As Mormonism (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) continues to appear as an ever-growing topic of interest in American media, there is a gap in discourse that addresses the implications of performances of Mormon beliefs and lifestyles as performed by both members of the Church and non-believers. In this thesis, I closely examine HBO’s Big Love television series, the LDS Church’s “I Am a Mormon” media campaign, Mormon “Mommy Blogs” and the personal performance of Mormons in everyday life. By analyzing these performances through the lenses of Stuart Hall’s theories of encoding/decoding, Benedict Anderson’s writings on imagined communities, and H. L. Goodall’s methodology for the new ethnography the aim of this thesis is to fill in some small way this discursive and scholarly gap. The analysis of performances of the Mormon belief system through these lenses provides an insight into how the media teaches and shapes its audience’s ideologies through performance. iv For Caity and Emily. -

CHRISTENSEN HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL i PROLOGUE 30 March 2019 From October 2011 until August 2013, an unpaid team of scholars, strategists, and other volunteers conducted research, synthesized findings, and developed a number of strategic recommendations aimed at helping LDS leaders better understand and more compassionately minister to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in a faith crisis, meaning members experiencing severe emotional turmoil resulting from discovering Church history facts that do not align with the traditional narrative of the Church. This faith crisis project was self-initiated and completed pro bono, meaning the work was conducted without compensation. The following pages of this PDF contain a copy of the LDS Personal Faith Crisis report delivered to senior Church leaders in the early summer of 2013. A supplemental report entitled “Faith Crisis Chronicles” was also delivered to senior leaders a few weeks later in August 2013. A Tanner Bibliography 1959-2017 contains a list of publications written by Jerald and Sandra Tanner. It is complied, as far as possible, in chronological order. The listing with title and short comment is based upon the format prepared by Robert R. Black in 1970. Jerald and Sandra first started publishing their works in a mimeograph format. They later used offset printing. The following publications are considered both of their writings and exceptions will have each name after the title. For a very short period they wrote papers while living in North Hollywood, California. All other publications were done in Salt Lake City, Utah. Sandra Tanner is listed as editor of the Salt Lake City Messenger commencing October 2003. Jerald Tanner died on October 1, 2006. Not included in this bibliography are cassette tapes, videos, postings on web site, newspaper advertisements, introductions to reprinted publications, short handouts on various topics, and reprints of church periodicals. Latter-Day Saint Kinship: The Salvific Power of the Family Louisa Fowler Honors Defense Date: May 6th, 2020 Thesis Advisor: Professor Christopher Vecsey Defense Committee: Professor Benjamin Stahlberg Professor Steven Kepnes Introduction Since its inception in 1830, the people of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Days have evoked reactions from the public, ranging from confusion to outrage. In turn, the Church community has struggled to fit into secular society. The Church has constantly worked to craft and improve its relationship with the world. Recently, in 2018, Latter-Day Saint President Russell M. Nelson explained that the “Lord has impressed upon [his] mind the importance of the name he has revealed for the Church.”1 Latter-Day Saints reject the title ‘Mormons,’ asking outsiders to refer to members of the Church as Latter-Day Saints. Non-members of the Church misunderstand the Latter-Day Saint community, right down to its name. For the last two centuries, the Church community has been mysterious and confusing to the ‘outside world.’ What exactly do the Latter-Day Saints believe? Why do they behave the way that they do? Why do they seem so ‘other’, in relation to the greater society in which they live? This thesis will utilize the lens of the Latter-Day social structure-- from family life to marital expectations, to dating guidelines-- in order to demonstrate that this religion is unique due to its view of the family as sacred. An understanding of Latter-Day Saints’ family life is the key to understanding their Church because Latter-Day Saint religion is deeply relational, embedded in gender, marriage, and the family. -

CES Letter Author’s Response to Brett’s Open Letter to John Dehlin I want to thank Brett for his open letter to John Dehlin in response to John’s Facebook post regarding the CES Letter. I want to start off by saying that I am not against Brett. I agree with several points in Brett’s letter. We may disagree on a few points, but I think the weight of our agreements outweigh our disagreements. I have no problem with members of the Church staying and believing after learning about the issues and problems. I just want members and investigators to have that opportunity to know about the problems so that they can make a balanced decision as to whether or not they want to devote and commit their lives to Mormonism. There is good in the Church. There are good people. No doubt about it. Indeed, as Brett stated, “I love the church – the people in it…There are so many opportunities to serve and help others. There are great friends to be made.” I grew up and had a testimony of correlated Mormonism. I was what I now refer to as a “Chapel Mormon”. I stuck with the program. I sustained its “prophets, seers, and revelators”. I stayed within the bounds of “approved materials” and my testimony was based on the narrative and story that the LDS Church fed and sold to me, and which I fed and sold to others in the mission field for two years. So, my letter was written within the framework of the LDS Church (or “Corporate Church” as some may refer to it). -

A Genre Analysis of the Facebook Mormon Stories Podcast FB Community RACHEL NYE WR 122, Fall 2020 Introduction The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, formerly nicknamed the “Mormons,” claims a membership of 16 million strong. Within the last decade, Mormonism has been besieged by the internet, causing thousands to religiously disaffiliate from the faith. In 2012, a group of Utah State University students came to church historian, Elder Marlin K Jensen, to acknowledge “their concerns” on why the LDS church membership was “leaving in droves” (Henderson, P. et al, 2012). In the last 15 years, “the Church has been embattled by the efficiency of the internet” (Larson, 2019). With the click of a button or google search, you can access historical Mormon papers and documents at the tip of your fingertips. “Where the unsavory specifics of an older faith’s origins may have been eroded by time, reduced to a handful of too-old-to-question texts and some shriveled relics, the early years of Mormonism are well-documented and easily examined online” (Larson, 2019). Unbound ⃒ Spring 2021 For those who discover the historical inaccuracies and whitewashing of Mormon church history, questions pile onto a metaphorical shelf. Investigators begin to fight a lifetime of programming and cognitive dissonance that the church is true. These mental gymnastics to “prove” the church is true can result in a faith crisis - a spiritual awakening. During a “Mormon faith crisis” learning the difficult parts of church history can send members into a tailspin of immense mourning so deep, that many if not all, former Mormons seek places of “ love and validation, and understanding during a time of unbelievable turmoil and loss” of their faith (Former Mormon, Leah). -

Mormonism and the New Spirituality: LDS Women's Hybrid Spiritualities by Doe Daughtrey A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved April 2012 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Linell Cady, Chair Colleen McDannell Tisa Wenger Tracy Fessenden ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2012 ABSTRACT This dissertation illuminates overlaps in Mormonism and the New Spirituality in North America, showing their shared history and epistemologies. As example of these connections, it introduces ethnographic data from women who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in order to show (a) how living LDS women adapt and integrate elements from the New Spirituality with Mormon ideas about the nature of reality into hybrid spiritualities; and (b) how they negotiate their blended religious identities both in relation to the current American New Spirituality milieu and the highly centralized, hierarchical, and patriarchal Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The study focuses on religious hybridity with an emphasis on gender and the negotiation of power deriving from patriarchal religious authority, highlighting the dance between institutional power structures and individual authority.
