EUROPE IN THE WRITINGS OF TRUMAN CAPOTE OR THE STEPS TO THE CREATION OF THE NONFICTION NOVEL Emilio Cañadas Rodríguez Universidad Camilo José Cela Last 25th August 2004, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the death of the American writer Truman Capote and simultaneously, in the following months, two milestones in his literary career: the fortieth anniversary of Truman Capote’s publication of the first lines of his masterpiece: In Cold Blood1 and the forty-fifth anniversary of the publication of Local Color, where the author gives a very personal and distinctive portrait of Europe; a kind of reportage of a post-war continent that now, years after, has just lived the expansion of the European Community last 1st of May. Due to the celebration of these events in the following months, it is the aim of this research to study the connexion between Truman Capote and Europe: his vision, his opinion, his writings, travels and, furthermore, the importance and the transcendent role of Europe as the root for the non-fiction novel in the making of In Cold Blood. Europe has always been a recurrent topic in the history of American Literature. As a starting point for our issue, we think first of Henry James, who sent his characters to Europe searching, looking for the land of experience, looking for the “tree of knowledge”, a place to learn and a place to be refilled with that experience and that knowledge2. 岡山大学大学院社会文化科学研究科紀要第36号（20 3.） A Nostalgic Revisit to a Dreamland – Some Observations on Capote’s ‘A Christmas Memory’ – YOSHIOKA Fumio I Truman Capote once replied when asked about his ideas on the short story in the course of an interview: ‘When seriously explored, the short story seems to me the most difficult and disciplining form of prose writing extant. Whatever control and technique I have, I owe entirely to my training in this medium.’ （Cowley, p. 287） If he had talked with candour and sincerity （because he had a notorious penchant for pretentiousness and manipulation of his own images）, some part of the ‘control and technique’ the American author gleaned during his apprentice days could be inferred through scrutiny of his works in the genre of short fiction. Of all Capote’s stories, ‘A Christmas Memory’ occupies a special position, nearly the last in order of composition, almost the highest in critical acclaim, and arguably the most beloved by his fans and followers. Kenneth T. Reed asserts that ‘The most engaging of all Capote’s ventures into short fiction is A Christmas Memory, a blend of fiction and autobiography concentrating once more on the author’s remembered life in the South’（p. 64）. The celebrated story was first printed in the December issue of Mademoiselle magazine in 956, reprinted in Breakfast at Tiffany’s: A Short Novel and Three Stories in 958, and further reissued in The Selected Writings of Truman Capote in 963（the last edition is adopted for reference in this study with page numbers alone indicated parenthetically）. It was nonetheless the Random House edition in solo book form, published in 966 in the wake of Capote’s sensational semi-documentary novel In Cold Blood, that established the unfailing reputation of the story.
