EDITORIAL 123 the term "specific" may be applied. Mani claims to this title have been put forward in the past 'but further experience has not confirmed these assertions. '1 he new form of treatment with diphtheria Formol-Toxoid recounted in the paper by Collier and McKean is descnb ed modestly and without making any ambitious claims. Fallacies are common in estimating the value of any treatment in leprosy. Signs of clinicaI improvement are particularly unreliable, and even clearing up of positive bacteriological findings may be dependent on seasonal and other temporary causes. Time must therefore be given to assess these various factors before judgment is passed. Already arrangements are being made in several different centres throughout the world to test out this treatment. We trust that the eperience of others will confirm the results of the workers in Siam. Of almost equal interest are the animal inoculation experiments described in another paper. The fact that leprosy, unlike tuber culosis, is confined to the human race has limited our knowledge and handicapped our attempts at treatment and control. If these therapeutic and experimental results are substantiated they may have far-reaching results not only in leprosy but also possibly in other diseases. Reference is made on page 158 to the foundation of the Belgian counterpart of B.E.L.R.A., the Father Damien FowndaNon for the Campaign against LeprrosYi. Leprosy is an important disease in the Belgian Congo aI).d we wish out sister society all . success in carrying out the objects for which it is founded. ONU , Anoriochi H. Ogwunka 1Department of Religious and Cultural Studies, University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria 2Department of Religious and Cultural Studies, Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, Nigeria *Corresponding Author Ben O. ONU Article History Received: 26.03.2021 Accepted: 04.05.2021 Published: 30.05.2021 Abstract: Hospitality is an essential universal relationship between a guest and a host. It is embedded in the deepest religious and cultural traditions, such that denying it means denying the foundation of religious life. In Judeo-Christian tradition, the practice is rooted in the encounter between Abraham and the three friends. Nigeria and indeed Africa is a deeply religious society. Every community have different myth that appear in the form of fables, sagas, folktales, and legends which gives an explanation of the past and origin of events. This study surveyed the myths and proverbs of some communities behind their hospitality practice. It examined the relationship between the Judeo-Christian narrative and Nigerian hospitality myths. Information was received through direct and indirect interviews. The study revealed that the practice of welcoming guests has been part of the cultural life of the natives prior to the advent of Christianity. Again, the act of Abraham had significant relationship with the stories of many Nigerian communities.

  • Imperatives and Significance of Igbo Traditional Practices of Ancient Bende Indigenes of Abia State, South-East, Nigeria
International Journal of Development and Sustainability ISSN: 2186-8662 – www.isdsnet.com/ijds Volume 7 Number 1 (2018): Pages 250-268 ISDS Article ID: IJDS17102402 Imperatives and significance of Igbo traditional practices of ancient Bende indigenes of Abia State, south-east, Nigeria Christian Chima Chukwu 1*, Florence Nneka Chukwu 1, Okeychukwu Anyaoha 2 1 Department of Sociology/Intelligence and Security Studies, Novena University, Ogume, Delta State, Nigeria 2 Department of Sociology, Imo State University, Owerri, Nigeria Abstract The overriding concern of this paper is to highlight that Ọkpukpere-chi has a critical mandate in the affairs of respective Bende communities, and represents a solemn communion with Chineke the supreme power as the creator of everything (visible and invisible) and the source of other deities. How truly involved are the people in the practice of Ọkpukpere-chi? And, to what extent has its practice guarantee social stability within the Bende communities? This study articulates the idea of that Ọkpukpere-chi anchors its existence on only, but one Supreme Being: Chineke (God) and many lower supernatural beings or deities (Arusi). The world view of Ọkpukpere-chi cements relations among the various Bende communities. This assertion is clearly reflected in the way and manner that, Ọkpukpere-chi practice in more ways than one, served as an umbilical cord which connected and coordinated all other facets of life. All activities in the society, whether farming, hunting, marketing, social relations, and even recreation are governed by laws and taboos, and all blend inextricably in a complicated ritual with a view to throwing light on its structure, functions and modus operandi.

  • Poverty Management Among Rural Women in Bende Local Government of Abia State, Nigeria
International Journal of Academic Research in Business and Social Sciences August 2012, Vol. 2, No. 8 ISSN: 2222-6990 Poverty Management among Rural Women in Bende Local Government of Abia State, Nigeria G.E. Ifenkwe Department of Rural Sociology and Extension, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, Nigeria E-mail: [email protected]. E.S. Kalu Department of Rural Sociology and Extension, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, Nigeria Abstract Except if it is well managed, poverty will breed poverty, and its effect will be transmitted through time from one generation to another. This realization prompted this study which assessed the poverty status of rural women in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria. One hundred and twenty (120) randomly selected women served as respondents, while data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and probit regression model. Results showed the mean capita expenditure of the respondents as N10,038.13, indicating that sixty (60) percent of women in the study area were poor. The probit regression result showed that age (-1.755*), education (8.608***), household size (2.239*) and income (2.5485***) affect poverty status of the rural women. The study recommends, among other things, promoting opportunities for empowering educationally-disadvantaged women to diversify into non-farm, income-generating activities in order to reduce their vulnerability to poverty, and as a means of managing or alleviating poverty in the area. Keywords: Poverty line, Empowerment, Per capita expenditure, Absolute poverty, Vulnerability. Introduction The world has abundant natural and human resources harnessed for the benefit of mankind.

Civil Wars and the African Universities: The University of Ibadan Example, 1967–1970 A. Adegboyega Adedire Abstract Civil war is not a new phenomenon in Africa. The Nigerian Civil War of 1967-1970 represents a dark past but provides an intriguing basis to develop a history that enables us to understand Nige- ria’s direction. It is against this backdrop that this paper examines the impact of the Nigerian Civil War on the educational decline in the University of Ibadan. While some effects were immediate, such as diminishing student admissions and enrollments, a decline in postgraduate studies, and the insecurity of lives and property, other long-term effects manifested themselves after the war include problems such as displaced families, ethnic chauvinism, and the reabsorption of the Easterners into the University community. This work relies heavily on primary sources, archival materials, newspa- pers, and secondary sources to make its case. Keywords: civil wars, universities, University of Ibadan, education War is one of the oldest human activities, so much so that in contemporary times nations of the world still devote enormous resources into the prosecution and preparation for it.1 A review of educational trends since the eighteenth century reveals a rela- tion between war and education.2 Thomas Goody has argued that war is an instrument of the national state, while education has been termed as an instrument of the national will.3 Provincial sat- isfaction with one’s nation and a smug belief in its superiority or underestimation as well as contempt for or hatred of others are often achieved through education.4 On the other hand, the accep- tance of war as a means of settling interstate conflicts, an arrogant “lick the enemy,” or “conquer the world” patriotism, and a docile readiness to obey commands when national leaders decide that the favorable moment for conflict has arrived are the various atti- tudes that have been developed in varying degrees by modern © 2018 A.
