Summer 2008 2008 BOARD MEMBERS Rick Smith - Chair LILLY ENDOWMENT Smith Financial Corporation COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIPS Bob Hingst - Secretary/Treasurer Mid-America Beverage The Community Foundation of Howard County is pleased to honor the recipients of the 2008 Rex Gingerich - Past Chair Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. Thanks to the generosity of Lilly Endowment, two Howard H.E. McGonigal, Inc. County students will receive full-tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $800 per year Pam Beckom for required books and equipment for four years of undergraduate study at any Indiana public or private Pizza Hut college or university. The recipients are Blaire Bell and Sean Sullivan. Nanette Bowling Community Volunteer Blaire Bell is the daughter of Kim Bell and Scott Bell and is a 2008 graduate of Northwestern Darcy Burthay High School. Blaire will be attending Butler University in the fall where she will study pharmacol- St. Joseph Hospital ogy. When asked how she felt when she learned she had been selected as a Lilly Endowment Scholar, Ted Cripe Blaire responded, "I realized going into the interview that all of the candidates were equally deserving Clinton County of this prestigious award. I feel honored to have received this scholarship and am so thankful for this Dana Davis wonderful opportunity." Prior to being awarded the Community Volunteer scholarship, Blaire was unsure if she could pay for John Fell Jr. six years of post-secondary schooling at Butler. She McIntyre, Hilligoss, & Welke says that the scholarship "makes a huge difference." Bob Hayes Blaire was the co-captain of the volleyball team, Delphi Delco captain of the softball team, a member of student Betsy Hoshaw council, the secretary of the Sunshine Society, and a Community Volunteer member of S.A.D.D. Brad Howell Brad Howell Ford Sean Sullivan is the son of Kathleen Sullivan and is a 2008 graduate of Kokomo Alan Jackson Carroll County High School. In the fall, Sean will attend Butler University, where he plans to study business. When Tyler Moore asked how he felt when he learned that he had been Moore Title & Escrow, Inc. 2008 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars selected as a Lilly Endowment Scholar, Sean stated Dottye Robeson Blaire Bell and Sean Sullivan Carroll County that his first reaction was "shock and disbelief." He claims that it is a blessing and the "silver lining" to the school year that has seen him spend months in Kent Ryan Clinton County rehabilitation for a knee injury. Sean graduated at the top of his class at KHS and was involved in a number of extra-curricular activities, including: National Honor Society, Student Council, speech and Laura Sheets Duke Energy debate teams, school newspaper, soccer and track teams, Rotary Interact, and a D.A.R.E. role model. After completing his undergraduate degree, Sean wants to attend law school. Eventually, he would like Dr. Marilyn Skinner Community Volunteer to follow in the steps of his great-uncle, a state senator from North Carolina, and run for state senate. Mike Stegall Community First Bank This is the eleventh year that the Endowment has funded the Lilly Endowment Community Scholars program for outstanding students in Indiana. The Community Foundation defined the criteria J.D. Carl Anderson Scholarship Fund was established by the family and friends of Mr. Anderson in honor of his retirement from Delphi Delco Electronics. The scholarships support students who are studying to be teachers. The recipient of the award is Sarah Lechner, daughter of Steven and Laura Lechner. Sarah is a 2008 graduate of Kokomo High School and will be a freshman at Indiana Karisa Burkholder University Kokomo studying education. Sarah Lechner (middle) receives the Community Foundation Scholar Carl Anderson Scholarship Kathie Beatty Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in memory of the late Kathie Beatty to recognize students graduat- ing from Western High School who are or will be attending either Purdue University of Technology at Kokomo, Purdue University West Lafayette, or Indiana University Kokomo. The recipient of the award is Sarah Hulet, daughter of Janice Hulet. Sarah is a 2008 graduate and will be attending Purdue University in the fall to pursue a degree in psychology. Joseph Fleenor Jr. Sarah Hulet (middle) receives the Kathie Community Foundation Scholar Beatty Memorial Scholarship Alex and Kitty Bell Scholarship was established by Kathryn (Kitty) Bell. The fund provides scholarships to students graduating from Kokomo High School who participated in minor sports or cheerleading while a student at Kokomo High School and will be pursuing post-secondary education. The 2008 recipient of this renewable award is Kate Goodnight, daughter of Michael and Patricia Goodnight. Kate is a third-time recipient, a 2006 Kokomo High School graduate and is attending Purdue University majoring in accounting. Jenny Michelle Butler Scholarship Fund was established by Jerry and Marty Butler, in memory of their daughter Jenny Michelle Butler. This fund provides scholarships to students who are members Clinton Koon of First Presbyterian Church and are enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution with the Kokomo Country Club Scholarship intent to earn a degree. The 2008 recipient of this award is Katherine McCallin, daughter of Joshua and Moira McCallin. Kaitlin is a 2008 graduate of Northwestern High School and will attend Purdue University to study pharmacology. Community Foundation of Howard County Scholars are the finalists in the competition for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships. The following are the awardees for 2008: Abby Altman, daughter of Sarah Cotton is a 2008 graduate of Eastern High School and will attend St. Mary’s College in the fall. Karissa Burkholder, daughter of Kris and Kenny Burkholder is a 2008 graduate of Eastern High School and will attend Indiana Wesleyan University to study biology and pre-optometry. Laura Roseberry Kokomo Country Club Scholarship Joseph Fleenor, son of Winnie Lawson and Joseph Fleenor Sr. is a 2008 graduate of Taylor High { page 2 } School and will attend Wabash College to study chemistry and pre-medical studies. Nida Zia, Recipients Announced daughter of Malik Zia and Tahira Ameen is a 2008 graduate of Kokomo High school and will attend Indiana University to study political science. Zachary Gibson KHS Class of 1964 Scholarship Jesse W. Dunn Total Effort Award honors Jesse Dunn and was established by family and friends upon his retirement from Kokomo Gas and Fuel. It provides scholarships for Kokomo High School graduates who have participated in any sport or sports at the high school. This year’s recipient is Mashilah Powell, granddaughter of George and Mary Powell. Mashilah is a 2008 graduate and will Mashilah Powell (middle) receives the Jesse W. Earl Memorial Scholarship was established by the late physician’s family to provide support Emma Ferrell to medical students from Howard County who are studying at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Kathy A. Name Memorial Scholarship Erik Pattison, son of Bob and Kerri Pattison, is the 2008 recipient of this award. He is continuing his education at the Indiana University School of Medicine and will begin his second year in the fall. Richard L. and Marion J. Eller Scholarship was established by Richard and Marion Eller in 2006. The scholarships are awarded to qualified students of Clay, Ervin, and Howard townships planning to attend a post-secondary institution in Indiana, with preference given to students pursuing a degree in agricultural-related stud- Cameron Bannon ies. The 2008 recipient of the award is Shayne Riley, son of Troy Turnaround Scholarship and Michelle Riley. Shayne is a 2008 graduate of Northwestern Shayne Riley (middle) receives the Richard High School and will be a freshman at Purdue University studying L. and Marion J. Eller Scholarship mechanical engineering in the fall. Tony Gabriel Student Athlete Scholarship was established by the family and friends of the late Tony Gabriel in recognition of his goal to help and mentor the youth of the Howard County community. This scholarship is provided to qualified graduates of Taylor High School who exemplify the characteristics of a top student-athlete. The recipients of the award are James Tyler Gotshall, son of Terry and Janet Gotshall, and Shawn Petty, son of Robert and Yvonne Petty.
