Franken I MORE THAN JUST STEPS
Franken i MORE THAN JUST STEPS: A BEHIND THE SCENES ACCOUNT OF CHOREOGRAPHING THEATRE TCU'S MAINSTAGE MUSICAL “SISTER ACT!” By Alli Franken Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Departmental Honors in the Department of Theatre at Texas Christian University Fort Worth, TX May 4, 2020 Franken ii MORE THAN JUST STEPS: A BEHIND THE SCENES ACCOUNT OF CHOREOGRAPHING THEATRE TCU'S MAINSTAGE MUSICAL SISTER ACT! Project Approved: Supervising Professor: Jennifer Engler, MFA Department of Theatre Penny Maas, MFA Department of Theatre Sarah Newton, MFA Department of Dance Franken iii ABSTRACT This project analyzes the creative process of choreographing a musical; specifically, my journey within my debut as the sole choreographer of Sister Act! with Theatre TCU. I will describe my journey to becoming a choreographer, challenges and surprises I faced, problem solving tactics I used, and an analysis of the final outcome. I’ll share details from the casting process, rehearsals, production meetings, choreography sessions, and actual performances. Through this journey, I have learned more about myself and how to create and communicate artistic vision, as well as methods to use choreography as a tool to enhance storytelling. The account being shared must always be the priority for storytellers. Collaboration is key, and having the opportunity to work with the professional artists widened my perspective to the possibilities for creative expression and strategies to generating meaningful works of high quality entertainment. Sister Act is a co-production with our partner, the Ogunquit Playhouse in Ogunquit, Maine. Sister Act has been playing to rave reviews in Ogunquit for the past five weeks. This special production features three members from the Broadway company— Rashidra Scott, Jennifer Allen, and Blake Hammond—as well as BA Huffman, Broadway's Sister Act Musical Director. In addition, the production is directed by Steven Beckler, who worked alongside Jerry Zaks on Broadway and has directed the long-running National tours. Together with the rest of our talented creative team, staff and actors, Sister Act is sure to “raise the rafters!” Rehearsals are underway for Billy Elliot, and we are excited to have assembled an amazing cast that again includes members of the Broadway and National touring companies. -
