Mike Stegall - Chairman Community First Bank Lilly Endowment Bob Hingst - Secretary/Treasurer Mid-America Beverage Community Scholarships Rick Smith - Past Chairman Smith Financial The Community Foundation of Howard County is pleased to honor the recipients Bill Beard of the 2010 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. Thanks to the generosity of Lilly Clinton County Endowment, two Howard County students will receive full-tuition scholarships, required fees, Nanette Bowling and a special allocation of up to $800 per year for required books and equipment for four Community Volunteer years of undergraduate study at any public or private college or university. The Ted Cripe recipients are Shelby Beasley and Stephen Chou. Clinton County Dana Davis Shelby Beasley, daughter of Charles and Pamela Beasley, is a 2010 graduate of Community Volunteer Eastern High School. Shelby plans to study psychology at DePauw University. When asked Brent Dechert her reaction to winning the scholarship Shelby said, "I was elated. I nearly had an aneurysm, United Way Chairman I was so excited. The first words out of my mouth were praise God. I ran down the stairs John Fell Jr. and hugged my mom and said that college McIntyre, Hilligoss, Vent & Welke was paid for." McCann Legal Jim McIntyre Stephen Chou, son of Thomas McIntyre, Hilligoss, Vent & Welke and Nellie Chou, is a 2010 graduate of Tyler Moore Northwestern High School. He will be Moore Title & Escrow, Inc. attending Taylor University studying 2010 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars Kent Ryan mathematics education. Jeff Smeltzer Cone Palace This is the thirteenth year that the Endowment has funded the Lilly Endowment J. D. Young Community Scholars program for outstanding students in Indiana. The Community Young's Water Conditioning Foundation defined the criteria based on the Endowment’s stated goal to "raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana." The criteria used in the selection process included: academic achievement, financial need, potential for success, preference for first-generation Community Foundation of Howard County college attendees, school, community, and work activities. The Community Foundation of Howard County has awarded approximately $365,000 in scholarships for the 2010-11 school year, including the two Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships.

The Carl Anderson Scholarship Fund was established by the family and friends of Carl Anderson in honor of his retirement from Delphi Delco Electronics. The scholarship supports students who are studying to be teachers. The recipient of the award is Amber Hudson, daughter of Mark and Daphne Hudson. Amber is a graduate of Western High School and plans to attend Huntington University to study social studies education and Amber Hudson, left, Carl Anderson Scholarship social work. recipient, and Glenn Grundmann. The Kathie Beatty Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Kathie Beatty to recognize students graduating from Western High School who are or will be attending either Purdue University at Kokomo or West Lafayette, or Indiana University- Kokomo. The recipient of the award is Benjamin Irwin. Benjamin is the son of James and Christine Irwin. He plans to attend Purdue University this fall to study accounting and finance.

The Jenny Michelle Butler Memorial Fund was established by Jerry and Marty Butler in memory of their daughter Jenny Michelle Butler. This fund provides scholarships to Darlene Homkes, left, and Rick Homkes, right, students who are members of First Presbyterian Church. The recipients are Nathan with Benjamin Irwin, recipient of the Kathie Lyons and Aaron Van Auken. Nathan is the son of Mark and Jennifer Lyons. He Beatty Memorial Scholarship. is a graduate of Western High School and plans to attend Purdue University to study economics. Aaron is the son of Jerry and Robin Van Auken. He is a graduate of Western High School and will be attending Ball State University this fall to study telecommunications.

Emily Hoeksema, left, and Larissa Lange, The M. Joyce Cook Memorial Scholarship was established in 2010 in memory of Joyce right, recipients of the M. Joyce Cook Cook who was known for her dedication to teaching. This fund provides scholarships to Memorial Scholarship, and Jerry Cook. Howard County students who are accepted into a program leading to a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, ministry or the mission field. The recipients are Northwestern High School graduates Emily Hoeksema and Larissa Lange. Emily is the daughter of Curt and Vivian Hoeksema. She will attend Taylor University to study elementary education. Larissa is the daughter of Steve and LeAnn Lange. She plans to attend Indiana University-Kokomo to study psychology.

The Richard Crosser Memorial Scholarship for Taylor and Kokomo Schools Fund was established by Crossman Communities. The scholarships are for students who will be pursuing a degree in structural engineering, architecture, building trades, real estate, John Fantuzzo, left, and Casey Shipley, drafting, business, finance, accounting, or some other field related to building trades. The Jesse W. Dunn Total Effort Award honors Jesse Dunn and was established by family and friends upon his retirement from Kokomo Gas and Fuel. This fund provides scholarships for Kokomo High School graduates who have participated in any sport or sports at the high school. The recipient is Jordan Broomfield, daughter of Jesse and Julie Broomfield. Jordan plans to attend the University of Indianapolis to study physical therapy. Erik Pattison, son of Bob and Kerri Pattison, is continuing his education at the Indiana University School of Medicine and will begin his fourth year of medical school in the fall.

The Richard L. and Marion J. Eller Scholarship was established by Richard and Marion Eller in 2006. Scholarships are awarded to students of Clay, Ervin and Howard townships with preference given to students pursuing a degree in agricultural-related studies. The recipient is Andrew Hunkeler. Andrew is the son of Hugh and Cynthia Hunkeler and is a Northwestern High school graduate. He will be attending Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to study mechanical engineering. Receiving a renewable scholarship is Erick Left to right, Andrew Hunkeler, Shayne Riley and Erick Miller, recipients of the Miller. Erick is the son of Rick and Barbara Miller. He is a second-time recipient and is Richard L. and Marion J. Eller Scholarship, attending Ivy Tech Community College studying agricultural business management. He is a third-time recipient and will be a junior at Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis where he is studying mechanical engineering.

The Tony Gabriel Student Athlete Scholarship was established by the family and friends of the late Tony Gabriel in recognition of his goal to help and mentor the youth of the Howard County community. This scholarship is provided to Taylor High School students who exemplify the characteristics of a top student-athlete. The recipients are Austen Conwell and Seth Vautaw. Austen is the son of Michael Conwell and Brenda Garibaldi and will be attending Anderson University to study kinesiology/sports medicine. Seth is son of Keith Vautaw and Sherrie Alexander. The W.G. Harter Memorial Scholarship was established this year by Bill Harter to honor his father who had been president and chairman of the board of Continental Steel. This scholarship is for Kokomo High School students who are accepted into a program leading to a bachelor’s degree in engineering at an accredited college or university in Indiana. The Gerald Hood Memorial Scholarship was established by Trudy Hood in memory of her husband Gerald Hood, who was a math teacher at Northwestern High School. Scholarships are awarded to students graduating from Northwestern High School. The recipient is Michael Heilman, center, C.V. The William S. & Susannah B. Hough Scholarship was established by Sue Hough to provide scholarships for Howard County students who are or will be attending Indiana University-Kokomo, Purdue University-Kokomo, or Ivy Tech Community College-Kokomo. The recipients include: Hayley Crawford, daughter of Doug Crawford and Gail Crawford, is a graduate of Eastern High School. Hayley will be attending Indiana University-Kokomo where she will study nursing. Mitzie Johnson is a junior at Indiana University-Kokomo studying accounting. David Brinkley, son of James and Tammy Brinkley, is a sophomore at Indiana University-Kokomo studying nursing. The Kokomo High School Class of 1964 Scholarship was established by the 1964 graduating class from Kokomo High School for Kokomo High School students. This year’s recipient is Eric Evans, the son of Sarah Elliott and Kenneth Evans. Eric plans to attend Indiana University to study nursing.

The recipient is Alexis Ungerer the daughter of Brian and Karen Ungerer. Alexis is a graduate of Kokomo High School and will be attending Ball State University to study nursing. Pagel in memory of his wife to provide scholarships for Western High School or Tri-Central High School students who are attending any accredited college or university in Indiana. The recipients are Elizabeth Clark and Amber Hudson. Elizabeth, daughter of Robert and Lisa Clark, is a graduate of Tri-Central High School. She plans to attend Butler University to pursue a pharmacy degree. Amber, daughter of Mark and Daphne Hudson, is a graduate of Western High School. She will be attending Huntington University and plans to study social studies education and social work.

The Western Women’s Scholarship was established by Jim Swisshelm to provide scholarships to qualified female students graduating from Western High School. The recipient is Brooke Lewis, daughter of Dave and Lisa Lewis. Brooke is a third-time recipient of this award and will be a junior at Indiana University-Kokomo studying elementary education.

The Frederick E. Wideman, M.D. Taylor Student Athlete Scholarship was established by Mary Jo Wideman in memory of her husband, Dr. Frederick Wideman, to provide scholarships to Taylor High School students who have participated in any varsity sport for two or more years.
