  • Civil Wars and the African Universities: the University of Ibadan Example, 1967–1970
Civil Wars and the African Universities: The University of Ibadan Example, 1967–1970 A. Adegboyega Adedire Abstract Civil war is not a new phenomenon in Africa. The Nigerian Civil War of 1967-1970 represents a dark past but provides an intriguing basis to develop a history that enables us to understand Nige- ria’s direction. It is against this backdrop that this paper examines the impact of the Nigerian Civil War on the educational decline in the University of Ibadan. While some effects were immediate, such as diminishing student admissions and enrollments, a decline in postgraduate studies, and the insecurity of lives and property, other long-term effects manifested themselves after the war include problems such as displaced families, ethnic chauvinism, and the reabsorption of the Easterners into the University community. This work relies heavily on primary sources, archival materials, newspa- pers, and secondary sources to make its case. Keywords: civil wars, universities, University of Ibadan, education War is one of the oldest human activities, so much so that in contemporary times nations of the world still devote enormous resources into the prosecution and preparation for it.1 A review of educational trends since the eighteenth century reveals a rela- tion between war and education.2 Thomas Goody has argued that war is an instrument of the national state, while education has been termed as an instrument of the national will.3 Provincial sat- isfaction with one’s nation and a smug belief in its superiority or underestimation as well as contempt for or hatred of others are often achieved through education.4 On the other hand, the accep- tance of war as a means of settling interstate conflicts, an arrogant “lick the enemy,” or “conquer the world” patriotism, and a docile readiness to obey commands when national leaders decide that the favorable moment for conflict has arrived are the various atti- tudes that have been developed in varying degrees by modern © 2018 A.

OPERATION AURE Page 1 of 67 OPERATION 'AURE’: The Northern Military Counter-Rebellion of July 1966 By Nowa Omoigui BACKGROUND In the early hours of January 15, 1966, citing a laundry list of complaints against the political class, there was a military rebellion in Nigeria against the first republic [http://www.dawodu.com/nzeogwu2.htm]. Led by a group of Majors who were predominantly of eastern origin, the Prime Minister, a federal minister, two regional premiers, along with top Army officers were brutally assassinated. A number of civilians were also killed. [http://www.gamji.com/NEWS1103.htm] The coup succeeded in Kaduna the northern region capital, failed in Lagos the federal capital and Ibadan the western regional capital, but barely took place in Benin the midwestern capital, and Enugu the eastern capital. The majority of those murdered were northerners, accompanied by some westerners and two Midwesterners. No easterner lost his or her life. On January 16, rather than approve the appointment of Zanna Bukar Dipcharima, a politician of northern origin, as acting Prime Minister, the acting President, Nwafor Orizu, himself of eastern origin, handed over power to Major-General JTU Aguiyi- Ironsi, the GOC of the Nigerian Army, also of eastern origin. This was allegedly at the behest of the rump cabinet, allegedly to enable Ironsi put down the revolt which, as of then, had already failed in southern Nigeria. Until it became apparent recently in separate testimony by Alhaji Shehu Shagari and Chief Richard Akinjide, it had always been publicly assumed in the lay Press that the hand-over was voluntary although unconstitutional - since no such provision existed in the Nigerian constitution.

The study examined the role of the OAU in mediating peace during Nigeria’s civil war of 1967 to 1970. Its basic objectives were to: document the various mediatory talks organised by the OAU during the conflict; identify the factors that spurred the OAU to mediate in the war and; analyse the factors that inhibited the success of OAU’s mediatory efforts to broker peace between the belligerent parties. Data for this paper was obtained from both primary and secondary sources including relevant books, journal articles, newspaper publications, archival materials and OAU resolutions. The research method adopted was content analysis of historical documents. The paper found out that the OAU’s mediatory intervention ended up as an exercise in futility. The organisation’s Charter’s prohibition of intervention in internal conflicts of member states; bias on the part of the mediators in favour of Nigeria, as well as mistrust and uncompromising stand of the belligerents, among others, accounted for this failure.

  • Political Assassinations in Nigeria: an Exploratory Study 1986-2005
African Journal of Political Science and International Relations Vol. 1 (1), pp. 009-019, May 2007 Available online at http://www.academicjournals.org/AJPSIR © 2007 Academic Journals Full Length Research Paper Political assassinations in Nigeria: an exploratory study 1986-2005 Afeaye Anthony Igbafe1 and O. J. Offiong2 1Igbafe, John Harris Library C/O David O. E., University of Benin, P.M.B. 1191, Benin city Edo State, Nigeria. 2Department of Political Science and Public Administration University of Benin, P.M.B. 1154, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. Accepted 30 April 2007 Political assassinations have been the major outcome of political violence in Nigeria. The activities and actions of political individuals and groups are now centered on ‘adoption of assassination’ in settling political scores. The paper examines the spate of political assassinations in the Nigerian political terrain from 1986 - 2005. The central focus is the continued killing of political actors, with the dismal effort of the security agencies, particularly the police; in bringing culprits to book and attribution of reported cases to armed robbery. Utilizing secondary data, the study reveals that approximately 53% of the deaths took place in the preceding decade (1991 - 2000), while 45% occurred in the present decade and 2% was recorded two decades ago. The paper observes with sadness, the inconclusive state of the various cases of political assassination. The ineffectiveness of the national security outfit, the intra-and inter-party squabbles and the ‘bloody’ political war that looms in some parts of the country are some of the factors that account for the rising incidence of political assassinations in Nigeria.

The spread, aptly suggest depth, steady rate of practice and the public acceptability of the works as objects of environmental beautification and commemoration. As rich as the art is in the practice and history, apart from isolated studies of few scholars on the subject, there is paucity of information on archetype and the geographical spread of the art which is constantly affected by poor management and devastating socio-political and religious crises, the study therefore became imperative now for a comprehensive art historical record of the nation’s nascent art. The study appraises the outdoor sculpture in Southwest of Nigeria briefly and focuses on the type and geographical spread in order to determine their provenance and document them vis-à-vis their respective locations. The study covers the period of the emergence of outdoor sculpture in Nigeria since 1900 up to 2005 when a decline in the art was noticed. Historically, the British overlord in 1914 saw forceful nuptials as a political necessity to safeguard and consolidate divergence ethnic pluralism, hypothesizing the dawn of ethnic consciousness in Nigerian political life. Ethnicity has been exploited as an instrument of oppression, therefore, becomes a time bomb lingering to explode in Nigerian political landscape. Military intervention in politics as an extra-legal and conspiratorial subjugation of government has been conventionally reprimanded as an aberration, despite their forbidden operational values in political engagements, various countries of the world such as Nigeria, France, Ghana, Uganda, Sudan, Somalia, Tanzania, Thailand, Iraq, Libya, Algeria, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Russia, just to mention a few, have experienced military skyjacking of political power at one time or the other, therefore, this paper, discusses how ethnicity influences military takeover and civil war in Nigeria. Methodology espoused in carrying out this study was heavily derived from both secondary sources and insightful empirical observation of military trends in Nigeria.
