NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY Myth and the Modern Problem: Mythic Thinking in Twentieth-Century Britain A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Field of History By Matthew Kane Sterenberg EVANSTON, ILLINOIS December 2007 2 © Copyright by Matthew Kane Sterenberg 2007 All Rights Reserved 3 ABSTRACT Myth and the Modern Problem: Mythic Thinking in Twentieth-Century Britain Matthew Sterenberg This dissertation, “Myth and the Modern Problem: Mythic Thinking in Twentieth- Century Britain,” argues that a widespread phenomenon best described as “mythic thinking” emerged in the early twentieth century as way for a variety of thinkers and key cultural groups to frame and articulate their anxieties about, and their responses to, modernity. As such, can be understood in part as a response to what W.H. Auden described as “the modern problem”: a vacuum of meaning caused by the absence of inherited presuppositions and metanarratives that imposed coherence on the flow of experience. At the same time, the dissertation contends that— paradoxically—mythic thinkers’ response to, and critique of, modernity was itself a modern project insofar as it took place within, and depended upon, fundamental institutions, features, and tenets of modernity. Mythic thinking was defined by the belief that myths—timeless rather than time-bound explanatory narratives dealing with ultimate questions—were indispensable frameworks for interpreting experience, and essential tools for coping with and criticizing modernity. Throughout the period 1900 to 1980, it took the form of works of literature, art, philosophy, and theology designed to show that ancient myths had revelatory power for modern life, and that modernity sometimes required creation of new mythic narratives. -

The Seminar was part of the Montgomery Arts Guild, an organization which was active in promoting and sponsoring cultural events. Held during July, the Seminar hosted readings by notable poets, offered creative writing workshops, held creative writing contests, and featured musical performances. -

Howard Nemerov's War Poetry
Diederik Oostdijk Debunking ‘The Good War’ Myth: Howard Nemerov’s War Poetry This essay offers the most comprehensive analysis to date of Howard Nemerov’s war poetry. Nemerov (1920–1991) was a fighter pilot of the Royal Air Force and the U.S. Air Force during World War II and became one the most prolific American poets of that war. Whereas his early poems about World War II tend to be impersonal and dense, his later war poems, especially those in War Stories (1987) are more autobiographical and lyri- cal. Throughout his career Nemerov resisted the idea that World War II had been a ‘Good War’ and all of his poems are testimony to his traumatic experiences as a fighter pilot. “Poetry is a way of getting something right in language” Howard Nemerov, “On the Measure of Poetry” Of all the American poets who were involved in and emerged after World War II, Howard Nemerov (1920–1991) tried to debunk ‘The Good War’ myth most consistently and assertively.1 Nemerov published over twenty-five volumes of poetry, won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, was poetry con- sultant at the Library of Congress, and was awarded the National Medal of the Arts in 1987, the highest distinction the American government can bestow on its artists. Despite all the prizes and awards given to him during his lifetime, Nemerov was quickly forgotten by literary historians after his death, partly because of his reputation as an opaque and intellectual poet and partly because his life was less controversial than that of some of his contemporaries, for instance James Dickey and Robert Lowell. -

Born in Brooklyn, New York, he attended university at Georgetown and Cambridge, where he studied with I.A. Richards, and Columbia, where he studied law. In 1942 he was appointed curator of Harvard Library’s Poetry Room (established in 1931 and specialising in twentieth century poetry in English); curator of the Farnsworth Room in 1945; and Subject Specialist in English Literature in 1947. Stratis Haviaras writes in The Harvard Librarian that ‘Though five other curators preceded him, Jack Sweeney is considered the Father of the Poetry Room …’. 1 He oversaw the Poetry Room’s move to the Lamont Library, ‘establishing its philosophy and its role within the library system and the University; and he endowed it with an international reputation’.2 He also lectured in General Education and English at Harvard. The Inventory of works by and about Creeley which comprises more than half of this dissertation documents the publication process that brought him to this stature. The companion Writing Biography establishes Creeley additionally as the key impulse in the new American writing movement that found its first outlet in Origin, Black Mountain Review, Divers Books, Jargon Books, and other alternative little magazines and presses in the fifties. After the second world war a new generation of writers began to define themselves in opposition to the New Criticism and academic poetry then prevalent and in support of Pound and Williams, and as these writers started to appear in tentative little magazines a further definition took place.
