E. Dzerzhinsky, the history of Russian secret services, defense and protection of the state border and the history of Cossacks. He is a founder of the Society for the Study of the History of Russian Secret Services and a founder of the conference «Historical Readings at the Lubyanka». This interview was given by A. M. Plekhanov during his participation in the International research and practice conference «The Activities of Russian Secret Services in the Age of Social Cataclysms», which held in Omsk on November 23rd 2017 and edited in Moscow on January 2018. The text is also available in French and Russian (see attached pdf files). The Battle of Warsaw was one of the most important moments of the Polish-Bolshevik war, one of the most decisive events in the history of Poland, Europe and the entire world. However, excluding Poland, this fact is almost completely unknown to the citizens of European countries. This phenomenon was noticed a decade after the battle had taken place by a British diplomat, Lord Edgar Vincent d’Abernon, a direct witness of the events. In his book of 1931 “The Eighteenth Decisive Battle of the World: Warsaw, 1920”, he claimed that in the contemporary history of civilisation there are, in fact, few events of greater importance than the Battle of Warsaw of 1920. There is also no other which has been more overlooked. To better understand the origin and importance of the battle of Warsaw, one needs to become acquainted with a short summary of the Polish-Bolshevik war and, first and foremost, to get to know the goals of both fighting sides. We ought to start with stating the obvious, namely, that the Bolshevik regime, led by Vladimir Lenin, was, from the very beginning, focused on expansion. Prof. Richard Pipes, a prolific American historian, stated: “the Bolsheviks took power not to change Russia, but to use it as a trampoline for world revolution”.

  • Zinoviev (Biography + Primary Sources)
    Gregory Zinoviev was born in Yelizavetgrad, Ukraine, Russia on 23rd September, 1883. The son of a Jewish diary farmers, Zinoviev received no formal schooling and was educated at home. At the age of fourteen he found work as a clerk. Zinoviev joined the Social Democratic Party in 1901. He became involved in trade union activities and as a result of police persecution he left Russia and went to live in Berlin before moving on to Paris. In 1903 Zinoviev met Vladimir Lenin and George Plekhanov in Switzerland. At the Second Congress of the Social Democratic Party in London in 1903, there was a dispute between Vladimir Lenin and Jules Martov, two of the party's main leaders. Lenin argued for a small party of professional revolutionaries with alarge fringe of non-party sympathisers and supporters. Martov disagreed believing it was better to have a large party of activists. Martov won the vote 28-23 but Lenin was unwilling to accept the result and formed a faction known as the Bolsheviks. Those who remained loyal to Martov became known as Mensheviks. Leon Trotsky, who got to know him during this period compared him to Lev Kamenev: "Zinoviev and Kamenev are two profoundly different types. Zinoviev is an agitator. Kamenev a propagandist. Zinoviev was guided in the main by a subtle political instinct. Kamenev was given to reasoning and analyzing. Zinoviev was always inclined to fly off at a tangent. Kamenev, on the contrary, erred on the side of excessive caution. Zinoviev was entirely absorbed by politics, cultivating no other interests and appetites.

Iain Lauchlan Young Felix Dzerzhinsky and the Origins of Stalinism At the time of his death in 1953 the question of Joseph Stalin’s place in history tended to polarise opinion: to the majority he was either a communist messiah or gravedigger of the revolution. These two opposite viewpoints were, oddly enough, not entirely incompatible – hagiographies and demonologies shared one common feature: regardless of whether he was thought of as a great prophet or an evil trickster, they both viewed Stalin as the lynchpin of the ruling system of thought and statecraft in the Soviet Union. Hence this system was referred to both on the right and the left as ‘Stalinism’ (even if in Leon Trotsky’s version the word signified that Stalin was merely the embodiment of a particular bureaucratic malaise). Consensus has slowly evaporated over subsequent decades, with some historians continuing to follow the Stalin-centred approach,1 whilst others point to evidence that this ideology and system of government was never simply the work of one man.2 The latter interpretation is supported by the fact that the leader himself did not appear to be particularly enthusiastic about the term ‘Stalinism’ when eager toadies, such as Lazar Kaganovich, began using it in the 1930s. And he may not have been entirely disingenuous when he famously told his son, ‘I am not Stalin. Stalin is Soviet power.’ Some historians have looked for a more nuanced account of the origins of Stalinism in the evolution of institutional procedures: viewing it as the product of certain practices common to governments in the modern world (particularly during periods of crisis in state formation).3 Others trace the origins in the realm of ideas, viewing 1 See in particular Robert C.

    Joseph Djugashvilli (Stalin), was born in Gori, Georgia on 21st Decembe, 1879. His mother, Ekaterina Djugashvilli, was married at the age of 14 and Joseph was her fourth child to be born in less than four years. The first three died and as Joseph was prone to bad health, his mother feared on several occasions that he would also die. Understandably, given this background, Joseph's mother was very protective towards him as a child. (1) Joseph's father, Vissarion Djugashvilli, was a bootmaker and his mother took in washing. He was an extremely violent man who savagely beat both his son and wife. As a child, Joseph experienced the poverty that most peasants had to endure in Russia at the end of the 19th century. (2) Soso, as he was called throughout his childhood, contacted smallpox at the age of seven. It was usually a fatal disease and for a time it looked as if he would die. Against the odds he recovered but his face remained scarred for the rest of his life and other children cruelly called him "pocky". (3) Joseph's mother was deeply religious and in 1888 she managed to obtain him a place at the local church school. Despite his health problems, he made good progress at school. However, his first language was Georgian and although he eventually learnt Russian, whenever possible, he would speak and write in his native language and never lost his distinct Georgian accent. His father died in 1890. Bertram D. Wolfe has argued "his mother, devoutly religious and with no one to devote herself to but her sole surviving child, determined to prepare him for the priesthood." (4) Stalin left school in 1894 and his academic brilliance won him a free scholarship to the Tiflis Theological Seminary.

Yet where I am having lunch today at Stikliai, a cooperative restaurant in the heart of Vilnius's Old Town you would hardly know that there is one. Little of the blockade, in fact, is reflected in what I see in the streets of Vilnius every day. It has, of course, hit Lithuania's industry hard; it is estimated that Lithuania's economy loses over 2 million rubles every day. And naturally people are tense--but strangely enough, not panicked. Except for sporadic activity by pro-Soviet groups, there are no anti-government demonstrations, no calls for strikes, no civil disorder. (And the pro-Soviet groups are not nearly as threatening in Lithuania as they are in Latvia and Estonia.) With few exceptions, everyday life proceeds much as it always has; the blockade is accepted as one more frustration in a life full of frustrations. A phrase thrown around here these days is "Nera tokio blogio kuris nepavirsto i gera" a variation of "In every cloud there is a silver lining " So I often hear people say that if there are fewer cars and trolleys on the road because of the petrol shortage, then the air is finally cleaner; we should now ride bikes, improve our fitness. (Never mind that it is near impossible to find a bike to buy; they cost up to 500 rubles on the black market).

    Nadezhda Vasilyeva GAUGN; Mikhail Chernysh, Ph.D. (Academic Advisor) Felix: The Bloody or the Iron – on the Dzerzhinsky monument: General information The Dzerzhinsky monument is a statue of Felix Edmundovich Dzerzhinsky, a Soviet statesman, a member of the Soviet government heading several commissariats and the founder of the Emergency Commission – Soviet State Security forces (Cheka). Today the monument is situated in the Muzeon park of Sculptures near the Central House of Artists on the edge of the Moscow River. The monument was originally was put on Lubyanskaya square, which was renamed Dzerzhinsky Square for many years (1926–1990). The weight of the sculpture without pedestal is 11 ton. The statue was created by prominent Soviet sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich, who also created such monuments as Soviet War Memorial in Treptower Park, Berlin (1946), Let Us Beat Swords into Plowshares in the United Nations garden (1957), The Motherland Calls! at Mamayev Kurgan (1967). The architect of the statue was Sergei Speransky. The idea to erect a monument to Dzerzhinsky was set fourth ten years after his death in a Political Bureau of the CPSU decree from July 19, 1936: “Felix Edmundovich Dzerzhinsky‘s 10th death anniversary prescript” № 41, p. 1841. The decree established: 1. For “Pravda”, “Izvestiya” “Za Indusrializatsiyu”, “Komsomolskaya Pravda” and other papers to report in details on life and work of Felix Dzerzhinsky, one of the closest associates of Lenin, the unswerving defender of unity amongst the party ranks, the Founder of the Emergency Commission – Joint State Political Directorate and the facilitator for the Party’s first big accomplishments in the sector of industry and transport.
