(www.aarwba.org) “Dedicated To Increasing Media Coverage Of Motor Sports” 3 News & Notes A Memory Of Mark Donohue By Dick Mittman When I was motorsports editor for The Indianapolis News each May I had to do a lengthy story on the previous year's winner for our special edition. Mark provided Roger Penske his first of 15 500 victories in 1972 so during the following May I contacted Penske's right-hand- man Dan Lugenbuhl and he arranged for an interview in the Turn 2 suites. I taped about a 45-minute interview, or I thought I did. When I re- turned to the pressroom and checked my recorder I had absolutely nothing. In panic, I called Dan and asked about a repeat session. He called me back in awhile and said that Mark had to give a speech at a nearby high school that evening and he would do it afterwards if I would come over there. Photo courtesy IMS Well, it just so happened that my late wife Pat had driven me to the track that day because we were having car problems. I had no way of getting to the school. Dan went to bat again, returned in a few minutes and said that Mark would pick me up, take me with me with him and then drive me home. I was in shock that a 500 winner would do that for a sportswriter. So in shock I forgot to call my wife and tell her I'd be late getting home. I had arranged to ride home with pho- tographer Major Baynes, a friend and neighbor. Mark and his German lady friend picked me up when the track closed and we went to the engineering function about 3 miles away. At the end of the affair we drove a short distance away onto the interstate and it was about a 20-mile drive around to where I lived. As he drove I held up my tape recorder, asked probably many of the same questions and he answered them, again at length. The recorder worked fine this time. At about 10:30 p.m. he pulled the car up into my driveway on our cul-de-sac. I got out of the car, thanked him profusely and entered my house as he drove away. To meet, of course, a very unhappy wife. In fact, she refused to believe the story that Mark Donohue drove me home for almost 30 year until someone else who was there when I departed in his car confirmed the story was true. I think it was Dan. The sport lost a great man when Donohue was killed in a Formula One crash not long after that. Allen Wolfe Award to von Trebra AARWBA member Dale von Trebra received the Allen Wolfe Memorial Award at Long Beach last month. Wolfe covered the Grand Prix from 1975 Formula 5000, until he passed away, for the Long Beach Press-Telegram. Each year the Press-Telegram awards the "Spirit of the Grand Prix" to a someone who has been involved with the Grand Prix since the beginning. "We did it by trial and error." What they did was mount a Fassi hydraulic crane on a Ford F750 chassis with a 20-foot flat bed. The truck was outfitted with safety tie-downs and emergency lighting. Originally, the plan was to set the rescue crane in one position on the track for a test but after one successful recovery it was decided it should be available at all times through Race Day. RACING, REGION, AND THE ENVIRONMENT: A HISTORY OF AMERICAN MOTORSPORTS By DANIEL J. SIMONE A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2009 1 © 2009 Daniel J. Simone 2 To Michael and Tessa 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS A driver fails without the support of a solid team, and I thank my friends, who supported me lap-after-lap. I learned a great deal from my advisor Jack Davis, who when he was not providing helpful feedback on my work, was always willing to toss the baseball around in the park. I must also thank committee members Sean Adams, Betty Smocovitis, Stephen Perz, Paul Ortiz, and Richard Crepeau as well as University of Florida faculty members Michael Bowen, Juliana Barr, Stephen Noll, Joseph Spillane, and Bill Link. I respect them very much and enjoyed working with them during my time in Gainesville. I also owe many thanks to Dr. Julian Pleasants, Director Emeritus of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program, and I could not have finished my project without the encouragement provided by Roberta Peacock. I also thank the staff of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program. Finally, I will always be grateful for the support of David Danbom, Claire Strom, Jim Norris, Mark Harvey, and Larry Peterson, my former mentors at North Dakota State University. A call must go out to Tom Schmeh at the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, Suzanne Wise at the Appalachian State University Stock Car Collection, Mark Steigerwald and Bill Green at the International Motor Racing Resource Center in Watkins Glen, New York, and Joanna Schroeder at the (former) Ethanol Promotion and Information Council (EPIC).

Auto & Motorcycle Titles Spring 2020 {IPG} The Brown Bullet Rajo Jack's Drive to Integrate Auto Racing Bill Poehler Summary The powers-that-be in auto racing in the 1920s, namely the American Automobile Association’s Contest Board, prohibited everyone who wasn’t a white male from the sport.
