This project analyzes the depictions of Black women in two blockbuster movies and explicates the messages of each character. -

INTRODUCING OUR GRANDMOTHERS Cheryl Harris begins her canonical piece, Whiteness as Property, by in troducing her grandmother Alma. Fair skinned with straight hair and aquiline features, Alma "passes" so that she can feed herself and her two daughters. Harris speaks of Alma's daily illegal border crossing into this land reserved for whites. After a day's work, Alma returns home each evening, tired and worn, laying aside her mask and reentering herself.! "No longer immediately identifiable as 'Lula's daughter,' Alma could enter the white world, albeit on a false passport, not merely passing, but trespassing. "2 In this powerful metaphorical narrative of borders and trespass, of masking and unmasking, of leaving home and returning to reenter one self, we feel the central truths of Harris's theory. She asserts that white ness and property share the premise and conceptual nucleus of a right to exclude,3 that the rhetorical move from slave and free to black and white was central to the construction of race,4 that property rights include intan gible interests,s that their existence is a matter of legal definition, that the * Professor of Law, William S. Trish Bater 080207052 2 Abstract This thesis investigates the custom of white people blacking their faces and its continuation at a time when society is increasingly aware of accusations of racism. To provide a context, an overview of the long history of black people in England is offered, and issues about black stereotypes, including how ‘blackness’ has been perceived and represented, are considered. The historical use of blackface in England in various situations, including entertainment, social disorder, and tradition, is described in some detail. It is found that nowadays the practice has largely been rejected, but continues in folk activities, notably in some dance styles and in the performance of traditional (folk) drama. Research conducted through participant observation, interview, case study, and examination of web-based resources, drawing on my long familiarity with the folk world, found that participants overwhelmingly believe that blackface is a part of the tradition they are following and is connected to its past use as a disguise. However, although all are aware of the sensitivity of the subject, some performers are fiercely defensive of blackface, while others now question its application and amend their ‘disguise’ in different ways. -

In this Comment, I posit that ABC’s hit show “How to Get Away with Murder” over relies on traditional negative stereotypes about Black women. Annalise Keating, the show’s lead character, conforms to the stereotypes of the Jezebel, the Mammy, and the Angry Black Woman. Fur- ther, Keating’s representation as a Black female attorney is uniquely significant because historically Black women have done very little lawyering on the television screen. Thus, Keating’s representation as a Black female attorney on a show that has garnered upwards of twenty million viewers in a single episode is extremely influential, as it can have the effect of shaping audiences’ perceptions about Black women in the legal profession. As a result, I argue that the show’s negative depic- tion of Keating as a Black female attorney can lead to the formation of implicit biases about Black female attorneys, and may contribute to why Black women are having a difficult time excelling in law firms, which are 92.75 percent White. -

Reconhecendo estereótipos racistas na mídia norte- americana, por Suzane Jardim (Medium, 15/07/2016) Já faz tempo que acompanho alguns debates nessa rede mundial de computadores e sempre surgem muitas dúvidas quanto a estereótipos e ofensas racistas vindas geralmente dos EUA e que não fazem parte do cotidiano brasileiro — pelo menos não quanto ao uso corrente. Acredito na importância de saber reconhecer esses estereótipos, principalmente para compreender polêmicas internacionais e ter a capacidade de criticar as obras midiáticas americanizadas que consumimos no nosso dia-a-dia. Por isso, eu e o meu consultor de língua inglesa e cultura midiática americana, Francisco Izzo, fizemos uma pesquisinha básica em sites e artigos norte-americanos para tentar falar um pouco de alguns desses estereótipos — de um modo bem didático, simplificado e informal. Esse texto foi feito originalmente como um álbum no Facebook. A intenção era de popularizar a discussão e criar um dialogo em linguagem simples e fácil. Falta muita coisa provavelmente e talvez novos termos possam sem acrescentados aqui com o tempo. Se tiverem sugestões de termos a serem pesquisados, só jogar aí que nas horas de folgas a gente vê o que dá pra fazer. Nota: esse artigo informal foi feito com pesquisa de fato, sabe? Não com uma pesquisa bibliográfica. Fomos atrás de termos vistos em filmes, séries e em alguns artigos em inglês mais informais que liamos pela internet. Basicamente o que fizemos foi procurar fóruns, discussões e textos em blogs americanos pra ver o sentido que davam a cada termo e as explicações históricas que apareciam. Esses estereótipos se dividem entre Históricos e Modernos e tentamos à medida do possível indicar origens e datas, só faltando quando não foi possível encontrar, logo, contribuições são bem vindas. -

THE TRUTH BEHIND “ANGRY” BLACK WOMEN AND THEIR LEGAL INVISIBILITY AS VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Amber Simmons “When I say I am a Black feminist, I mean I recognize that my power as well as my primary oppressions come as a result of my Blackness as well as my womanness, and therefore my struggles on both of these fronts are inseparable.”1 — Audre Lorde, Self-described Black feminist, lesbian, poet, mother, warrior INTRODUCTION Janay Palmer and Ray Rice met in typical American fashion, at a movie theater in their hometown of New Rochelle, New York at fourteen and fifteen years old, respectively.2 They became immediate friends, until summer 2007 when the friendship escalated into a relationship.3 By May 2012, Ray and Janay were engaged and expecting their first child.4 They had normal relationship disagreements, until one night in Atlantic City.5 On February 1, 2014, a surveillance camera video surfaced of Ray punching Janay unconscious in the elevator of an Atlantic City, New Jersey casino.6 That night, both Ray and Janay were both arrested.7 Ray was charged with third-degree aggravated assault and, shortly thereafter, was terminated from the Baltimore Ravens.8 Ray never went to trial for 1. Green B.A., University of Cincinnati, 2009 M.A. University of Cincinnati, 2012 Dissertation Chair: Erynn Casanova Committee Members: Jennifer Malat Annulla Linders June 2018 Abstract Colorblind theory argues that racism has not subsided but has taken on a new form which appears nonracial and is hard to detect. Music videos are one form of popular culture that utilizes cross-racial or cultural images which appear to be racially inclusive, but when closely analyzed are firmly rooted in traditional stereotypes and take cultural expressions out of their proper sociohistorical contexts. This process is called cultural appropriation. Too often, researchers have determined what modes of appropriation are or are not harmful to various groups without any input from those groups. In this study I provide a space for racial groups whose creations or expressions are habitually appropriated to tell us which modes of appropriation they consider to be harmful. I use a dual qualitative method—music video content analysis and focus group interviews with 61 participants—to investigate representations of nonwhite cultures and how audiences of color interpret the use of their cultures within popular music
