“The Music from ‘Peter Gunn’”--Henry Mancini (1958) Added to the National Registry: 2010 Essay by Mark A. Robinson (guest post)* Henry Mancini Henry Mancini (1924-1994) was the celebrated composer of a parade of song standards, particularly remembered for his work in television and film composition. Among his sparkling array of memorable melodies are the music for “The Pink Panther” films, the “Love Theme from ‘Romeo and Juliet’,” and his two Academy Award-winning collaborations with lyricist Johnny Mercer, “Moon River” for the 1961 film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” and the title song for the 1962 feature “Days of Wine and Roses.” Born Enrico Nicola Mancini in the Little Italy neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio, Henry Mancini was raised in West Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. Though his father wished his son to become a teacher, Mancini was inspired by the music of Hollywood, particularly that of the 1935 Cecil B. DeMille film “The Crusades.” This fascination saw him embark on a lifelong journey into composition. His first instrument of choice was the piccolo, but soon he drifted toward the piano, studying under Pittsburgh concert pianist and Stanley Theatre conductor Max Adkins. Upon graduating high school, Mancini matriculated at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, but quickly transferred to the Julliard School of Music, concentrating his studies in piano, orchestration, and composition. When America entered World War II, Mancini enlisted in the United States Army in 1943. Assigned to the 28th Air Force Band, he made many connections in the music industry that would serve him well in the post-war years. -
Billy Preston
Billy Preston Billy Preston was a soul singer and pianist who, in addition to having a successful solo career, collaborated with some of the greatest names in the music industry, including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Little Richard, Ray Charles, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Sam Cooke, Sammy Davis Jr., Sly Stone, Aretha Franklin, the Jackson 5, Quincy Jones, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Often called “the Fifth Beatle,” this former child prodigy left one of the most profound and prolific legacies in music. William Everett Preston was born in Houston, Texas in 1946. He began playing piano at age three, and by ten he had joined the band of gospel great Mahalia Jackson. At age twelve he appeared in the 1958 film St. Louis Blues, portraying blues composer W.C. Handy as a young man. In the 1960s Preston performed with Little Richard and Ray Charles, and became a regular singer and pianist on the ABC television series Shindig. Preston went on to a successful career as a session musician, including lending his talents to the Beatle’s Let It Be album. That collaboration led to his signing to the Beatles’ Apple label, and in 1969 his solo effort, produced by George Harrison, was released. The album That's the Way God Planned It and the single of the same name met with limited success, but in 1972 he released an instrumental funk single, "Outa-Space," that reached #2 in the U.S. and won the Grammy award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Over the next two years, Preston enjoyed more number one hits including "Will It Go Round In Circles" and "Nothing From Nothing." He was the first guest musical artist on the premier episode of the popular TV show Saturday Night Live. -

The Music We Watch Kelsey De Pree Music History II April 5, 2017 Music is universal. It is present from the beginning of history appearing in all cultures, nations, economic classes, and styles. Music in America is heard on radios, in cars, on phones, and in stores. Television commercials feature jingles so viewers can remember the products; radio ads sing phone numbers so that listeners can recall them. In schools, students sing songs to learn subjects like math, history, and English, and also to learn about general knowledge like the days of the week, months of the year, and presidents of the United States. With the amount of music that is available, it is not surprising that music has also made its way into movie theatres and has become one of the primary agents for conveying emotion and plot during a cinematic production. -

The Beatles: Their Music and Their Times Fall 2019 Course no. MUSC 422 Section no. 47220 Units: 4 Time: MW 4 – 5:50 pm Room: THH 202 Course instructor: Bill Biersach Instructor’s office: MUS 316 Instructor’s office hours: MW 9 – 9:45 am, 12 – 1 pm Office phone: (213) 740-7416 Instructor’s email: [email protected] Teaching assistants: Adam Ratner [email protected] Danny Leo [email protected] Introduction and Purpose The purpose of this course is to familiarize the student with the music, lyrics, recordings, personal and public lives, production techniques, career strategy, social ramifications, and technological impact of the musical group known as The Beatles. The goal is to imbue the student with an appreciation for the music itself, a basic understanding of the primitive technology available at the time (both recording and playing back), and a broader comprehension of the social, economic, political, and cultural upheavals that gave rise to the musical trends of the Sixties. Instructional Strategy Each week the professor will present a lecture which will include musical examples, lyrics, and pertinent background information on the four Beatles, their personal and professional dealings, their approach to live performance and studio recording, and the activities of their managerial and production staff. There will also be a section devoted to the viewing of films, pertinent film clips, documentaries, and discussion of the texts led by the teaching assistants. Typically lectures will be on Mondays and the discussions on Wednesdays. Examinations and Grades There will be three examinations: two midterms and a final. Each exam will consist of 50 multiple-choice questions on Scantron answer sheets. -

Biographical Description for The HistoryMakers® Video Oral History with Harold Wheeler PERSON Wheeler, Harold Alternative Names: Harold Wheeler; William Harold Wheeler, Jr. Life Dates: July 14, 1943- Place of Birth: St. Louis, Missouri, USA Residence: Encino, CA Occupations: Music Composer; Music Producer Biographical Note Producer and composer Harold Wheeler was born William Harold Wheeler, Jr. on July 14, 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri to Roxetta McGee and William Harold Wheeler, Sr. At Antioch Baptist Church, where the members included Chuck Berry and Ike and Tina Turner, Wheeler played the piano for Sunday school at age five. Wheeler attended Turner Branch Elementary School and graduated from Sumner High School in 1960. He then attended Howard University, where he earned his B.A. degree in 1964. Wheeler earned his 1960. He then attended Howard University, where he earned his B.A. degree in 1964. Wheeler earned his M.A. degree in music from Manhattan School of Music in 1968. From 1968 to 1971, Wheeler worked as an assistant program director for CBS-FM Radio in New York. In 1971, Wheeler left CBS in order to compose his own music and coach other performers. That same year, composer Burt Bacharach hired Wheeler for his new musical Promises, Promises, making him the youngest conductor on Broadway. Wheeler was soon working with Michael Bennett composing dance music for A Chorus Line, going on to work with Bennett on Dreamgirls, Coco and SCANDAL. In 1971, Wheeler worked as musical director for Melvin Van Peeble’s groundbreaking musical Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death, and for Don’t Play Us Cheap in 1972. -

170312 Sermon – Page 1 of 4 “Ladies and gentlemen, the Beatles!” With those words, spoken 53 years, one month, and three days ago, Ed Sullivan introduced John, Paul, George, and Ringo to a TV audience of 73 million gathered in front their TV sets to see The Beatles’ first live performance in the United States. Sixty percent of the television sets in America were tuned in to witness the birth of Beatlemania as the girls in the audience screamed, and Paul sang, “Close your eyes and I’ll kiss you, tomorrow I’ll miss you…” They played five songs that night, and by the end of the show they owned the hearts of millions of American youth of all ages. Never before had so many viewers tuned in to a live television program; what they saw would change rock and roll – and the world – forever. The energy, the innocence, the enthusiasm, the matching black suits with black ties, the mop-top haircuts, the smiles, the irreverent banter… The Beatles exploded onto the pop-culture scene, and we were ready to follow them wherever and however they went. In a matter of months Beatles fan clubs were formed across the country, and every imaginable knick-knack had the pictures of the band on it. There were Fab Four lunch boxes, dolls, serving trays, trading cards, coloring books, coin holders, shot glasses, mop-top wigs, and even Beatle-branded talcum powder and nylon stockings! To say the Beatles wrote the musical score for the movie that was my formative years would be a huge understatement.
