10 Years Ago This Week - 2009 When Lois Katzer’s husband Dennis passed away unexpectedly in April at the age of 65, he had already begun preparing his corn and bean fields north of Conrad for the upcoming growing season. Dennis’ passing was difficult enough for the family, but the thought of tending to the family’s 400 acres of corn and soybeans was sim- ply overwhelming. That’s where a trio of neighbors, including Jim Ross, Todd Button and Greg Shine, stepped in and offered to take care of the crops for the family. For Lois, the gracious offer was a weight off of her shoulders. “It was wonderful,” she said, “They’re the best people in the world.” The group split up the acreage among them selves, planting the crops and tending to its needs all summer. The beans were harvested last month, and on Friday, Nov. 20, with a crew of 30 people and no less than eight combines in tow, they met to participate in the final event of the season: a neighborhood harvest. Under a bright, clear sky, farm ers from around the area - including some who came solely by word of mouth - worked dil- igently Friday morning to harvest the remaining 200 acres of com .
