Friday 26th May 2017 RUSHEY MEAD ACADEMY Newsletter ISSUE NUMBER 16 Normandy 2017 Forty three Year 9 students have been enjoying French culture in Normandy for fivedays. On the first day we visited the second most visited monument in France: Le Mont Saint-Michel. Even though we had some thunderstorm rains, the team ‘Lightening’ managed to win the treasure hunt around the site. In the afternoon we had a lot of fun visiting a local goat farm. We all tried some tasty goat cheese and some courageous students even tried to act as a vet, a hair-dresser and a farmer. A particular well done to Kyle who milked the goat and was the first one to taste fresh goat milk. Yummy! On the second day we visited the famous ‘Bayeux tapestry’ and students went in team to a local market in order to buy fresh products to prepare their own lunch. Back at le Chateau, they prepared their dishes and presented them to the chef. Again the team ‘Lightening’ was the most impressive and won the competition with their vegetable sandwiches and their dessert made of ‘chouquette’ (French sweet buns) and fresh strawberries and cherries! In the afternoon we visited the Bristish cemetery and the impressive Bayeux cathedral. On the third day we started with some team building games in le chateau. Students enjoyed a blind trail and teachers enjoyed even more giving them tricks on the way. We then went to Arromanches to watch a moving 360 degrees movie about the D-day, and had a pique nique on the beach. Later we went to the Americain cemetery and had a very interesting guided visit of the German Maisy battery. On top of this very busy day we had a disco night in the evening and we saw some great dancers. Well done to Hermione who won the open call dance. On the last day we started our journey back home with a stop in the pretty town of Honfleur! We arrived in Leicester with fantastic memories to cherish, new friends made and for most of us the desire to visit again in the future! ‘Take it further’ provision 0 Year 10 Easter Schools The Year 10 De Montfort University Easter Schools Programme was once again highly successful. The Easter Schools provided our students with the opportunity to experience their subject of interest in higher education setting and push boundaries. Throughout their time at the university, the students participated in challenging and inspirational activities. ‘DMU Easter School was a great opportunity. I got the chance to see the university, meet new people, learn about the legal system and we even got to put on our own mock trial. I would really recommend this to the Year 10s for next year. A huge thanks to the school and university for giving us the chance to apply and sort everything out for us!’ Punya Khurana 10MER ‘I had the opportunity to attend the art and design Easter school where we looked at a range of practical techniques and different aspects of art, including fine art, ceramics, animation and photography. All aspects of the programme were good, especially the animation workshops. I would recommend all future Year 10 students to apply – it was a great experience in a university setting.’ Congratulations to the following students who successfully completed the programme and were commended on their maturity, efforts and enthusiasm. Amar Prajapati, Praneal Mistry, Punit Jivan, Sophiya Sian, Maryam Ameen, Zannatul Maua, Fathi Ahmed, Salmah Shiham Abdulwahid, Nethmini Athukorale, Simrann Kaur, Punya Khurana, Radhika Keshwala Rushey Mead Academy Library Year 9 Booktalking Upon return to school after the Easter holidays, all of our year 9 students received a Booktalking session. These sessions are provided by Creative Learning Services, which consists of professional Librarians from the school library service. This takes place during their English lesson. The Librarians read extracts from various titles, exposing the students to good reading materials which may interest them and encourage them to keep reading. The booktalked titles are then available for them to loan from the Academy Library. World Book Day, Thursday 2nd March. As is our usual practise to celebrate this day, World Book Day vouchers were issued to our students. The voucher was exchangeable for one of the specially published books to mark the day, or £1 off any book or audio book worth £2.99 or more that the student may wish to purchase from local bookshops. Also to celebrate there are photographs on Twitter of our English teachers who dressed up as characters from books. Rushey Readers Book Club At our March book club we enjoyed a Mad Hatters Tea Party, from the book Alice in Wonderland. Three of our year 7 boys led the group, Nihar, Nishant and Prashant. Two of the boys worked really hard in preparing by using our origami books and producing flowers, white rabbits, frogs and peacocks to decorate the table. We started with a quiz produced by Saroop, a year 9 student, based on the book and followed on by our tea party and ended with Nihar giving us a demonstration on how to make an origami rabbit for ourselves. Twenty-four students participated in this event, from various year groups, all enjoying our tea party! The photographs are on the library twitter page. The April book club led by Hardik year 9 with Keyur and Dhaval both year 7, got us demonstrating our curriculum knowledge of R.E. by concentrating on the Christian Holy Book, The Bible. The boys split us into two teams with the instruction of having to tell the story of the Crucifixion by acting out the story. This was really good fun and the winning team was the one that retold the story best. Some budding actors in the group! Looking forward to the next Book Club, this week. I wonder what we might be doing this time. National Share -a-Story Month The share a story month is taking place this month and we have displayed books that we hope, will encourage our students to loan and read with younger or older members of the family. It is a great way to use picture books and easier reading books to help the students build their confidence in reading out loud! Reading Project Starting the 2nd week of January through to the first week of April, I worked with Mr Howson from the English faculty on a reading project that was delivered to one year 7 group and two year 8 groups. The project lasted for one lesson per week for six weeks. It involved students selecting a book laid out on the tables in the library. Then, after reading the blurb, they joined up with other students who had selected the same title to form a group. The project involved using maths, presentation and listening skills, as well as reading, drawing, discussion and co-working. They participated in a Balloon Debate, acting out selected parts of their book and reading excerpts out loud to the rest of the class. This led to taking decisions on whether they wanted to rewrite the ending, research the author, or create a game and then write a review. This worked really well and will hopefully lead to more reading. As always, thank you for taking an interest in your student/s reading. Together we can make a positive difference to our students here! Careers news On Tuesday 9th May we took a small group of Year 11 students to the Apprenticeship Fair at Beaumont Leys School. The students who attended had all expressed an interest in finding out more about apprenticeships. The event commenced with a helpful and informative presentation by Tracy Waterfield representing the Leicester Apprenticeship Hub. At the event there were several stands with training providers and employers and there were live apprenticeships available which the students could and did register to apply for. Some of the companies at the event were Train Together, Heart of England Training, Leicester City Council, Leicester College, Ford & Slater, LEBC, Nylacast, NHS and many others. Thanks to Zishan Hussein, Uwais Ikleriya, Nikhil Mavadiya, Yahye Mohamed, Muhammed Patel, Badal Ramgi, Arjan Singh & Mohammedhanif Surati for being a credit to Rushey Mead and making the most of this opportunity. Year 11 students can search for apprenticeships at gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship. Check SMHW (Show My Homework), Fronter and added to the notice board outside the Careers Library for new Careers and apprenticeships information. Good Luck from the Careers team to Year 11 students and others taking GCSEs between now and the end of June. Year 11s – remember that the Careers team is here to inform, advise and guide you as you leave Rushey Mead. Please come and see us if you need any help.
