  • Evapotranspiration Enhancement Drives the European Water-Budget
https://doi.org/10.5194/hess-2021-230 Preprint. Discussion started: 27 April 2021 c Author(s) 2021. CC BY 4.0 License. Evapotranspiration enhancement drives the European water-budget deficit during multi-year droughts Christian Massari1,*, Francesco Avanzi2, Giulia Bruno2, 4, Simone Gabellani2, Daniele Penna3, and Stefania Camici1 1National Research Council (CNR), Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection, Perugia, 06126, Italy 2Cima Research Foundation, 17100, Savona, Italy 3University of Florence, Firenze, Italy 4University of Genoa, DIBRIS, 16145, Genova, Italy *[email protected] Correspondence: Christian Massari ([email protected]) Abstract. In a warming climate, periods with below-than-average precipitation will increase in frequency and intensity. During such periods, known as meteorological droughts, sparse but consistent pieces of evidence show that the decline in annual runoff may be proportionally larger than the corresponding decline in precipitation (e.g., -40% vs. -20%). Reasons behind this exacerbation 5 of runoff deficit during dry periods remain largely unknown, which challenges generalization at larger scales (i.e., beyond the single catchment), as well as the predictability of when this exacerbation will occur and how intense it will be. Here, we tested the hypothesis that runoff-deficit exacerbation during droughts is a common feature of droughts across climates and is driven by evapotranspiration enhancement. We support this hypothesis by relying on multidecadal records of streamflow and precipitation for more than 200 catchments across various European climates, which distinctively show the emergence of similar periods of 10 exacerbated runoff deficit identified in previous studies, i.e., runoff deficit on the order of -20% to -40% less than what expected from precipitation deficit.

“The Abhorred Name of Turk”: Muslims and the Politics of Identity in Seventeenth- Century English Broadside Ballads A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Katie Sue Sisneros IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Dr. Nabil Matar, adviser November 2016 Copyright 2016 by Katie Sue Sisneros Acknowledgments Dissertation writing would be an overwhelmingly isolating process without a veritable army of support (at least, I felt like I needed an army). I’d like to acknowledge a few very important people, without whom I’d probably be crying in a corner, having only typed “My Dissertation” in bold in a word document and spending the subsequent six years fiddling with margins and font size. I’ve had an amazing committee behind me: John Watkins and Katherine Scheil braved countless emails and conversations, in varying levels of panic, and offered such kind, thoughtful, and eye-opening commentary on my work that I often wonder what I ever did to deserve their time and attention. And Giancarlo Casale’s expertise in Ottoman history has proven to be equal parts inspiring and intimidating. Also, a big thank you to Julia Schleck, under whom I worked during my Masters degree, whose work was the inspiration for my entry into Anglo-Muslim studies. The bulk of my dissertation work would have been impossible (this is not an exaggeration) without access to one of the most astounding digital archives I’ve ever seen. The English Broadside Ballad Archive, maintained by the Early Modern Center in the English Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has changed markedly over the course of the eight or so years I’ve been using it, and the tireless work of its director Patricia Fumerton and the whole EBBA team has made it as comprehensive and intuitive a collection as any scholar could ask for.

  • The Symbolic Rape of Representation: a Rhetorical Analysis of Black Musical Expression on Billboard's Hot 100 Charts
THE SYMBOLIC RAPE OF REPRESENTATION: A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF BLACK MUSICAL EXPRESSION ON BILLBOARD'S HOT 100 CHARTS Richard Sheldon Koonce A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 2006 Committee: John Makay, Advisor William Coggin Graduate Faculty Representative Lynda Dee Dixon Radhika Gajjala ii ABSTRACT John J. Makay, Advisor The purpose of this study is to use rhetorical criticism as a means of examining how Blacks are depicted in the lyrics of popular songs, particularly hip-hop music. This study provides a rhetorical analysis of 40 popular songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles Charts from 1999 to 2006. The songs were selected from the Billboard charts, which were accessible to me as a paid subscriber of Napster. The rhetorical analysis of these songs will be bolstered through the use of Black feminist/critical theories. This study will extend previous research regarding the rhetoric of song. It also will identify some of the shared themes in music produced by Blacks, particularly the genre commonly referred to as hip-hop music. This analysis builds upon the idea that the majority of hip-hop music produced and performed by Black recording artists reinforces racial stereotypes, and thus, hegemony. The study supports the concept of which bell hooks (1981) frequently refers to as white supremacist capitalist patriarchy and what Hill-Collins (2000) refers to as the hegemonic domain. The analysis also provides a framework for analyzing the themes of popular songs across genres. The genres ultimately are viewed through the gaze of race and gender because Black male recording artists perform the majority of hip-hop songs.
