were prepared to move to a sudden-death playoff, starting on No. 9, but Tiger Woods meanwhile holed the putt that secured The Presidents Cup for the U.S. Team. Therefore, the Weir/Leonard match was declared a halve. For Leonard it was the first time he hasn’t lost his Sunday Singles match at The Presidents Cup since his first appearance in 2005 when he defeated Tim Clark, 4&3. Leonard’s Singles record is now 1-3-1 and Weir moves to 3-1-1. Match 26 Anthony Kim (U.S.) defeated Robert Allenby (International), 5&3 Anthony Kim posted a strong record in his first Presidents Cup appearance at 3-1-0. His 5&3 defeat of Robert Allenby – a five-time Presidents Cup veteran – came more on the basis of Allenby’s four bogeys than anything. The Aussie struggled with his driver today, as he has all week, hitting only 3 of 10 fairways. For Kim’s part, he had his best driving day of the week, hitting 6 of 10 fairways. He was 19 of 50 for the week. Match 27 Geoff Ogilvy (International) defeated Steve Stricker (U.S.), 2&1 Geoff Ogilvy, a two-time Accenture Match Play Championship winner (2006, 2009), was strong again in Sunday Singles, posting a 2&1 record over until-then unbeaten Steve Stricker. Ogilvy has faced Stricker before – he defeated him 4&3 during Round 1 of the 2007 Accenture Match Play Championship and defeated him 1 up in the Sunday Singles of the 2007 Presidents Cup. Stricker finishes with a 4-1-0 record, his best performance at The Presidents Cup (1996, 2007) or Ryder Cup (2008). -atch 28 Sean O’Hair (U.S.) defeated Ernie Els (International), 6&4 After losing his first two matches of the week in his first Presidents Cup appearance, Sean O’Hair scored 2-1/2 points in the final two days to post a 2-2-1 record. He birdied the first two holes on Sunday and never looked back, never losing a hole to Els, who was handed his worst defeat in Sunday Singles. He lost to Tiger Woods in 2003, 4&3. Match 29 Ryo Ishikawa (International) defeated Kenny Perry (U.S.), 2&1 With approximately 80 Japanese journalists and photographers following his every move this week, 18-year-old Ryo Ishikawa held his own in his first Presidents Cup appearance, going 3-2-0. As the youngest competitor in Presidents Cup history, Ishikawa faced the fourth-oldest competitor in Presidents Cup history in 49-year-old Kenny Perry. At 3-2-0, Ishikawa posted the best performance by a rookie on the International Team since Adam Scott went 3- 2-0 in 2003. The loss gave Perry a 1-3-0 record, matching his worst performance in The Presidents Cup (1-3-0, 2005). Perry had won his two previous Singles matches (2005, defeated Mark Hensby; 2003, defeated Nick Price). Match 30 Tim Clark (International) defeated Zach Johnson (U.S.), 4&3 In a match that featured 13 birdies – Tim Clark (8) and Johnson (5) – Clark earned his first victory in Sunday Singles with a 4&3 win over Johnson. Clark finishes with a 2-2-1 record in this year’s Presidents Cup; he has scored at least two points in all three career appearances in the competition (2-3-0 in 2003; 2-2-1 in 2005).
