It is also a region highly dependent of fossil fuels. In order to address current and expected water demands, several countries in the region, including Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority (PA), are depending increasingly on desalination, which is expected to intensify energy consumption and energy related emissions. Given that the region also benefits from high levels of solar irradiation nearly year-round, much attention has been given to the possibility of developing renewable energy in general and for desalination specifically. This paper presents partial results of a pre-feasibility study assessing the prospects of transfers of desalinated water from Israel and/or the PA, which have access to the Mediterranean Sea, to Jordan, in exchange for renewable solar-produced electricity from Jordan, which, unlike its neighbors, has an abundance of available open space suitable for solar production. The analysis shows that single-axis tracking photovoltaic (PV) systems appear to be the most economically feasible option. Moreover, the study shows that the proposed idea of international cooperation and water-energy exchanges, while facing political obstacles, could provide numerous economic, environmental and geopolitical benefits to all parties involved. As such, an arrangement such as that examined may be a more promising means of promoting both desalination and renewable energy than if each country unilaterally develops desalination and renewable energy in isolation from one another. -

A landform unique to Israel, Egypt and Sinai desert, it is a large erosion cirque, created 220 million years ago when oceans covered the area. The Ramon Crater measures 40 km in length and between 2 and 10km in width, shaped like a long heart, and forms Israel’s largest national park, the Ramon Nature Reserve. • Ramon Visitors Center, located on the edge of Makhtesh Ramon is overlooking the Crater. It displays the geography, geology, flora, fauna and history of the region from prehistoric to modern times. A film explains how the Makhtesh was formed and a three-dimensional interactive model helps bring home an understanding of the topography of this unique region. • Sde Boker kibbutz is famous as the home of David Ben Gurion, Israel’s first Prime Minister whose home is now a museum open to the public, and is the feature of a number of supporting exhibits in the kibbutz. Sde Boker is a community founded in 1952 by a number of pioneering families who were later joined by Ben Gurion after an interesting encounter. This was just three months after the start of World War II. I arrived in Haifa on December 20, 1939. My brother, who was three years older than I, made Aliya three months earlier within the framework of Youth Aliya. My parents and two sisters were killed by the Germans, but this only became known to me some time later. In 1940 I was accepted as a student in the Max Fein Technical High School in Tel Aviv and started to learn metalworking. In 1941-42 there seemed to be a danger that the Germans might invade Palestine from the direction of Egypt and the sea, under the command of Field Marshal Rommel. I was a bit young but enlisted with almost the whole class, in the Hagana. I swore my loyalty to a fellow called Al Dema in the Borochov quarter of Givataim. Al Dema was the director of the Herzliya Gymnasium in Tel Aviv. We began training, with light weapons during the day and had field practice on Saturdays. We often stood watch at strategic locations to make certain that the Germans didn't try to land paratroopers there. The peak of our service was during the vacation period of the summer of 1942 when we were taken to an English camp at Tel Litvinsky and swore our loyalty to the English monarch. -

ABSTRACT Water is a scarce commodity in desert regions; yet, most remote sensing experiments of soil moisture have been conducted in temperate areas. The ability to detect and reliably assess soil moisture in the arid environment has important implications both at the micro scale such as the individual farm and at the macro scale for climate modeling. A series of experiments utilizing an airborne scatterometer operating at P-band were conducted to assess the ability to measure soil moisture over farmlands in the Negev Desert by remote sensing. The soil moisture is determined by measuring the backscattered radar signal at the scatterometer. Results show that in the arid environment of the Negev scatterometer data correlate well with field measured soil water content. The water content values measured were between 2 and 7% (volumetric). Some extreme values were measured at the Ramat Negev experimental farm. A later visit to the farm confirmed a faucet leak at the location of the extensive values (>20%.) We could also detect an increase in water content adjacent to a sewer reclemation pond at Mashabei Sadeh. A second series of experiments were conducted with spaceborne synthetic aperture radar using the ERS-2 SAR system. -
