Journal of Social Studies Education Research Sosyal Bilgiler Eğitimi Araştırmaları Dergisi 2019:10 (4),357-369 www.jsser.org Literature and Cinema: Ways of Interaction in the 21ST Century Zulfia Zinnatullina1, Diana Davletbaeva2and Reseda Mukhametshina3 Abstract The research is based on the analysis of interaction of different forms of art: cinema and literature. Cinema is in very close connection with literature since the moment of emergence. In spite of this various discussions about the literature and cinema’s interaction continue. There is no consensus about the status of film adaptation, its fidelity approach or the influence of film to the text reception. It is possible to speak about the variety of types of relationship existing today between cinema and literature. For a long time, it was considered that cinema plays a secondary role in comparison with literature. The only possible algorithm of interaction between these types of arts is "literary work- scenario-screen version". However, there is a strong tendency towards the impact of cinema on setting new trends in literature. Along with the traditional “literary work – scenario – screen version” algorithm we also consider "literary work – scenario – screen version – literary work" (when details which appeared in the screen version influence the following parts of a literary work) or "scenario – movie – literary work" (when a literary work is created on the basis of the original scenario or the movie). Today writers and directors look for new ways of transferring of one art form’s peculiarities into another. As a result, we can speak about the existing interdependence between them. Key words: cinema, literature, interaction, intermediality, novelization, adaptation.

  • The Study of Novelisation: a Typology and Secondary Bibliography
Belphégor Thomas Van Parys K.U. Leuven The study of novelisation: A typology and secondary bibliography The phenomenon of novelisation is remarkably widely underresearched, even within adaptation studies, which has generally limited itself – until quite recently – to the one-sided direction of literature to film. Considering that the field of ‘film and literature’, which has vigorously started emancipating itself over the past decade, has traditionally been regarded as only a subfield of film studies, it is obvious that the study of novelisation is rather marginal in the grand scholarly universe, in the film department as well as the literature department. While film adaptation studies focus on the adaptation from novel to film, literary science is primarily occupied with the study of highbrow literature. Needless to say, novelisations are widely derided and discarded as low forms of paraliterature. But the genre is peripheral in content as well, since the novelisation is a ‘hybrid’ form, often mixing film, literature, screenplay, and even film photography into one package. It is in other words ‘the odd novel out’ in the disciplinary academic world. Here I make a plea for more attention to novelisations, not to demand respectability for these novels per se (for bad writing is unfortunately the rule rather than the exception), but to show its significance and ubiquity as a cultural and literary practice. The novelisation is ideally suited to refine, modify, and perhaps subvert the typical pet peeves in film adaptation studies, such as the assumption of linearity or the notion of fidelity. In this essay, though, I will not concern myself much with the theoretical implications or the historical roots of novelisation.

In the critical component of the dissertation, I argue that the network must be understood as a writing and reading environment distinct from both print and from discrete computer applications. In the introduction, I situate recent network literature within the context of electronic literature produced prior to the launch of the World Wide Web, establish the current range of experiments in electronic literature, and explore some of the advantages and disadvantages of writing and publishing literature for the network. In the second chapter, I examine the development of the book as a technology, analyze “electronic book” distribution models, and establish the difference between the “electronic book” and “electronic literature.” In the third chapter, I interrogate the ideas of linking, nonlinearity, and referentiality.

The Alien Covenant novel stays close to what ended up on screen, but this is not a simple summary of a movie. Think of this book as an extended cut of Covenant, with more 'internal dialogue' type of scenes more dialogue scenes between characters. Some characters really benefit from the extra content, especially Oram (the scene with the eggs now makes him seem much less stupid/gullible) David(you really get a sense of what his thought processes are like, yikes). Sometimes the novel is slightly different than the movie (Walter gets much more 'internal dialogue' stuff, the hypersleep reveal at the end is way, way more subtle than the theatrical ending), but there are no real drastic changes. Alan Dean Foster's writing is great as always, and I'm glad he was picked to do the novelization.

  • The Hollywood Novelization: Film As Literature Or Literature As Film Promotion?
The Hollywood Novelization: Film as Literature or Literature as Film Promotion? Johannes Mahlknecht University of Innsbruck, American Studies Abstract Hollywood movie novelizations are novels based on mainstream films and published about the time these films are released in theaters. The present article explores the ambiguous status of this generally little- esteemed and frequently ignored form of adaptation. On the one hand, novelizations are works of literature that can be enjoyed without knowledge of the film they are based on; on the other, they can be (and often are) seen as mere tools of film advertising. This latter aspect becomes particularly evident when looking at the cover design of a novelization. It invariably features the film’s artwork (the poster image, stills, and/or typography used for promoting the film) and frequently highlights the film’s stars rather than the book’s author. By analyzing a selection of book covers of novelized versions of recent films and comparing the novelization of Terminator Salvation (Foster 2009b) with the film Terminator( Salvation 2009, dir. McG) it is based on, the article traces and exam- ines the frictions between the opposing forces—literature and film marketing—that define the genre. This article was written as part of the research project Framing Media: The Periphery of Fic- tion and Film at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and headed by Mario Klarer. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Meir Sternberg and the anonymous referees of Poetics Today for their many priceless suggestions that helped improve this article.
