Yang/Ryo Ishikawa (International) defeated Kenny Perry/Zach Johnson (U.S.), 3&2 CUMMULATIVE RESULTS United States 10, International 7 Three players have a perfect 3-0-0 record after the Day Three morning foursomes: Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods for the U.S. Team. Match 13 Mickelson/O’Hair (U.S.) defeated Goosen/Villegas (International), 5&3 Veteran Phil Mickelson helped Presidents Cup rookie Sean O’Hair to his first win this week with a 5&3 victory over Retief Goosen and Camilo Villegas, another rookie. Mickelson is now 3-0-0 this week, his best start at The Presidents Cup in eight appearances; he has had three different partners thus far but will team up with Sean O’Hair again this afternoon for the four-ball matches. Mickelson/O’Hair recorded four birdies and no bogeys in 14 holes today. Mickelson’s approach to the No. 5 green landed 2 feet from the green and O’Hair tapped in for birdie; O’Hair made a 26’8” birdie putt on No. 9 and a 23’10” birdie putt on No. 12; Mickelson holed an 11’8” birdie putt on No. 13. The match ended on No. 15 with a conceded 14’4” birdie putt. Match 14 Leonard/Furyk (U.S.) defeated Els/Scott (International), 4&2 Justin Leonard/Jim Furyk teamed up for the second time this week and the fourth all-time at The Presidents Cup (all in foursomes), improving their record to 2-1-1 with a 4&2 win over Ernie Els/Adam Scott. The U.S. Team handed Els his first loss this week. Els/Scott, who won their foursomes match on Thursday over Hunter Mahan/Sean O’Hair, are now 3-2-0 as a pair at The Presidents Cup (all in foursomes). Match 15 Allenby/Singh (International) halved with Cink/Mahan (U.S.) Vijay Singh/Robert Allenby followed up a win in Day One foursomes by scoring a half-point today against Stewart Cink/Hunter Mahan. The halve means no player on the International Team has the chance to go undefeated this week, as Ernie Els posted a loss for the first time earlier today. Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson are the only two players who have competed in every Presidents Cup, but Singh owns the record for most matches played at 38 (including today; Mickelson has participated in 36 matches). Match 16 Woods/Stricker (U.S.) defeated Weir/Clark (International), 1 up Despite never playing together in a Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup, Tiger Woods/Steve Stricker are undefeated after four matches. They lost four holes today to Mike Weir/Tim Clark – after losing only one hole in the first two matches – but rallied for a 1 up victory. The turning point in the match, which at one point had the International Team 2 up with six holes to play, came on the par-4 17th. Woods rolled in a 22’10” putt for birdie, putting pressure on Mike Weir, who missed his 3’11” birdie. With the match all square on 18, Woods went for the green in two and his 232-yard approach stopped 8’11” from the hole. When the International Team missed the green and the subsequent birdie putt, the U.S. Team’s eagle putt was conceded. Woods is off to his best start in six appearances in The Presidents Cup. One more win would give Woods his best performance at The Presidents Cup, as he has never won four matches in a single event. His best record is 3-2-0 (2007, 2003, 2000). The same is true for Stricker, whose best record in two previous appearances at The Presidents Cup is 3-2-0 in 2007. Match 17 Yang/Ishikawa (International) defeated Perry/Johnson (U.S.), 3&2 After winning together in the Day Two foursomes, Ryo Ishikawa/Y.E. Yang paired up again this morning for another win, 3&2 over Kenny Perry/Zach Johnson. It was Johnson’s first loss of the week and his first loss in The Presidents Cup foursomes (2007, 2009). They’ve been paired again for the afternoon four-ball, which is only the third time in The Presidents Cup history that rookies have played together three times. In the two previous instances, the rookies posted an undefeated 3- 0-0 record together: 1996, Mark O’Meara/David Duval; and 2000, Stewart Cink/Kirk Triplett. The rookies will have their work cut out for them, as they face Tiger Woods/Steve Stricker, who are 3-0-0 this week as a team. • Tax Sand Traps for Ernie Els and Other Pro Athletes South Africa’S Ernie Els Won the 141St British Open and Should Be Relishing His Success, Not Worrying About Taxes
Robert W. Wood THE TAX LAWYER Jul. 24 2012 — 12:00 am Tax Sand Traps For Ernie Els And Other Pro Athletes South Africa’s Ernie Els won the 141st British Open and should be relishing his success, not worrying about taxes. Even less successful professional golfers may not engender much sympathy. The money seems incredible, the work seems better than Ernie Els of South Africa holds the Claret Jug, 'The what most of us do for a Golf Champion Trophy' after winning the 2012 British Open Golf Championship at Royal Lytham and St living, and the adoring fans Annes in Lytham, north-west England, on July 22, 2012. Els won the championship with a score of 273, and media seem generally one shot clear of Adam Scott of Australia. (Image supportive. And think of that credit: AFP/Getty Images via @daylife) endorsement income! Still, if you’ve ever waged a tax battle—or even had difficulty trying to figure out something that is supposedly simple—you might feel differently. Imagine not just dealing with the IRS or your own home country’s tax rules. Suppose you earn income in various countries and must apportion it and pay tax in many different places? Welcome to the world of the professional athlete. For the British Open, it isn’t only winnings that are at stake. It is also endorsement income. The UK’s tax collector, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, does a shipshape job of revenue collection and administration, some say better than the IRS. In fact, even those who did not make The Open cut and didn’t earn money from the tournament must pay taxes on endorsements.

  • Is Tiger Woods a Winner? Scott M
Is Tiger Woods a Winner? Scott M. Berry Abstract Tiger Woods has an amazing record of winning golf tournaments. He has gained the persona of a player that is a winner, a player that when near the lead or in the lead can do whatever it takes to win. In this paper I investigate whether in fact, he is a winner. A mathematical model is created for the ability of Tiger Woods, and all PGA Tour golfers to play 18 holes of tournament golf. The career of Tiger Woods is replayed using the mathematical model for all golfers and the results are very consistent with Tiger Woods’ actual career. Therefore the mathematical model, which does not give Woods any additional ability to win, would result in essentially the same career. Woods has not needed any additional ability to win–only his pure golfing ability. The ramifications of this result are that there is no evidence that Woods is in fact a “winner” – but instead he is just a much better golfer than everyone else. Introduction Tiger Woods is one of those rare athletes that accomplish feats in their sport that are freakish. In this small group are guys such as Babe Ruth, Wayne Gretzky, Wilt Chamberlain, Barry Bonds, and Jack Nicklaus. Woods dominates a sport where the population of players are all very good–and very tightly bundled in their ability. To win one tournament, beating 100+ of these players is incredibly difficult. To average one tournament victory a year for 10 years is a Hall of Fame type accomplishment.
