Yang/Ryo Ishikawa (International) defeated Kenny Perry/Zach Johnson (U.S.), 3&2 CUMMULATIVE RESULTS United States 10, International 7 Three players have a perfect 3-0-0 record after the Day Three morning foursomes: Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods for the U.S. Team. Match 13 Mickelson/O’Hair (U.S.) defeated Goosen/Villegas (International), 5&3 Veteran Phil Mickelson helped Presidents Cup rookie Sean O’Hair to his first win this week with a 5&3 victory over Retief Goosen and Camilo Villegas, another rookie. Mickelson is now 3-0-0 this week, his best start at The Presidents Cup in eight appearances; he has had three different partners thus far but will team up with Sean O’Hair again this afternoon for the four-ball matches. Mickelson/O’Hair recorded four birdies and no bogeys in 14 holes today. Mickelson’s approach to the No. 5 green landed 2 feet from the green and O’Hair tapped in for birdie; O’Hair made a 26’8” birdie putt on No. 9 and a 23’10” birdie putt on No. 12; Mickelson holed an 11’8” birdie putt on No. 13. The match ended on No. 15 with a conceded 14’4” birdie putt. Match 14 Leonard/Furyk (U.S.) defeated Els/Scott (International), 4&2 Justin Leonard/Jim Furyk teamed up for the second time this week and the fourth all-time at The Presidents Cup (all in foursomes), improving their record to 2-1-1 with a 4&2 win over Ernie Els/Adam Scott. The U.S. Team handed Els his first loss this week. Els/Scott, who won their foursomes match on Thursday over Hunter Mahan/Sean O’Hair, are now 3-2-0 as a pair at The Presidents Cup (all in foursomes). Match 15 Allenby/Singh (International) halved with Cink/Mahan (U.S.) Vijay Singh/Robert Allenby followed up a win in Day One foursomes by scoring a half-point today against Stewart Cink/Hunter Mahan. The halve means no player on the International Team has the chance to go undefeated this week, as Ernie Els posted a loss for the first time earlier today. Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson are the only two players who have competed in every Presidents Cup, but Singh owns the record for most matches played at 38 (including today; Mickelson has participated in 36 matches). Match 16 Woods/Stricker (U.S.) defeated Weir/Clark (International), 1 up Despite never playing together in a Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup, Tiger Woods/Steve Stricker are undefeated after four matches. They lost four holes today to Mike Weir/Tim Clark – after losing only one hole in the first two matches – but rallied for a 1 up victory. The turning point in the match, which at one point had the International Team 2 up with six holes to play, came on the par-4 17th. Woods rolled in a 22’10” putt for birdie, putting pressure on Mike Weir, who missed his 3’11” birdie. With the match all square on 18, Woods went for the green in two and his 232-yard approach stopped 8’11” from the hole. When the International Team missed the green and the subsequent birdie putt, the U.S. Team’s eagle putt was conceded. Woods is off to his best start in six appearances in The Presidents Cup. One more win would give Woods his best performance at The Presidents Cup, as he has never won four matches in a single event. His best record is 3-2-0 (2007, 2003, 2000). The same is true for Stricker, whose best record in two previous appearances at The Presidents Cup is 3-2-0 in 2007. Match 17 Yang/Ishikawa (International) defeated Perry/Johnson (U.S.), 3&2 After winning together in the Day Two foursomes, Ryo Ishikawa/Y.E. Yang paired up again this morning for another win, 3&2 over Kenny Perry/Zach Johnson. It was Johnson’s first loss of the week and his first loss in The Presidents Cup foursomes (2007, 2009). They’ve been paired again for the afternoon four-ball, which is only the third time in The Presidents Cup history that rookies have played together three times. In the two previous instances, the rookies posted an undefeated 3- 0-0 record together: 1996, Mark O’Meara/David Duval; and 2000, Stewart Cink/Kirk Triplett. The rookies will have their work cut out for them, as they face Tiger Woods/Steve Stricker, who are 3-0-0 this week as a team.
