Article Summary Understanding the inheritance and evolution of complex traits is an important challenge to geneticists and evolutionary biologists alike. A detailed understanding of how genetic variation affects complex traits is important for the treatment of disease, for our attempts to control the evolution of useful or dangerous organisms, and for understanding and predicting evolution over long time scales. To help understand the evolution and development of the Drosophila melanogaster wing, a model complex trait, we undertook a multivariate genome-wide association study using the Drosophila Genome Reference Panel. -

FROM SHAPE OF LIFE The Polyp and the Medusa Life on the Move Take a moment to follow these instructions: Raise your right hand in front of your eyes. Make a fist. Make the peace sign with your first and second fingers. Make a fist again. Open your hand. Read the next paragraph. What you just did was exhibit a trait we associate with all animals, a trait called, quite simply, movement. And not only did you just move your hand, but you moved it after passing the idea of movement through your brain and nerve cells to command the muscles in your hand to obey. To do this, your body needs muscles to move and nerves to transmit and coordinate movement, whether voluntary or involuntary. The bit of business involved in making fists and peace signs is pretty complex behavior, but it pales by comparison with the suites of thought and movement associated with throwing a curve ball, walking, swimming, dancing, breathing, landing an airplane, running down prey, or fleeing a predator. But whether by thought or instinct, you and all animals except sponges have the ability to move and to carry out complex sequences of movement called behavior. In fact, movement is such a basic part of being an animal that we tend to define animalness as having the ability to move and behave. -

A hydra effect occurs when the mean density of a species increases in response to greater mortality. We show that, in a stable multispecies system, a species exhibits a hydra effect only if maintaining that species at its equilibrium density destabilizes the system. The stability of the original system is due to the responses of the hydra-effect species to changes in the other species’ densities. If that dynamical feedback is removed by fixing the density of the hydra-effect species, large changes in the community make-up (including the possibility of species extinction) can occur. This general result has several implications: (1) Hydra effects occur in a much wider variety of species and interaction webs than has previously been described, and may occur for multiple species, even in small webs; (2) conditions for hydra effects caused by predators (or diseases) often differ from those caused by other mortality factors; (3) introducing a specialist or a switching predator of a hydra-effect species often causes large changes in the community, which frequently involve extinction of other species; (4) harvest policies that attempt to maintain a constant density of a hydra-effect species may be difficult to implement, and, if successful, are likely to cause large changes in the densities of other species; and (5) trophic cascades and other indirect effects caused by predators of hydra-effect species can exhibit amplification of effects or unexpected directions of change. -

Biol. 56: 637-652 (2012) doi: 10.1387/ijdb.123523pb www.intjdevbiol.com How to use Hydra as a model system to teach biology in the classroom PATRICIA BOSSERT1 and BRIGITTE GALLIOT*,2 1University of Stony Brook, New York, USA and 2 Department of Genetics and Evolution, University of Geneva, Switzerland ABSTRACT As scientists it is our duty to fight against obscurantism and loss of rational thinking if we want politicians and citizens to freely make the most intelligent choices for the future gen- erations. With that aim, the scientific education and training of young students is an obvious and urgent necessity. We claim here that Hydra provides a highly versatile but cheap model organism to study biology at any age. Teachers of biology have the unenviable task of motivating young people, who with many other motivations that are quite valid, nevertheless must be guided along a path congruent with a ‘syllabus’ or a ‘curriculum’. The biology of Hydra spans the history of biology as an experimental science from Trembley’s first manipulations designed to determine if the green polyp he found was plant or animal to the dissection of the molecular cascades underpinning, regenera- tion, wound healing, stemness, aging and cancer. It is described here in terms designed to elicit its wider use in classrooms. Simple lessons are outlined in sufficient detail for beginners to enter the world of ‘Hydra biology’. Protocols start with the simplest observations to experiments that have been pretested with students in the USA and in Europe. The lessons are practical and can be used to bring ‘life’, but also rational thinking into the study of life for the teachers of students from elementary school through early university. -

Freshwater Jellyfish Craspedacusta sowerbyi www.seagrant.psu.edu Species at a Glance While similar in appearance to its saltwater relative, the freshwater jellyfish is actually considered a member of the hydra family, and not a “true” jellyfish. It is widespread around the world and has been in the United States since the early 1900’s. Even though this jellyfish uses stinging cells to capture prey, these stingers are too small to penetrate Map courtesy of United States human skin and are not considered a threat to people. Geological Survey. FRESHWATER JELLYFISH Species Description Craspedacusta sowerbyi The freshwater jellyfish exists in two main forms throughout its life. In the juvenile phase, it is a small, 1 mm long gelatinous polyp that lacks tentacles. In this phase the jellyfish attaches to hard surfaces and forms colonies. The freshwater jellyfish is most easily identified in its adult phase, as it has many of the characteristics of a true jellyfish such as a small, bell-shaped transparent body that is 5-25 mm in diameter. A whorl of string-like tentacles surround the circular edge of the body in sets of three to seven. The tentacles contain hundreds of specialized stinging cells that aid in capturing prey and protecting against predators. The size of Hydra is correlated with the numbers of epithelio- muscular and digestive cells in the distal portion of the animal and with the diameters of the k- epithelio-muscular cells in the peduncle. [ Counts of mitotic figures and tritiated-thymidine-labeled nuclei and determinations of T increase in mass of Hydra populations suggest that the difference caused by these tempera- y. tures does not affect mitosis. At 9 °C buds are initiated at a lower rate and take longer to develop than at 18 °C. The surface-areas of buds raised at the two temperatures are similar. T Because Hydra raised at the two temperatures have similar growth dynamics, the differences u in sizes of the animals cannot be due to growth rate. The observed effect of temperature on bud initiation and development is probably relevant to the increased size of animals raised at 9 "C, since these larger animals may be accumulating more cells while losing fewer to buds. INTRODUCTION The shape and size of Hydra seems to be a consequence of several dynamic processes. Growth, budding, cell sloughing, cell migration, and mesogleal metabolism have possible roles in Hydra morphogenesis (Burnett, 1961, 1966; Burnett & Hausman, 1969; Brien & Reniers-Decoen, 1949; Campbell, 1965, 1967 a, b, c, 1968; Shostak, Patel & Burnett, 1965; Shostak & Globus, 1966; Shostak, 1968). -
Hydra Magnipapillata
A Proposal to Construct a BAC Library from Hydra magnipapillata Submitted by Robert E. Steele and Hans R. Bode University of California, Irvine The importance of the organism to biomedical or biological research. Hydra has been the subject of experimental studies for over 200 years (Trembley, 1744). Its attractive features include (1) its ease of culture in the laboratory, (2) its simple structure, (3) a small number of cell types, (4) three cell lineages, each of which is a stem cell lineage, and (5) an extensive capacity for regeneration. Because of the tissue dynamics of an adult Hydra, the developmental processes governing pattern formation, morphogenesis, cell division, and cell differentiation are continuously active. Given its considerable capacity for regeneration as well as its being amenable to a variety of manipulations at the tissue and cell levels, most of the work up to the mid-1980s was focused on aspects of the developmental biology of Hydra. Primarily, these efforts involved gaining an understanding of formation and patterning of the single axis of the animal (Bode and Bode, 1984) as well as understanding the nature and control of cell division and differentiation of the stem cell lineages (Bode, 1996). With these aspects fairly well established, the emphasis shifted in the late 1980s to gaining an understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the elucidated developmental processes. Efforts were focused on looking for orthologues of genes affecting patterning and stem cell processes in bilaterians, which led to the isolation and characterization of >100 such genes. The variety of cell and tissue manipulations that had been developed proved, and are proving, valuable in sorting out the developmental roles of these genes with some precision. -

FAUTIN his ancient phylum of mostly marine organisms is best known for its contribution to geomorphological features, forming thousands of square Tkilometres of coral reefs in warm tropical waters. Their fossil remains contribute to some limestones. Cnidarians are also significant components of the plankton, where large medusae – popularly called jellyfish – and colonial forms like Portuguese man-of-war and stringy siphonophores prey on other organisms including small fish. Some of these species are justly feared by humans for their stings, which in some cases can be fatal. Certainly, most New Zealanders will have encountered cnidarians when rambling along beaches and fossicking in rock pools where sea anemones and diminutive bushy hydroids abound. In New Zealand’s fiords and in deeper water on seamounts, black corals and branching gorgonians can form veritable trees five metres high or more. In contrast, inland inhabitants of continental landmasses who have never, or rarely, seen an ocean or visited a seashore can hardly be impressed with the Cnidaria as a phylum – freshwater cnidarians are relatively few, restricted to tiny hydras, the branching hydroid Cordylophora, and rare medusae. Worldwide, there are about 10,000 described species, with perhaps half as many again undescribed. All cnidarians have nettle cells known as nematocysts (or cnidae – from the Greek, knide, a nettle), extraordinarily complex structures that are effectively invaginated coiled tubes within a cell. -
