The Newsletter of the People of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church State College, Pennsylvania

With God’s help, we the people of St. Andrew’s seek to know and accept God’s love in Jesus Christ for all people and to witness to God’s love in word and action.

LAISSEZ LES BONS TEMPS ROULER aka THE SHROVE TUESDAY SUPPER

So, in , it used to get really hot. Really, really hot. Just like today, but imagine it with no refrigerators. Now, imagine it is the day before and for the next 40 days at the stroke of midnight you are going to not only be on your best behavior, but you’re going to give up , eclairs, macaroons, St. Honore and well, basically, you’re not going to eat anything good. So, you’ve got hot, no refrigerator and nothing good to eat. Now what are you going to do? You’re going to party like it’s going out of style, and you’re going to use all the flour, sugar, eggs and butter you have because after 40 days (remember the no refrigeration thing), it ain’t going to be good. And what do you get when you combine those ingredients? and king cakes! Therefore, St. Andrew’s will be doing its part to let the good times roll and host a Shrove Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday as they say in The Big Easy, pancake supper. It will be held on Tuesday, February 28 from 5 PM- 7PM in Canterbury Hall. The meal will be all-you-can-eat and will include pancakes, sausage, eggs, applesauce and the assorted King or two. Tickets in Advance are $6 for adults and $4 for those 12 and under. Buy your tickets early because after February 26, they will be $8 for adults and $5 for those 12 and under.

LETTER FROM THE SEARCH COMMITTEE The call has gone out for our new rector. The position was officially posted in mid-January and we are accepting applications from now until March 21st. If you have not had a chance to view our Parish Profile, it is posted on the St. Andrew’s website. At this point, the goal is for our profile to reach our new rector. In addition to the normal channels, spreading our story via word of mouth is often a great way to share the fact that we are looking for a new rector. Therefore, feel free to share our profile with anyone you know who may be interested or whom you feel may be a great candidate. We continue to work closely with the Diocese. Father Dan Morrow, the Diocesan Transitional Minister, will be visiting St. Andrews on Sunday February 26th. He will meet with the Search Committee following the 10:30 AM service to review the next steps in the search process once the application period ends. The Search Committee asks for your continued support and prayers. If you have any question or comments, please do not hesitate to reach out to anyone on the committee or email us at [email protected]. Andrea de Carle and Ford McNutt Co-Chairs of The Search Committee

KAI PAUL HRABOVSKY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND: Community Foundation for the Alleghenies

Kai Hrabovsky, grandson of parishioners Tony and Vicky Ponish, was killed in a hit-and-run accident last May. His family has established a scholarship fund in his honor. If you would like to remember Kai with a donation, you can do so online (click here) or by check payable to "Community Foundation for the Alleghenies" with Hrabovsky Scholarship in the memo line. Checks should be mailed to Community Foundation for the Alleghenies, 116 Market Street, Suite 4, Johnstown, PA 15901.

INTERESTED ADULTS: EPISCOPAL VISITATION, MARCH 26

Our bishop, the Rt. Rev. Audrey Scanlan, will be making a visitation to St. Andrew's on Sunday, March 26, and will preside at our worship on that day. Included in that worship will be the rites of Confirmation and Reception, which are required for full adult membership in the Episcopal Church. In addition, anyone wishing to renew the vows made at baptism also may be presented to the Bishop for Renewal. Unlike Confirmation and Reception, which only are undertaken and received once, Renewal may be undertaken and received as often as the Holy Spirit moves a person to do so.

Adults wishing to be presented for Confirmation, Reception and Renewal on Sunday, March 26, should call the church office and express their interest to Allison. Those previously prepared though Episcopalian 101 will be provided with the necessary paperwork to be presented, and those needing preparation will be invited to join a preparation experience that will begin meeting this month. Questions? Please contact me.

Doug+ LECTIO DIVINA All are invited to join in an opportunity of spiritual reflection through reading, meditation and prayer. Lectio Divina is a practice that invites us to slow down, dialogue with God through the Scriptures, and manifest this relationship in our lives. Whether you are a committed practitioner or are interested in exploring a new prayer path, all are invited to participate in this ancient monastic ritual. Lectio Divina will be held on the following dates this spring in the Library from 9:15 AM- 10:15 AM: February 19, March 19, April 23, and May 21. EVENING PRAYER Evening Prayer has been a major component in the prayer life of Anglicans since the 1552 revision of the Book of Common Prayer. It’s a simple service that allows us to decompress from the busyness and stress of the day. Reminiscent of the Eucharist, Evening Prayer incorporates prayer, scripture, and the profession of our faith through the Apostle’s Creed. Please join us each Wednesday at 5:15 PM in the chapel for 20 minutes of prayer, reflection and spiritual refreshment. Contact Kevin Barron at [email protected] with any questions.

EVENSONG AT ST. ANDREW'S

On Sunday, February 5th, at 5 PM, the Adult Choir of St. Andrew's will offer a service of choral evensong according to the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. This book is still the official prayer book of the Church of England. Music in the service will include the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in C by Stanford, the anthem Ye That Do Your Master’s Will by George Dyson and a setting of the Preces and Responses by Thomas Tallis. The Rev. Douglas Daily, interim rector at St. Andrew's, will be the officiant.

Prior to the Reformation, prayer in the early evening or late afternoon was known as the office of Vespers, one of the eight Canonical Hours of the divine office of the Western church. However, in 1549, a prayer book known as the Book of Common Prayer was adopted in the context of the English Reformation. Bishop Thomas Cranmer established the office of Evensong using elements taken from both Vespers and Compline, generally to be conducted in the English language, as was the case with the entire liturgy.

After a series of slight modifications, the office of Evensong took its modern form in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England, a form that is followed very closely throughout the whole of the Anglican and Episcopal Church throughout the world.

Evensong, like all forms of liturgical worship, has elements of drama and ritual that nourish the spiritual life of all of us. It is based entirely on elements of Holy Scripture and it is scripted according to a long history, originating in Judaic and early Christian evening worship. Evensong is traditionally mostly sung by a choir, with the full congregation participating throughout in thoughtful prayer, allowing the music to soothe us and to draw us closer to the presence of God. The congregation also joins in the spoken parts of the liturgy: the reciting of the Confession and the Creed, as well as singing the hymns.

Please join us for this service. A reception will follow in Room 325.

ST. ANDREW’S VESTRY UPDATE JANUARY 2017

The first vestry meeting of 2017 held on Monday evening, January 16, opened with the welcoming of the four newly elected vestry members: Rose Bohn, Peter Chamberlain, Tom Dauler, and Steven Smith. The continuing members of the vestry look forward to working with these new members to provide guidance, support, and oversight to parish operations for the coming year. In a separate action after the meeting, officers of the 2017 vestry were elected via a special e-mail ballot of vestry members. Fr. Doug appointed Linda Mace as Senior Warden a.k.a Rector’s Warden, and the following officers were unanimously elected to one-year terms:

Sharon Rovansek, Junior Warden a.k.a. People’s Warden Sue Stephenson, Treasurer Mary Andrew, Financial Secretary Rick Hoover, Clerk

In other business, the Finance Committee reported that after spending a long period operating under monthly deficits, December saw a welcome change, and the committee was happy to report a small surplus as of the end of the year. The vestry expressed a hearty THANK YOU to all who contributed to St. Andrew’s in 2016! The 2017 budget was formally accepted. The report from the rector search committee noted that the position as the next settled rector for St. Andrew’s is officially open, and the job opening was posted on the national church website for job openings. Finally, a special thank you to the members of the St. Andrew’s community for their support with time, talent, and treasure.

Respectfully submitted, Rick Hoover Clerk of the Vestry

LETTER FROM THE WARDENS

Friends,

As we begin our year of service as Wardens, we want to share a few things with you. First, we want to welcome the four new members to your Vestry – Rose Bohn, Peter Chamberlain, Tom Dauler, and Steven Smith – and to thank the four members who have completed their terms for their service – Julia Kasdorf, Dennis Houseman, Wendi Keeler, and David Spencer.

As announced at the Annual Meeting on January 15, the Parish Profile is now available on the St. Andrew’s web site. It contains information that potential applicants for our Rector position need but it is also informative for all of us. The profile document contains information from the survey, from the listening events, and from our parish register. The history information helps us all to know more about those who brought us to this time. Thank you to the Profile Committee for their outstanding work to prepare this document for us.

The Parish Profile was an essential step for listing our Rector position on the Episcopal Church Office of Transition Ministry database. We are now in a period of time while we await the names of those who express interest in our position. Then the work of our Search Committee will begin to evaluate the applicants. Applications are being accepted through the end of March. Please keep the Search Committee in your prayers as it reviews potential candidates for Rector.

We are still in a state of transition and we appreciate your prayers and support for all of us – Vestry, Search Committee, Staff, Fr. Doug. If you have questions or comments, please contact one of us and we will get you a response.

Linda Mace, Sr. Warden Sharon Rovansek, Jr. Warden [email protected]

COMMUNITY CAFÉ

Planning for the Trivia Night fundraiser kept the Café hopping more than usual this month. First, we need to thank everyone who either came to the event or donated very generously to support the Cafe. The goodwill of our parish and the community is what makes this Cafe work. Special thanks go to: Bob and Ann Shepherd who donated cookies, prizes, the wine and the Sam Adams; Peter Chamberlain who wrote questions, figured out how to keep score and put them all into a Powerpoint; Donna Trapp for kitchen help, for keeping score and keeping the quiz master on track; Jeff Trapp for being the man in the kitchen who not only did dishes but kept the wings and coming; Joan Dimarcello for help with the cooking; our companion parish, St. John's in Bellefonte for their financial contributions and hospitality when I dropped by; the support of Vestry and our rector Doug Dailey for their support of this new fundraiser; to Champions Trophy in Bellefonte who built and engraved us a trophy in less than 24 hours; and to Scott Luzier who basically does everything. Trivia Night raised $1670.61 so we are very excited to move forward with the installation of a dedicated handwashing sink and buying some very much needed equipment. The Café was also the beneficiary of some very dedicated volunteers from Penn State. These students scrubbed the kitchen from top to bottom in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Special thanks goes to Marion Schwartz for facilitating this wonderful effort. Our next venture is a lot less work for us, but we are looking forward to it. Our companion parish, St. John’s in Bellefonte, will be holding their annual Chili Cookoff on Saturday, February 4 from 4 PM-7 PM. Ron Rovansek will represent the Community Café with his secret chili recipe and hopefully bring home the trophy, although the gauntlet was thrown down by Father Chris who said, ‘He should keep in mind that the rector and Junior Warden tied for first last year, so competition will be fierce!’ Stay tuned and look for live updates on our Facebook page throughout the day on Saturday.

ST. ANDREW’S MEN’S GROUP

It was great seeing everyone at the last men's group meeting! We agreed to meet again on Monday, February 13, at 7:30 PM at Happy Valley Brewing located at 137 Elmwood Street in State College, so add that to your calendars!

All are welcome.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) PG (profanity, sex, violence) February 24 This funny-as-hell British slapstick comedy film parodies the legend of King Arthur's quest to find the Holy Grail. Monty Python and the Holy Grail grossed more than any British film exhibited in the US in 1975. The film received a 97% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus: "a cult classic as gut-bustingly hilarious as it is blithely ridiculous". In the US, the film was selected as the second best comedy of all time in the ABC special Best in Film: The Greatest Movies of Our Time.

I Confess (1953) Not Rated March 24

A forgotten Hitchcock masterpiece, this thriller about a priest accused of murder – bound to keep secret the confession made to him by the real killer – smoulders gloriously. Montgomery Clift’s performance as Father Michael Logan is a masterclass in subtlety and it was said by critics of the day that he interiorises so much feeling as this tormented priest, you sometimes started to wonder if he were acting at all.

The Way (2010) PG-13 (thematic elements, drug use, smoking) April 24 The Way is a 2010 American drama film directed, produced and written by Emilio Estevez, starring his father Martin Sheen. The film honors the Camino de Santiago and promotes the traditional pilgrimage. Saying he did not want the film to appeal to only one demographic, Emilio Estevez called the film "pro- people, pro-life, not anti-anything".

Silence (2016) Rated R (some disturbing violent content) May 19

Martin Scorsese tells the story of two Christian missionaries who face the ultimate test of faith when they travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor at a time when Christianity was outlawed and their presence forbidden. The celebrated director's 28-year journey to bring Shusaku Endo's 1966 acclaimed novel to life is magnificent. RogerEbert.com gave the film four out of four stars, stating that, "Silence is a monumental work, and a punishing one. It puts you through hell with no promise of enlightenment, only a set of questions and propositions, sensations and experiences...This is not the sort of film you 'like' or 'don't like.' It's a film that you experience and then live with."

ST. ANDREW’S BOOK GROUP

At our last meeting, we had a good discussion of If the Oceans were Ink, a book suggested by Anne Thomas. Anne shared with us her experiences living in the Middle East, which greatly contributed to our discussion of Islam. A good-sized group of ten members were present.

The group selected for our February meeting Tribe by Sebastian Junger. Subtitled On Homecoming and Belonging, this book looks at the factors that bring people into community and includes a look at the impact of war on community identity. We will meet on Tuesday, February 28, at 7 PM in Room 324 to discuss the book.

The January meeting also marked the completion of the Book Group’s first year (our first organizational meeting was in February 2016). We agreed to continue to meet monthly—on the fourth Tuesday of the month—for the coming year. We also discussed the idea that, in the case of some longer works, we may want to focus on a particular section of a book. This would enable people to complete the reading and would help focus the discussion.

If you have suggestions for future books to read, please share them with the group.

CHURCH SCHOOL Children’s Chapel

Children ages three to 2nd grade meet in Room 119 for Children’s Chapel every Sunday at 10:30 AM. In January, the children had opportunities to talk about Jesus as the Lamb of God; they had fun making a poster of a lamb with cotton balls and talking about how God provides and cares for them. They made a wonderful picture of the Kingdom of God, where one child said it was a paradise! In this paradise there were fluffy pink unicorns, friendly giants, a green banana house, a giant red peregrine falcon, and lots of other characters to make up God’s Kingdom. The children also enjoy snack together every Sunday before joining their parents in church at The Peace. Thank you to Children’s Chapel leaders and helpers Susan Dawson, Katie Gaines, Kendall Mainzer, Andrea McCloskey, Meira Minard and Darlene Nordoff.

Young Children & Worship and Godly Play Children from both classes join together to experience stories from the Young Children & Worship and Godly Play curricula. In January, children experienced the stories of Holy Baptism, Jesus in the Wilderness, The Parable of the Mustard Seed, and Jesus & the Storm. Thank you to Marisa Ferger, Kathy Hickner, Paul Humphreys, Paul Markowski, Tina and Jenna Ruberto, and Julie Wunz for their dedication, faith sharing and storytelling.

4th/5th Grade Class Thank you to Madeline Johnson for her dedication to coordinating and caring for the children in this 4th/5th grade class. In January, the children completed their journey to Bethlehem and then began lessons from the online Episcopal Digital Network. Thank you to Robin Bastress, Pam Couch, Madeline Johnson, Michele Hamilton, and Tiffany Muller for teaching and assisting.

JOURNEY HIGH SCHOOL and JOURNEY MIDDLE SCHOOL CHAMEAU January 6-8 PYE 2017 in Maryland and Follow-up Lesson Paul Humphreys, Kelley Paulsen and youth: Abbey Humphreys, Abbie Loviscky, Simon Murphy, Dylan Novotny, Ainsley Pauslen, Zach Paulsen, and Cassandra Wade attended the Provincial Youth Event (PYE 2017) in Maryland. A young adult artist created paintings inspired by the guest priest’s talks; each congregation attending participated in one of the drawings for one of the paintings and St. Andrew’s was the first name drawn. The Journey Chameau youth have been using this painting Rise Up, Take Courage and Do It and quotations from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to create their own mini inspirational paintings. Stay tuned; one Sunday they just may appear in Canterbury Hall to inspire you, too! January 29 Dinner and Bunco! On Sunday, January 29, youth and leaders enjoyed a scrumptious Italian dinner in Canterbury Hall – thank you to all the parents and leaders who contributed to the meal! A special thank you to Marcia Saiers, an 8:00er, who donated the lasagna! Another special thank you to Kathy Hickner, who managed the set up and clean up for all! Three high school youth were wonderful role models for our Journey Middle Schoolers; several youth mentioned how the high schoolers took an interest in and talked with them. Bunco can be a fast-paced and exciting game, yet, there can be some lulls in a round. One middle schooler mentioned she was getting bored during a quiet moment, but the two high schoolers at the table talked about the benefits of board games, and how one was out of town and came back specifically to play Bunco! Thank you, Leah Patzkowsky, Connor Shea and Cass Wade for your leadership and participation. Prizes were given to: Ainsley Paulsen (Most Buncos), Leah Patzkowsky (Most Wins), Dylan Novotny (Even Card), Wunz (Most Losses), and Connor Shea, who was caught “holding the fuzzy dice!” A special “shout out” to Nolan Markowski for being such a good sport; everyone thought Nolan had won Most Losses, but then Charlotte saw she had the same number of losses. After an exciting roll off, Charlotte won. However, Nolan, was a gracious and good sport!
