Room: VAF Studio 551 (2nd Fl. Visual Art Facility) The body-as-gesture has a long history as a site of aesthetic experimentation and reflection. Art-as-gesture has almost always been anchored to the body, the body in time, the body in space and the leftovers of the body This class will focus on the history of these bodies-as-gestures in performance art. An additional objective for the course will focus on the question of documentation in order to understand its relationship to performance as an active frame/framing of reflection. We will look at modernist, contemporary and post-contemporary, contemporary work by Chris Burden, Ulay and Abramovic, Allen Kaprow, Vito Acconci, Coco Fusco, Faith Wilding, Anne Hamilton, William Pope L., Tehching Hsieh, Revered Billy, Nao Bustamante, Ana Mendieta, Cindy Sherman, Adrian Piper, Sophie Calle, Ron Athey, Patty Chang, James Luna, and the work of many other body artists/performance artists. Students will develop 1 performance action a week, for 5 weeks, for a total of 5 gestures/actions (during the first part of the class), individually or in collaboration with other students. -

Reading Contemporary Performance As the nature of contemporary performance continues to expand into new forms, genres and media, it requires an increasingly diverse vocabulary. Somaesthetics and Democracy: Dewey and Contemporary Body Art MARTIN JAY Perhaps no twentieth-century philosopher was as favorably inclined towards the role of aesthetic experience in building a democratic culture as was John Dewey, the preeminent public intellectual in America during the first half of the twentieth century. His vision of democracy necessitated a robust com- mitment not only to an open-ended process of unimpeded free inquiry, which emulated that of the scientific community, but also to the self-realiza- tion that came through active participation in the public sphere. The model of that self-realization he saw best expressed in the sensually mediated, organically consummated, formally molded activity that was aesthetic ex- perience. “That which distinguishes an experience as esthetic (sic),” he wrote, “is conversion of resistance and tensions, of excitations that in themselves are temptations to diversions, into movement toward an inclusive and ful- filling close.”1 As such, it was the quintessential exemplar of what is meant when we say we “have an experience,” rather than merely register an ephem- eral sensation. In the words of Thomas Alexander, the foremost commentator on Dewey’s aesthetics, in the idea of art we find the moment in which human alienation is overcome and the need for the experience of meaning and value is satis- fied. Through art, in the aesthetic experience, the rift in the world that frustrates our primordial desire for encountering a sense of meaning and value is healed.2 Because aesthetic experience had as its telos consummation, closure, ful- fillment, and inclusion, it could function as the model of a democratic poli- tics that went beyond a thin proceduralism to a more substantive form of life. -

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 3 Abstract Through a series of case studies, analysed via the theoretical framework of site- specificity, this thesis explores the ways in which artists, from the 1980s to the present, have attempted to critically represent and understand more fully the socio- political fabric of the Mexico-U.S. border and the systemic violence that undergirds it. The introduction discusses the historical and political context of the thesis, establishes its methodological territory and outlines the current research of this field. Chapter One focuses on the collective Border Art Workshop/Taller the Arte Fronterizo (BAW/TAF) arguing, with reference to Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of the carnival, that these artists tried to propose an new and more amicable narrative of the Mexican and U.S. history. Chapter Two focuses on performance artist Guillermo Gómez-Peña whose work, created at the height of the institutionalisation of multiculturalism, analysed the role of capitalism in creating and sustaining attitudes that operated along the pernicious lines of race and nationality. Chapter Three examines Ursula Biemann’s video-essay Performing the Border, where the artist analyses female deskilled labour carried out in sweatshops in northern Mexico. I examine how she attempts to represent the hypermobility of capital vis-à-vis the physical immobility of the assembly plant worker. -

From Carola Dertnig To Yvonne Rainer 9 May 2012 Dear Yvonne, I hope this finds you well. I just travelled from Vienna with a group of students to see your show in Bregenz. I said to them: 7 hours on the train is long, but there have not been many Yvonne Rainer Retrospectives on offer yet, not in Europe and not in the States." So off we went… during the Easter holidays. It was so interesting to see the films and performances "all at once," and to better understand the relationship between the performance and films and, later on, the relationship between your early performances and your more recent performances. One of the students, Janine Schneider, came to our opening in Bregenz. I think she spoke with you? Maybe you remember meeting her in 2007, when you were in Vienna—I think —for Continuous Project Altered Daily. Two first-year students had the idea to interview you, and met you at the hotel. Of course they were excited to meet you and ask the questions they had prepared for the interview. In the middle of talking and getting the camcorder ready for recording, the fire alarm went off, and it was SO loud that you all had to leave the hotel. It was quite an exciting "fire alarm." The two students were so embarrassed, they had just started to study Performative Art at the Academy–and were just hoping that there would be no failure—and certainly no fire alarm! Anyway, Janine was one of these two students. I often think of this funny beginning. -

From Minimalism to Performance Art: Chris Burden, 1967–1971 Matthew Teti Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Matthew Teti All rights reserved ABSTRACT From Minimalism to Performance Art: Chris Burden, 1967–1971 Matthew Teti This dissertation was conceived as an addendum to two self-published catalogs that American artist Chris Burden released, covering the years 1971–1977. It looks in-depth at the formative work the artist produced in college and graduate school, including minimalist sculpture, interactive environments, and performance art. Burden’s work is herewith examined in four chapters, each of which treats one or more related works, dividing the artist’s early career into developmental stages. In light of a wealth of new information about Burden and the environment in which he was working in the late 1960s and early 1970s, this dissertation examines the artist’s work in relation to West Coast Minimalism, the Light and Space Movement, Environments, and Institutional Critique, above and beyond his well-known contribution to performance art, which is also covered herein. The dissertation also analyzes the social contexts in which Burden worked as having been informative to his practice, from the beaches of Southern California, to rock festivals and student protest on campus, and eventually out to the countercultural communes. The studies contained in the individual chapters demonstrate that close readings of Burden’s work can open up to formal and art-historical trends, as well as social issues that can deepen our understanding of these and later works.
