TRUDY COWAN VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION How many years have you been involved as a volunteer at AWARD, LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT Lougheed House? Thirteen years. THE FUTURE LOOKED BRIGHT: ART DECO IN EVERYDAY LIFE February 21 - April 29, 2018 This exhibit showcased domestic art deco objects from local Calgary collectors, highlighting a period of Calgary and Lougheed House history known for its unique design aesthetic and new technologies. The exhibit featured a variety of objects from vacuum cleaners to ashtrays that combined practicality with the art deco look.

WILD IN THE WEST May 9 - June 10, 2018 Botanical art is a blending of art and science, producing delicate artworks that accurately depict plant species. The artworks in Wild in the West represented plants native to Alberta, in celebration of the Botanical Art Worldwide project that seeks to create a record of the world’s biodiversity through local botanical illustrations.

FORMED BY SAND June 21 - September 30, 2018 This exhibition explored early resource development, the relationship between Calgary’s sandstone and Alberta’s oil sands, and our relationship with the land, specifically stone. It also asked broader EXPRESS questions related to our relationship with the land: Does looking at human history through the lens of geologic time affect how we view our 10 own histories? What stories can be told through stones? 11 Programming Highlights

IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES INSPIRED BY LOUGHEED HOUSE’S UNIQUE STORIES AND CALGARY’S CULTURAL & HISTORICAL LANDSCAPE The success of 2018 reflects the contributions of many amazing collaborators. Local improv troupe The Kinkonauts offered a glimpse into the making of a 1920s radio play (complete with a real Foley table) during RadioDaze. Calgary Pride’s Reading with Royalty program added glamour and an engaging story time to our annual Beltline Garden Festival while celebrating diversity and inclusion with all our guests. Breakfast with Santa gave children and parents alike a new immersive way of sharing in the magic of Christmas, including getting to see Santa really arrive on the Lougheed House roof! Escape Capers featured a House-wide puzzle experience, the Holly Jolly Christmas Caper, which sold out at 600 participants between Christmas and New Year’s. We produced 24 public programs, both ticketed and free, which were filled with fun and immersive experiences that encouraged our guests to explore and interact with the history of Lougheed House in new ways.

LAUNCHING MÉTIS PIONEERS BOOK AT LOUGHEED HOUSE Lougheed House offered the perfect venue to launch Red Deer-based historian Doris MacKinnon‘s newest book, Métis Pioneers, which explores the life of Isabella Clark Hardisty Lougheed of Lougheed House and Marie Rose Delorme Smith of Pincher Creek. Both women were Métis, and both were born in 1861. These resilient and early settlers of Alberta, despite experiencing the difficult transition out of the fur trade economy, flourished as important community leaders.
