Conservative Youth inspired for the future at Reagan Ranch Laura borda, Mba/RWF treasurer

Taking President ’s words to heart, we recently signed up our teenage sons for a Young America’s Foundation conference in Santa Barbara. Little did I know what a transformative experience it would be for the whole family.

The Herndon, Va.-based Young America’s Foundation works to pass on conservative principles to today’s high school and college students through seminars, leadership conferences, lecture programs and campus activism resources. It runs an internship program in Washington, D.C. through the National Journalism Center. Its broader mission is to “ensure that increasing numbers of young Americans understand and are inspired by the ideas of , free enterprise, a strong national defense and traditional values.”

In 1998 the foundation acquired Rancho del Cielo—Reagan’s western White House—and in 2001 opened the Reagan Ranch Center in downtown Santa Barbara. The Reagan Ranch High School Conference runs a “schoolhouse for Reaganism” to hone students’ knowledge of conservative principles and to learn debate arguments and tactics. The idea is to equip young conservatives with what they need to challenge the prevailing liberal orthodoxy on their school campuses.

The weekend’s events began with a surprise. Each of the 60 or so students attending had to introduce themselves at a banquet for parents and other dignitaries, and say why they are conservative. What they said on the spot was tremendously varied, articulate and inspiring. It set a wonderful and uplifting tone for the conference. The rest of the conference included speeches by former Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo, documentary filmmaker Ann McElhinney (and a screening of her movie FrackNation) and Cherylyn Harley LeBon, national co-chair of the Black Leadership Network.

Classroom topics included:

• What is the conservative movement? • Is freedom in our future? A time for choosing • Ronald Reagan: His life and character • America: Remember who you are • Is America still the land of opportunity? • The myth of the robber barons • Race in America today • New Deal or raw deal? Evaluating big government • How the Reagan model of activism can change your school Students also heard from representatives from conservative college campuses, saw a couple of movies, and browsed the center’s exhibits and bookstore.

The highlight of the conference was a tour of the Reagan ranch. Normally visits to the ranch are reserved for $1,000+ donors to the foundation. But a visit to the ranch is included as part of the conference to inspire the next generation of conservative leaders. Because of the foundation’s fundraising, the cost to parents for the conference was cost was $100, including hotel and meals. The real cost was $1,400.

More information on the foundation, its on-line resources and conference schedule can be found at www.yaf.org.

Michael walsh encourages republicans to fight like democrats

In March Michael Walsh encouraged a group of 30 MBA/RWF members and 10 guests including men to fight like Democrats using his Rules for Radical Conservatives: Beating the Left at Its Own Game to Take Back America a book published under his pseudonym David Kahane. Walsh challenged the audience to step down their fight, “Unless they fear you, you will lose.” Susanne and Robert Reyto graciously opened their Westwood home to host the event. Third place runoff finisher Kevin James also shared some surprising facts on the LA Mayoral race. According to , If 29% of registered republicans in LA had voted then

Kevin James would have come out first. Author Michael Walsh speaks to a group of 40 republican women and Instead, only 16% of republicans voted men packed into the Westwood home of MBA/RWF Co-President compared to 17% for democrats. Kevin James Susanne Reyto. Photo credit: Renata Ciuzausk-Markley won independents by 8 points to come out 3rd. Kevin endorsed Eric Garcetti. Interesting, all losing candidates have endorsed Eric Garcetti. Perhaps the most encouraging words came from the new MBARWF Publicity Chair Renata Ciuzausk-Markley who publicized the evening in the Malibu Patch: “I am more and more convinced, that we, the women, need to sit down, put all our God's given gifts and talents together, set some realistic goals, come up with strategies and act, OR we'll for ever remain the women who knew what was happening, and just talked about it and listened to the others do so....”

The story of the pledge CALENDAR of allegiance Ruth loeb and cindy Linke Americanism co-chairs

Our MBA/RWF meetings all begin beautifully - with a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance to the best flag in the world. Our Board nd thought you might like to know the history behind the Pledge. Here 42 Malibu Arts Festival is the fascinating story. July 27-28, 2013 NO PLEDGE FOR FIRST CENTURY For the first 116 years of our country, there was no Pledge. It No Meeting was written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister in Boston. August 2013 Bellamy, an official of the National Education Association, created the Pledge as part of a flag-raising ceremony to mark the 400th 9/11 Memorial Flag Set Up anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America. The original words Pepperdine University were: September, 2013 "I pledge allegiance to my flag, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and Bill Whittle justice for all." Political Commentator "MY FLAG" CHANGED TO "FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF October, 2013 AMERICA" It was first published September 8, 1892 in "Youth's TBA Companion," a popular family magazine. It was reprinted on leaflets November 2013 and distributed nationwide. On Columbus Day, October 12, 1892, 12 million school children recited the Pledge for the very first time. Christmas Luncheon From that day on, the Pledge of Allegiance was used by school December 2013 children to salute the flag. In 1924 the words "my flag" were changed to "the flag of the United States of America" at the insistance of the Your Ideas are Welcome American Legion and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Please let us know your suggestions School children first started out with their hand over their for programs, speakers, and venues. heart, then stretched their arm out and pointed on the words "to the flag." When we entered WWII, this practice was dropped because it Co-Program Vice Presidents looked too much like the "heil" Germans were giving to Hitler. Fran Pierce Jackson In 1942, Congress officially endorsed the Pledge of Allegiance and [email protected] the hand over the heart gesture. In 1954, Congress officially added Victoria Lee Davis [email protected] the words "under God." It was during the Eisenhower Administration and Ike signed it into law. There have been challenges to the Pledge by the usual liberal groups, and especially to the two words "under God." But patriots, like those in our great Republican Club, feel it is an affirmation of and gratitude for our values, our freedoms, and the American way of life. So, we love saying the Pledge of Allegiance and especially relish repeating the words "under God." The children in the kindergarten of Juan Cabrillo School in say the following before they recite the Pledge: "The thoughts of my mind, the work of my hands, the love of my heart, I give to my flag." Our Club is donating patriotic books about the Pledge of Allegiance, the flag, and the country, to our local schools. 7 4123
