Social Mobility – Recommendations from the Bridge Group 60 Annex A1. Guidance from the Bridge Group 62 Diversity and equal opportunities in television: In-focus report on the main five broadcasters 1. Introduction 1.1 This In-focus report provides more in-depth analysis across each of the main five broadcasters1 and should be read in conjunction with the main report. 1.2 Each section gives an overview of the six protected characteristics for which we collected data, showing profiles for all UK employees across each broadcaster. The top row (purple) shows profiles for gender, racial group and disability, for which data provision was mandatory. The bottom row (blue) shows profiles for age, sexual orientation and religion or belief, for which provision was voluntary. 1.3 Though broadcasters were not required to provide the information requested on a voluntary basis, we consider these to be equally important characteristics that should be monitored to effectively assess how well equal opportunities are being promoted across the industry. We made it clear in our information request that, to provide context and transparency, we would be publishing information on who did and didn’t provide the data requested. 1.4 -
Gatestone Institute
GATESTONE INSTITUTE IMPACT: Gatestone has published a steady stream of content aimed at stoking fears of a Muslim takeover of Europe and America. The articles warn that increasing Muslim migration to Europe will lead to the “Islamization” of the continent. Gatestone’s pieces have been cited by far-right politicians to justify their anti- Muslim policies. • Gatestone Institute was founded in 2008 under the name “Hudson New York” by Nina Rosenwald. In 2012, the organization briefly changed its name to “Stonegate Institute.” Later that year, the organization adopted its current name. Gatestone describes itself as an “international policy council and think tank.” The former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and current national security adviser to President Donald Trump, John Bolton, served as the Institute’s chairman since 2013. • Rosenwald is the heiress to the Sears Roebuck fortune. A 2011 report by the Center for American Progress found that since 2001, Rosenwald, through her family foundation, the William Rosenwald Family Fund, donated more than $2.8 million to “organizations that fan the flames of Islamophobia.” The Center for American Progress identified the family fund as one of the the top seven funders of Islamophobia. • A September 2017 article in The Intercept by investigative journalist Lee Fang found that Gatestone published articles “focused on stoking fears about immigrants and Muslims.” In another article from 2018, Fang noted Gatestone was “infamous for its role in publishing ‘fake news’ and spreading hate about Muslims.” Fang also found that Gatestone’s anti-Muslim content had been regularly promoted by politicians, including members and affiliated online groups, of the far-right German party, Alternative for Germany (AfD). -

Pegida and New Right-Wing Populism in Germany
NEW PERSPECTIVES IN GERMAN POLITICAL STUDIES PEGIDA AND NEW RIGHT-WING POPULISM IN GERMANY Hans Vorländer, Maik Herold, Steven Schäller New Perspectives in German Political Studies Series Editors William E. Paterson Aston University Birmingham, UK Thomas Saalfeld Universität Bamberg Bamberg, Germany Far reaching changes are now taking place in Germany. Stability lay at the core of the German model and much of the writing from Peter Katzenstein and Manfred Schmidt onwards sought to explain this enviable stability. Changes in the external environment have created a number of fundamen- tal challenges which pose a threat to that stability. Germany is now Europe’s central power but this has generated controversy about how it is to exercise this new power. Although attention is often centred on German power the migration crisis demonstrates its limits. New Perspectives in German Political Studies aims to engage with these new challenges and to cater for the heightened interest in Germany. The Editors would welcome proposals for single-authored monographs, edited collections and Pivots, from junior as well as well-established scholars working on contemporary German Politics. Progressive Foreign Policy Debrief Intel for Advocacy
Progressive Foreign Policy Debrief Intel for Advocacy TOPLINE TAKEAWAYS ● Trump’s War Cabinet is taking shape with John Bolton’s appointment as National Security Advisor. ● With Bolton on board, the world is counting on the Senate to block Trump’s War Cabinet by opposing Haspel and Pompeo. ● The Senate sent a strong bipartisan message to Saudi Arabia: Your war in Yemen must end. ● The Iraq war turned 15 this week. Have we learned nothing? IT’S TIME TO SOUND THE ALARM: TRUMP ROUNDS OUT WAR CABINET WITH JOHN BOLTON After weeks of speculation, Donald Trump finally asked John Bolton to be his National Security Advisor, revealing once and for all who he really is: a reckless and dangerous president bent on dragging the United States into more wars. Trump’s pick of Bolton is the latest in a long line of personnel decisions that all point in one direction, Donald Trump is assembling a war cabinet. Whether it is the ouster of pro-diplomacy voices like Rex Tillerson, the nominations of the hawkish Mike Pompeo and pro-torture Gina Haspel, and even the revoked nomination of Victor Cha over his opposition to Trump’s plan for preventative war with North Korea, these moves combine to paint a picture that diplomacy and the rule of law have no place in Donald Trump’s administration. Read our statement here, and share it on Twitter and Facebook. TOPLINE MESSAGES: Bolton is a dangerous warmonger who will only serve to reinforce Donald Trump’s worst impulses. ● Bolton has actively and openly pushed for war with Iran, North Korea, and Syria. -
European Elections in the UK Media Briefing 7Th May 2014 UKIP and the 2014 European Parliament Elections
European Elections in the UK Media Briefing 7th May 2014 UKIP and the 2014 European Parliament elections Dr Philip Lynch ([email protected]) & Dr Richard Whitaker ([email protected]) University of Leicester UKIP and the 2014 European Elections Philip Lynch ( [email protected], @drphiliplynch ) and Richard Whitaker ( [email protected], @rickwhitaker ) Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Leicester UKIP go into the 2014 European elections in a far stronger position than they did five years earlier. The crucial differences are first, that UKIP have not experienced the decline in support in general election polling that they normally do after a European election. On the contrary, they are now consistently placed in third position in polls of general election vote intentions. Second, their ratings in polls of European election vote intention are some ten points higher on average than they were in the run up to the 2009 contest for seats in the European Parliament (EP). Third, they have more than double the number of members and a much better, even if still small base in local councils having secured 147 seats in the 2013 local elections. Fourth, while they have benefitted in the past from Conservative supporters lending UKIP their vote, they are in an even better position to do so this time around given that the Tories are now in government. On top of that, if UKIP’s campaign to win even more support from working class voters is successful, they will make headway in areas where Labour are traditionally strong. The presence of the Liberal Democrats in government alongside the collapse of the BNP add to the auspicious conditions for UKIP in 2014.
