It has the shape of a shallow-dipping slab or sheet up to a few kilometres thick that was exhumed from the subduction zone and emplaced into the accretionary complex to the northwest. Today the top boundary of the slab is commonly a thrust that was originally a low-angle normal fault at its top in the subduction zone; above it is an accretionary complex and a unit of high-grade gneisses. -

Tel: +44(0)115 936 3432 Fax: +44(0)115 936 3261 Right running head: inter-tidal zone, saline incursion Anglesey Wales, airborne ABSTRACT This study considers fixed-wing airborne electromagnetic data obtained by a recent high- resolution airborne geophysical survey across the island of Anglesey, Wales. The survey detected an extensive (~10 km in length) highly conductive, near-surface zone across low- lying marsh and salt-marsh areas. The four frequency electromagnetic survey data enable a continuous assessment of subsurface conductivity variations across the inter-tidal zone and onshore into the Holocene sediments and bedrock. Inshore sea-water conductivities exceed 2000 mS/m but reduce across sandbank areas to a range of values, typically exceeding 500 mS/m. Saline incursion onshore is observed largely at lower values and at a range of scales extending to over 10 km. Within defined salt-marsh areas, a main front of near-surface incursion can be mapped and extends several hundred metres inshore. The main body of subsurface saltwater incursion is largely confined to a trough containing Holocene deposits above Upper Carboniferous (Coal) Measures which were historically mined. The main conductive zone becomes more compact, both vertically and laterally, with increasing distance inland. Modelling of the data indicates that, onshore, the major concentrations of dissolved solids are confined to the upper 30 m within undulating subsurface zones. -

Just before the Beagle: Charles Darwin’s geological fieldwork in Wales, summer 1831 Michael Roberts Darwin returned to Shrewsbury in mid-June 1831 and spent that summer learning geology. He made geological maps of Shropshire and visited Llanymynech and other localities. From 3–20th August he joined Sedgwick on his tour of North Wales; they geologised west of Shrewsbury before travelling through Llangollen, Ruthin, Conwy to Bangor finally reaching Anglesey. Darwin left Sedgwick at Menai and walked to Barmouth making a special visit of Cwm Idwal. He returned to Shrewsbury on 29th August to open the letter from Fitzroy inviting him to join the Beagle. During this summer Darwin gained skills in all aspects of geology, including chemical analysis, which were to prove vital in the development of his ideas on natural selection. Therefore on my return to Shropshire I examined sections Fieldwork and manuscripts and coloured a map of parts round Shrewsbury. WOODCOCK‡ ∗ School of Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences, University of Manchester, Manchester M13 9PL, England ‡Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge, Downing Street, Cambridge CB2 3EQ, England (Received 3 July 2012; accepted 4 September 2012; first published online 20 December 2012) Abstract – The boundary between the Rhoscolyn and New Harbour formations on Holy Island, Anglesey, has been described as a high strain zone or as a thrust. The boundary is here described at four localities, with reference to the contrasting sedimentary and deformational character of the two formations. At one of these localities, Borth Wen, sandstones and conglomerates at the top of the Rhoscolyn Formation are followed, without any break, by tuffs and then mudstones of the New Harbour Formation. It is concluded that there is clear evidence of depositional continuity across the boundary here, and that both formations subsequently shared a common two-phase deformation. The first (D1) was manifestly different in intensity and scale in the two formations, whereas the second (D2) produced very similar structures in both. The other three localities provide continuity of sedimentary and tectonic features at this boundary in a traverse along the length of Holy Island, leading us to identify two previously unrecognized major D1 folds in addition to the Rhoscolyn Anticline. At one of these localities (Holyhead), we confirm the presence of Skolithos just below the boundary, supporting radiometric evidence for a lower Cambrian or later age for the Rhoscolyn Formation. -

Box 78, Cardiff CFl lXL, UK Abstract: The ‘Penmynydd’ schists of SE Anglesey include several high P/low T lithologies including: (1) metasedimentaryquartz-phengite schist; and (2) mafic blueschist with barroisite/crossite as- semblages that appear to have developed from an earlier actinolitic greenschist facies protolith. One phengiteand three amphibole concentrates have been analysed by incremental-release40Ar/39Ar datingmethods and display discordant age spectra with anomalously young apparentages re- corded in low T increments. Ages increase systematically throughout intermediate T portions of the analyses to definehigh T plateaux of c. 550-560Ma (barroisite/crossite-rich concentrates)and c. 580-590 Ma (actinolite-rich concentrate). The phengite concentrate also displays an internally discor- dantspectrum withintermediate T incrementsdefining ages similar to thoserecorded by barroisite/crossite and high T increments giving ages similarto those of actinolite. The amphibole and phengite ages are interpreted as dating post-metamorphic cooling following a regional low-P M1 greenschistmetamorphism (c. 580-590Ma)and a high2 M2 metamorphism (c. 550-560Ma). 40Ar/39Ar ages suggest multiple metamorphism of oceanic crust before the arrival of the blueschist terrane and its accretion to the late Precambrian basement of southern Britain immediately prior to development of the Welsh Basin. The locally highly brecciated New Harbour Group bedrock is directly overlain by a bedrock-rich diamicton which preserves evidence of having undergone both periglacial (brecciation, hydrofracturing) and glacitectonic deformation (thrusting, folding), and is therefore interpreted as periglacial head deposit. The diamicton locally posses a well- developed clast macrofabric which preserves the orientation of the pre-existing tectonic structures within underlying metasedimentary rocks. Both the diamicton and New Harbour Group were variably reworked during the deposition of the later Irish Sea diamicton, resulting in the detachment of bedrock rafts and formation of a pervasively deformed glacitectonite. These structural and stratigraphic relationships are used to demonstrate that a potentially extensive layer of permafrost developed across the island before it was overridden by the Irish Sea Ice Stream. These findings have important implications for the glacial history of Anglesey, indicating that the island remained relatively ice-free prior to its inundation by ice flowing southwards down the Irish Sea Basin.
