PRESIDENT DAN GALLOWAY GLENLEA, BANANA QLD 4702 0407 499 006 [email protected] Dan Galloway is a part of the Ascot MEET Neimen Braford Studs alongside his parents THE Graham and Jill Galloway. Dan has been heavily involved in presenting the show team and sale bulls since finishing school in 2000. Ascot Neimen Brafords are currently running around 300 registered and 300 commercial breeders on four properties in the Banana area. The commercial side is focused on the grass fed EU market while the stud aspect is focused on the annual bull sale in September. Dan hopes to help promote the breed and increase breeder’s TEAM confidence in Brafords. VICE PRESIDENT RHONDA RYAN BANYULA, PO BOX 736 EMERALD QLD 4720 (07) 4982 3657 Rhonda runs a mixed farming operation just north of Emerald in Central Queensland, with around 50 registered Braford breeders and a similar number of commercial breeders. The stud was established in 1972 by her parents, Eric and Betty Burns. Being a smaller property, seasons heavily dictate the turn-off of steers; in good years they go direct to works, in poorer years are sold privately or through the local saleyards. Bulls and stud females are marketed at the DAN DANIEL RHONDA New Dimension and National Braford Sales. The herd is EU accredited and has been performance recorded with Breedplan for over 25 years. Rhonda strongly encourages members to join the Braford Group Breedplan, to gain and record objective data on the breed. Only by measurement can improvement be made. Rhonda has been promoting Brafords in the showring since 1991, and at the CQ Ag-Grow Field days LARRY KYM LES and has had success in the Callide Dawson Carcass Competition. “I believe carcass competitions are a great benchmarking tool our members can use – and Brafords hold their own very well. My motto is ‘Quietly achieving Quality’ and I strive to breed structurally correct functional cattle”.

TOTAL39 BRAFORD CATTLE CLASSIFIED TECHNICAL / WHY BREED BRAFORDS

WHY SHOULD YOU CHOOSE A BRAFORD BULL? The Braford bull is a great choice when looking for a sire to deliver an easy doing animal, while still delivering progeny with great carcass attributes. The Braford bull is a free ranging animal that can cover good distances and has a high virility to ensure the herd is covered. When used in a crossbreeding program, either over Bos Taurus or lndicus breeders, it WHY delivers a good hybrid result. BREED BRAFORDS? BRAFORD TRADE Braford steers and trade heifers are very adaptable animals, which is important in today’s climate of ever changing markets. The Braford steer’s strongest attribute is its ability to be marketed throughout the growth curve of the animal. It’s easy doing nature means it can deliver carcass attributes and muscle yield in varying environments. When tough weather conditions hit, it is important to be able to off load cattle at the best possible price. Sometimes it is not how much you make in the good times, it’s how much you lose in the bad times.

BRAFORD COW The Braford cow is a great option as a core breeder to launch into a cross breeding program. It is a moderate framed animal with good feed conversion and lower maintenance compared to some other breeds, yet delivers progeny that is very competitive. Fertility is one of her strongest attributes and in today’s times is the biggest driver of profit for any breeding operation.

and the pinnacle of all wins has to be at Beef 2009 when we were awarded the Supreme Champion Bull with Grandiose 2025. All those years of showing and hard work had paid off. At Beef 2006, our bull Rarcamba Territory was place second in his class of 14 and was noticed by a company called CIALE from South America, who went on to lease him for 12months for semen collection. In 1978 I became part of the Braford Management Committee and stood down in 2004, totalling 26 years. I had a turn at all positions except treasurer, and was president for the silver anniversary in 1987 and for Beef in 1988. I have fond memories of the early council years when we had a table of 12 with plenty of passionate debate held at four council meetings a year, as well as executive meetings in between. It was at the Sydney AGM in 2005 when I was presented with the Life Membership for my continuous service to the breed. A badge I am proud to wear. “Why Do You Breed Braford’s?” Because we love the cattle and they go anywhere. Our cattle have gone to Jindabyne in the snow, Parrabadoo in Western Australia, Alice Springs, Atherton and Central and Western Queensland. I believe they are the most productive beast available. I have tried crossing our cattle with Charolais and have come to the conclusion that some crossbreds may outweigh the Brafords, but you need to spend $300 on grain and handling to finish them while the Braford finishes off on oats earlier. Time and circumstances took control and we decided to sell Rarcamba to our neighbour, and semi retire to “Sandalwood” 3klm from Wandoan, which we had purchased some 17 years earlier. We had a major reduction sale of our stud cattle in October 2014, where most of our cows sold to fellow breeders. We are most grateful for their support. We retained 20 cows to give us a productive and active interest in life, and also keep in contact with our many fellow Braford Breeders. FEATURE / LITTLE VALLEY GRAZING CO CELEBRATING 50YEARS

39 FIELD DAYS / AG-GROW 2019 AG-GROW CENTRAL QUEENSLAND

BY RHONDA RYAN

2019 WAS THE THIRTIETH ANNUAL RUNNING OF THE AGRICULTURAL FIELD DAYS IN EMERALD, CENTRAL QUEENSLAND. BETWEEN 15 AND 20,000 PEOPLE ARE BELIEVED TO ATTEND THESE DAYS, WITH UP TO 450 EXHIBITORS COMING FROM ALL OVER AUSTRALIA TO SHOWCASE THEIR WARES. It was a frosty start to this year’s event, with hoses being frozen overnight making it difficult to water the cattle early in the mornings. The first day, Thursday, is usually a quiet affair, 2019 was no different. On Friday, there was some interest, with visitors to the site coming from mostly the northern areas around Collinsville, Nebo and Mackay areas but also from the Richmond/Hughenden area. Friday is also the day the Field Day’s All Breed Bull Sale is held and so most cattlemen head to the sale complex for that. Simmentals again topped the market this year with the other breeds finding the market a little tougher as a result of the continuing dry spell. On display were two rising two-year old bulls, a yearling steer and four weaner heifers. Comment was favourable and again the enquiry seemed to be more for females, people are realising their Braford females are an excellent article. I thank Dan Galloway for making the trip out to help support the site. I HAVE BOOKED THE SITE FOR 2020 AND ALL ARE WELCOME.

WELL ANOTHER YEAR HAS PAST AND THE DRY CONDITIONS ARE STILL ONGOING. Our year always starts with the youth camp at Wandoan. Robert and Lesette do a wonderful job in organising this and making sure everything runs smoothly. Many members give their time and cattle willingly to help the young people of all ages gain experience in handling and the preparation of cattle. Taroom Show was held in May with a quality line of cattle presented. The Braford cattle there certainly created a lot of interest with spectators. The judging was capably handled by well known breeder Warren Wilson and associate judge Airlie Treloar. Top honours going to Little Valley and Downfall Creek studs. Group members again participated in a promotional stand at Farmfest. This year we saw a steady flow of familiar faces as well as some cattle producers wanting further information on the breed. Having this stand, certainly helps with the promotion of the up coming sales. Many thanks to those who give their time to set up and dismantle the stand as well as providing cattle. The New Dimension sale was once again very successful with a quality yarding of bulls and young females. The results were very pleasing in consideration of the extremely dry outlook. Congratulations to the Amor family for topping the sale. A number of the South Qld group members again supported the National Sale in Rockhampton. Top sale of the day went to Little Valley. ANOTHER YEAR HAS GONE BY AND WITH TWO MEETINGS FOR THE YEAR. One was held at Robert Kliese’s property at Mutdapilly, where we talked about the use of certain grasses to help with soil erosion. We celebrated Christmas in July at our second meeting. This year we had two exhibitors from New South Wales, for the Braford Breed at the Exhibition. I would like to thank Ann, yet again, for her assistance in organizing the trophies for the Exhibition. Thank you to all the committee, to Ian and Kath and members for their strong support for the year. After experiencing the driest season in our lifetimes, we have all had to make sacrifices, mainly in the reduction of stock numbers, just to survive. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
