Volume 141 April 2013 Dear Parishioners, In This Issue The Divine Mercy of Jesus

The Father so Loved the World...

By assuming our humanity, taking on our sin, bringing himself to the cross, giving Himself over, pouring Himself out, Jesus washes, redeems, and purchases this very humanity, our humanity, that He assumed. He then offers us, like Himself (as Him- self) to His Heavenly Father.

Praise be to God for His Mercy. The Divine Mercy of Jesus flowing from His Most Sacred Heart flows upon us and the whole world. This Sacred Blood and Water that flowed from that Wounded Side of our Savior forever has transformed humanity. Our newly transformed humanity gives us that new and profound relationship with the Fa- Prayer Requests - Pg. 2 ther through the power of the Holy Spirit. We are MADE into His son, His daughter. Baptism - Pg. 2 Deceased - Pg. 2 The ONE AND ONLY act of His Death and Crucifixion is perpetuated through the Supper we call “The Last”. Here, in this foreshadowing of His death, Jesus gives His Knights of Columbus - Pg. 3

Body (“This is My Body...Given”) and His Blood (“This is My Blood...Poured Out”) Bethlehem Chapel Gift Shop - to humanity and further, gives His Apostles a command (Do This) to continue this Pg. 4 very act of His self-immolation. Cemetery Policy - Pg. 5 So, while we have ONLY ONE ACT OF ULTIMATE SACRIFICE, the singular act is perpetuated throughout time until its end through the Sacrifice of the Mass. This Year of Faith Retreat - Pg. 6 “PERPETUAL SACRIFICE OF PRAISE” continues to wash, redeem, and purchase us. The Holy Mass offers humanity to the Heavenly Father as His Son offers Himself School News - Pg. 7 to His Most Beloved. Year of Faith Music - Pg. 8 Moreover, in that climatic moment when we RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION, we Altar Society - Pg. 8 partake of the One who GIVES AND POURS OUT! He abides in us and we abide in Him! We become the BODY OF CHRIST! Birthdays/Anniversaries - Pg. 9 WE BECOME WHAT WE CONSUME! Calendar - Pg. 10 How fitting that we celebrate FIRST COMMUNION ON DIVINE MERCY SUN- DAY! We continue to pray that we, who have received thousands of Communions, may never take for granted the tremendous gift of mercy “Given” and “Poured out” upon us as we receive Our Blessed Lord.

For God so Loved the World....

Knight of the month for April is Richard Sevart. Dick serves on the house committee and helps with repairs of the building and any of the appliances. He works a shift at St. Patrick Bargain Store and helps load the truck when we get an excess of used cloth- ing. He helped most recently with the cutting and breading of the fish for the fish fry. He and RoAnn help at the enchilada rolls and helps with the different din- ners. Dick is a 4th Degree member of the Knights. He is retired from the State and works on clocks as a hobby. Thank you Richard for your service.

Keeping Current: Bud Kneeland sends out reminders for meetings and activities via e-mails and he needs a few more addresses from the membership. His e-mail address: [email protected]. This comes in very handy when we need to change a meeting time or date at the last minute or a change needs to be made on an up- coming activity. If you aren’t currently receiving his e-mails then he needs yours.

Knights of the Holy Grill continued from last month. Kirk Fickel, Bob Huerter, Joe Gobea, Herman Colvin, and we can’t forget those who cooked when we had our monthly breakfast and that would include Tim Fairchild (who fancied up pancakes) and Ralph Berthot, Rocky DeLaTorre, Ron Flowers, Dale Cook, John Allen, Pat Al- len.

The fish fry’s were terrific. We served a record number of people and many are waiting for next year. I wish to thank everyone who helped cut and bread the fish and fixed the coleslaw and copper penny salad plus cakes, corn bread and all the regular cooks and especially those who cleaned up afterwards. No job is complete until the last dish is cleaned and put away. I would name names but I would miss someone and that would be a trav- esty.

Graduates: We are in charge this year of putting on the brunch for the seniors and their families and invitations have been sent out and now we await their confirmation of the number of people they will be bringing. We al- ternate every other year with the Altar Society for putting on the brunch. This is also when we award the $1,000.00 scholarship. The scholarship forms need to be picked up and returned no later than April 17th. The brunch will be held on May 5th after the 10:00am Mass. We ask the seniors to come and sit together up front in your cap and gowns if possible, thank you.

Convention is coming up at the end of the month and we need another person who would like to go with ex- penses paid. The council pays for your room and banquet tickets plus the mixer on Sunday evening and mile- age. If you would be interested please call Herman Colvin at 431-0393.

Knights membership drive during the month of April. Iola will hold a major degree on April 28th and we need new members. If you aren’t a Knight then why not? We do many charitable activities to support Pro-life, voca- tions, disaster aid, etc. If meetings aren’t your bag, then would you volunteer once or twice a year for charity work. Our Insurance and Annuity programs are voluntary but death is not. We have a triple A rated program and as a member of the Knights, you can not be turned down. Again, contact any Knight and get involved.

April 13, 2013 at 9:00am Fr. : Priest Servant, & Soldier

Father Emil Kapaun was born in Pilsen, on Holy Thursday, April 20, 1916. He was ordained as a Priest for the Diocese on June 9, 1940 and entered the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps in 1944.

Separated from the service in 1946, he re-entered the Army in 1948 and was sent to Japan the following year.

In July of 1950 Father Kapaun was ordered to Korea. On November 2 of that same year he was taken as a prisoner of war. In the seven months in prison, Father Kapaun spent himself in heroic service to his fellow prisoners without regard for race, color or creed.

To this there is testimony of men of all faiths. Ignoring his own ill health, he nursed the sick and wounded un- til a blood clot in his leg prevented his daily rounds. Moved to a so-called hospital, but denied medical assis- tance, his death soon followed on May 23, 1951.

The Diocese of Wichita and the Vatican have begun the formal process that could lead to Father Kapaun's can- onization. In 1993, it was announced that Fr. Kapaun would receive the title of "Servant of God".

“Year of Faith” Sacred Music Series Continues

By Sallie Knapp

Our Sixth Concert in our Sacred Music Series was on the March 8th. I want our 4th and 5th grade Catholic School Students to know they were phenomenal, and I appreciate the work you did to prepare for the concert! Thank you students, parents, and teachers.

I also want to say thank you to our choir members. Besides the colossal job of preparing for Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Vigil, they also worked hard to prepare the music for the concert. Thank you!! Thank you Mike Aylward for helping get the sound system and the portable keyboard hooked up for the concert. You are always a huge help! There are numerous other people who give their time and talent to helping with the con- certs. Thank you all.

The next concert in our music series will be on Sunday, April 28th, at 3:00pm. Performing will be the choir from First Baptist Church and the combined choir of Neosho County Community College and St. Cecilia. A couple of other performers are planned but not yet confirmed.

I hope you will plan on attending the upcoming concert and support the efforts of our church during this “Year of Faith”.

Thank you!

ST. PATRICK ALTAR SOCIETY Teri Kepley

Come one, come all to the April 1st Altar Society meeting! We are meeting at 7:00pm that evening to continue preparing for our part of the St. Patrick School Carnival, which will be after the 10:00am Mass on Sunday, April 14th. If you have crafts or treats you would like to donate to our Country Store, we'd love to have your help! Mark your calendars now for April 14th to participate in the School Carnival including a great meal!

The Altar Society is continuing our efforts to update our group. We have a new, improved Mission Statement, and all women of the are organized into eight circles. Each circle has a circle head who is responsible for calling her members and coordinating events such as funeral dinners and our support of other groups within the parish. For example, this year, we are helping with First Communion, the Year of Faith concerts and the School Carnival.

Another new project is making beautiful blankets for the newest members of our parish. Each baby who is bap- tized at St. Patrick Catholic Church will receive a personalized blanket to commemorate one of the most impor- tant events in their life! Don't forget, we're also publishing the Altar Society Cookbook this November! If you have recipes you'd like to have included, please drop them in the offertory basket, leave them at the parish of- fice, or share them with our president, Sandy Beins. What a great Christmas present these books will be!

We look forward to seeing you at the April 1st meeting at 7:00pm. We'd love to hear your ideas!
