News and appeals London arrest in Sussex 'County Lines' investigation 1 Police in London and Sussex have worked together to arrest a man on suspicion of drug dealing. In the early hours of Wednesday, 16 September the Home Secretary accompanied officers from the Metropolitan Police Service and Sussex Police on an operation targeting County Lines offending. Officers carried out a search warrant at an address in Brighton Terrace, Brixton and arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of supply of Class A drugs - crack cocaine and heroin. A search at the address is ongoing, but so far officers have recovered the phone believed to be used to control the County Line and a quantity of Class A drugs.

Around 4pm on Monday 1 March, two local boys aged 15 and 16 were assaulted by two other boys. The suspects were with another unknown male and female, and during this confrontation one of the victims had a breeze block thrown at him, causing bruising.

JILLIAN PATRICIA HAWKINS Thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy July 2011 UNIVERSITY OF WINCHESTER ABSTRACT FACULTY OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES Thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The significance of the place-name element *funta in the early middle ages. Jillian Patricia Hawkins The Old English place-name element *funta derives from Late Latin fontāna, “spring”, and is found today in 21 place-names in England. It is one of a small group of such Latin-derived elements, which testify to a strand of linguistic continuity between Roman Britain and early Anglo- Saxon England. *funta has never previously been the subject of this type of detailed study. The continued use of the element indicates that it had a special significance in the interaction, during the fifth and sixth centuries, between speakers of British Latin and speakers of Old English, and this study sets out to assess this significance by examining the composition of each name and the area around each *funta site. Any combined element is always Old English. The distribution of the element is in the central part of the south- east lowland region of England. It does not occur in East Anglia, East Kent, west of Warwickshire or mid-Wiltshire or north of Peterborough. Seven of the places whose names contain the element occur singly, the remaining fourteen appearing to lie in groups. The areas where *funta names occur may also have other pre-English names close by.

It consists of: • the National ANPR Service (NAS) which is a single national system comprising standardised functionality to enable use for operational response, investigation and intelligence purposes as well as a single national store of data, and; • the National ANPR Infrastructure (NAI), which is a network of ANPR cameras, communications links, firewalls and other related supporting components. Controllers The joint controllers for the NAS are: a) The ANPR lead within the National Policing Chief’s Council (NPCC) who is designated as the lead controller b) Chief officers of police forces in England & Wales (Schedule 1) c) The Heads of other LEAs (Schedule 1) d) The Secretary of State for the Home Department (HO) (Schedule 1) The controllers for the NAI are the chief officer of the police force or LEA that manages the components of the NAI within their organisation. OK, before we start there is an argument that the first motorway was opened a year earlier in 1958 and was called the Preston by-pass. However, it wasn’t designated as a motorway (part of the M6) until several years later and so the other side of the coin will argue that the first ‘official’ motorway, the M1 was opened on 2nd November 1959. But the fact remains that from 1958/9 Britain’s motorway network expanded across the country and is now an integral part of our transport system and our everyday lives. And for obvious reasons it needs policing and so we find ourselves here in particular celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Policing the Motorway. Those Police officers who have worked on ‘the strip’ over the years will have an affinity towards it that is hard to describe. It can be an extremely dangerous place to work but it can also be an exhilarating one.
