President’s Message Dear Members and Associates,

It’s my honor and privilege to serve with Victoria Davis as Co-President of the 2015 Malibu Bel Air Republican Women’s Federated. I’m delighted to join the team and work alongside a wonderful group of conservative woman. Growing up in Malibu I didn’t know you existed.

A big THANK YOU to Lorelei Harges for hosting this year’s Potluck Christmas Party. It was an outstanding event and we collected a bounty of toys for “Toys for Tots.” Retiring presidents, Marta Enstrom and Rosemarie Ihde were honored for their year(s) of service. They each gave selflessly of their time and expertise. We are also thankful to retiring Ways & Means Chairperson, Sally Zamarin.

While these ladies will be spending more time with family & friends, they are not saying good-bye and will continue to be actively involved with the MBA-RWF.

Guest speaker (and hubby), Attorney Bill Becker, gave us an update on the status of his lawsuit against the City of Santa Monica. Bill is representing the Santa Monica Nativity Committee’s lawsuit against the City of Santa Monica for banning the annual Christmas Nativity Display, which has been a tradition for the last 62 years. A three judge panel of the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments, Friday, February 6th, 2015.

The County Republican Women’s Federated “kicked off” 2015 with a Leadership Conference, January 17th. The event held workshops on membership, election integrity, community outreach, mentoring, and more. Assemblywoman Shannon Grove of Bakersfield as keynote speaker was outstanding. We hope you will join for next year’s conference.

We believe there are great opportunities this year to make a difference both locally and nationwide.

It’s crucial that Republicans work together this year as we fight to hold the House & Senate and to take back the White House.

We are committed to educate and inform club members. Going forward, we will continue to reach out to local college & university Republican clubs, host Republican candidates to promote their election (Los Angeles has an upcoming election), provide interesting speakers at club events and reaching out to the public, by registering them to vote and encouraging them on election day(s).

Please join our team. If you have a desire to participate on any of the committees, now is a great time to volunteer. This is the year to make a difference in California politics!

Membership News Dear Friends,

Many thanks to everyone who has joined or renewed their 2015 membership. If you haven't yet done so, please mail a check to our post office box or use PayPal via our web site. While you're at it, please also make sure your contact information and preferences are up-to-date for the directory, e-mail and telephone communication.

A lot is at stake this year, with the 2016 presidential election on the horizon. As a party, we need to regroup, refresh and respond strategically to the problems we face. It's easy to be discouraged and give up; it takes courage to make a difference. For a while, I had a bumper sticker on my station wagon: I REJECT THE PREMISE. Not only was it a good conversation opener, it was a wonderful reminder not to accept the templates laid out for us by others. Who says we have to accept the assumptions embedded in the question? One of those premises we should be rejecting is that Republicans in California are through. The Senate race for Boxer's seat could be a case in point. The state's nonpartisan primary law creates a situation where several Democrats likely will fragment enough votes to create a Republican spot on the November ballot. This year, I would like to challenge each of you to invite at least one prospective member to at least one of our events. We need to increase our membership and rebuild our party. Coming together as a group gives us new opportunities to educate ourselves on important topical issues, share ideas, compare notes and learn creative ways to reach others. Courage, Laura Borda Membership Vice President (310) 589-0850 [email protected]

FEBRUARY BOOK RECOMMENDATION by Dr. Laura Trice

Do you enjoy a really good story by an excellent writer? Here are five great stories in one book. A Lineage of Grace: Five Stories of Unlikely Women Who Changed Eternity by Francine Rivers. Rivers selects five women from the Bible and tells their stories in a way that teaches you about the time period and brings these five women to life. It is a combination of historical fiction yet you can picture these characters living today. I found myself empathizing with and caring about these ladies and rooting for them. The book is does not sugarcoat harshness but is also written tastefully with a gentle tone.

Tamar was a young 14-year-old girl forced to marry into a different culture with a cruel husband and unsympathetic family who blamed her for everything that went wrong. She refused to give up hope and ended up both publicly redeemed and personally blessed. Rahab was forced into a lifestyle she didn’t want but, through bravery and courage, took a huge leap of faith and got a second chance. Naomi and Ruth traveled alone, took risks and chances and their story will have you on the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next? Bathsheba and Mary are the last two women featured.

This book is inspiring for any woman facing an adversity or challenge in her life and for women who enjoy learning about what life was like in the past. Some of these stories have romance, others have the joys of motherhood and all have adventures with twists and turns. A relaxing book to read on weekends and vacation and a terrific gift for a daughter, friend or mother.

YOUNG AMERICA’S FOUNDATION A brief commentary provided by Laura Borda

I wanted to make a plug for the Young America's Foundation. Their conferences in Santa Barbara have been transformational for my boys. If you know any high school or college kids, please direct them to www.yaf.org. Their heavily subsidized conferences are amazing. They include a tour of the Reagan Rancho del Cielo (which otherwise is practically impossible to see), along with all kinds of speakers who talk about free enterprise and conservative principles in a classroom settling. What I've especially appreciated are the friendships they've formed with like-minded kids from other parts of the country. Especially valuable when you're raising children in So Cal. Julian is attending the Road to Freedom Seminar May 28-30 (for college students) and Sebastian is attending the High School Conference at the Reagan Ranch March 19-21.

Obituary for Malibu/Bel-Air Republican Women Federated Diamond Member Jacqueline Hazard Bridgeman

Longtime resident, Dolphin Award winner and Malibu Stage Company co-founder Jacqueline Bridgeman passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

She, along with accomplished playwright Charles Marowitz, founded the Malibu Stage Company in 1990. Bridgeman served as the Stage Company’s president emeritus until leaving in 2008 after 18 years at the helm. Bridgeman was instrumental in funding and helping the Stage Company — later the Malibu Playhouse — obtain its current 99-seat theater. She was a benefactor to Malibu Urgent Care and “very generous” with her Hazard Ranch home, allowing many community members to gather there in times of need. “She was very civic-minded,” said Anne Payne, a neighbor and friend of Bridgeman’s.
