Thanks to the generosity of Lilly Clinton County Endowment, two Howard County students will receive full-tuition scholarships, required fees, Nanette Bowling and a special allocation of up to $800 per year for required books and equipment for four Community Volunteer years of undergraduate study at any Indiana public or private college or university. The Ted Cripe recipients are Shelby Beasley and Stephen Chou. Clinton County Dana Davis Shelby Beasley, daughter of Charles and Pamela Beasley, is a 2010 graduate of Community Volunteer Eastern High School. Shelby plans to study psychology at DePauw University. When asked Brent Dechert her reaction to winning the scholarship Shelby said, "I was elated. I nearly had an aneurysm, United Way Chairman I was so excited. The first words out of my mouth were praise God. I ran down the stairs John Fell Jr. and hugged my mom and said that college McIntyre, Hilligoss, Vent & Welke was paid for." While at Eastern High School, Derek Fisher Shelby was first chair violin in orchestra and Carroll County captain of the Academic Bowl Team. She Betsy Hoshaw also participated in Spell Bowl, youth group, Community Volunteer Spanish Club and was on the Robotics Team. Brad Howell Shelby is a member of the Eastern Academic Brad Howell Ford Hall of Fame, is an academic honor student and Scott McClelland a Trig Star winner. McCann Legal Jim McIntyre Stephen Chou, son of Thomas McIntyre, Hilligoss, Vent & Welke and Nellie Chou, is a 2010 graduate of Tyler Moore Northwestern High School. He will be Moore Title & Escrow, Inc. attending Taylor University studying 2010 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars Kent Ryan mathematics education. "When I opened the envelope and saw my name, I was speechless and almost Coca-Cola Bottling Co. dropped the letter," he said. While at Northwestern High School, Stephen was a member of Drama Club, Concert Duke Energy Choir, Student Council, National Honor Society, Science Club and the International Thespian Dr. Marilyn Skinner Society. He also participated in track, wrestling, tennis, swimming and diving. While Center for Early Childhood Education participating in Boy Scouts, Stephen achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. Jeff Smeltzer Cone Palace This is the thirteenth year that the Endowment has funded the Lilly Endowment J. D. Young Community Scholars program for outstanding students in Indiana. The Community Young's Water Conditioning Foundation defined the criteria based on the Endowment’s stated goal to "raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana." The criteria used in the selection process included: academic achievement, financial need, potential for success, preference for first-generation COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF HOWARD COUNTY college attendees, school, community, and work activities. The Community Foundation of Howard County has awarded approximately $365,000 in scholarships for the 2010-11 school year, including the two Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships. The Carl Anderson Scholarship Fund was established by the family and friends of Carl Anderson in honor of his retirement from Delphi Delco Electronics. The scholarship supports students who are studying to be teachers. The recipient of the award is Amber Hudson, daughter of Mark and Daphne Hudson. The Kathie Beatty Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Kathie Beatty to recognize students graduating from Western High School who are or will be attending either Purdue University at Kokomo or West Lafayette, or Indiana University- Kokomo. The recipient of the award is Benjamin Irwin. Benjamin is the son of James and Christine Irwin. He plans to attend Purdue University this fall to study accounting and finance. The Jenny Michelle Butler Memorial Fund was established by Jerry and Marty Butler in memory of their daughter Jenny Michelle Butler. This fund provides scholarships to Darlene Homkes, left, and Rick Homkes, right, students who are members of First Presbyterian Church. The recipients are Nathan with Benjamin Irwin, recipient of the Kathie Lyons and Aaron Van Auken. Nathan is the son of Mark and Jennifer Lyons. He Beatty Memorial Scholarship. is a graduate of Western High School and plans to attend Purdue University to study economics. Aaron is the son of Jerry and Robin Van Auken. He is a graduate of Western High School and will be attending Ball State University this fall to study telecommunications. The Community Foundation of Howard County Scholars are the finalists in the competition for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships. Madeline Cassidy, daughter of Laura Cassidy and Steve Cassidy, is a graduate of Kokomo High School. She will be attending Butler University studying sports nutrition. Mitchel Hill, son of Gregory and Vicki Hill, is a graduate of Western High School. Casey Shipley, son of Leslie Beck and Tim Shipley, is a graduate of Kokomo High School. He will be attending Wabash College pursuing a degree in business. Emily Hoeksema, left, and Larissa Lange, The M. Joyce Cook Memorial Scholarship was established in 2010 in memory of Joyce right, recipients of the M. Joyce Cook Cook who was known for her dedication to teaching. This fund provides scholarships to Memorial Scholarship, and Jerry Cook. Howard County students who are accepted into a program leading to a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, ministry or the mission field. The recipients are Northwestern High School graduates Emily Hoeksema and Larissa Lange. Emily is the daughter of Curt and Vivian Hoeksema. She will attend Taylor University to study elementary education. Larissa is the daughter of Steve and LeAnn Lange. She plans to attend Indiana University-Kokomo to study psychology. The Richard Crosser Memorial Scholarship for Taylor and Kokomo Schools Fund was established by Crossman Communities. The scholarships are for students who will be pursuing a degree in structural engineering, architecture, building trades, real estate, John Fantuzzo, left, and Casey Shipley, drafting, business, finance, accounting, or some other field related to building trades. Dunn Total Effort Award honors Jesse Dunn and was established by family and friends upon his retirement from Kokomo Gas and Fuel. This fund provides scholarships for Kokomo High School graduates who have participated in any sport or sports at the high school. The recipient is Jordan Broomfield, daughter of Jesse and Julie Broomfield. Jordan plans to attend the University of Indianapolis to study physical therapy.
