CREATIVE ASSOCIATE SERIES Wednesday, Collaborating November 18, Remotely 1pm ET Join us on Zoom A Conversation With yMusic (Passcode: 308057) Photo: Graham Tolbert The Juilliard School presents Collaborating Remotely A Conversation With yMusic Since March 2020, yMusic has developed group compositions through generative meetings and layered round-robin home recording, editing, and mixing processes from the ensemble’s six home studios. The musicians of yMusic—Creative Associate Nadia Sirota (BM ’04, MM ’06, viola); Hideaki Aomori (BM ’04, clarinet); Gabriel Cabezas, cello; CJ Camerieri (BM ’04, trumpet); Rob Moose, violin; and Alex Sopp (BM ’05, MM ’07, flute)—will discuss their creative process and how they have adapted their collaborative practice during lockdown. They will also present a piece that they collaboratively composed from their separate spaces, talk about how their ideas about it have evolved, and dissect the recording session that they developed together despite current limitations. A Q&A with the artists will follow. Juilliard’s creative enterprise programming, including the Creative Associates program, is generously supported by Jody and John Arnhold. 1 yMusic The contemporary ensemble yMusic, founded in New Yo r k City in 2008, believes in presenting emotionally communicative music, regardless of style or idiom. The sextet’s virtuosic execution and unique configuration (string trio, flute, clarinet, and trumpet) have attracted the attention of high- profile collaborators—from Paul Simon to Bill T. Jones to Ben Folds—and inspired original works by today’s foremost composers, including Nico Photo: Graham Tolbert Muhly, Missy Mazzoli, and Andrew Norman. Last season, yMusic debuted a new work, Difference, by Grawemayer- and Grammy-winning composer Andrew Norman, toured the U.S. with singer-songwriter Bruce Hornsby, and released Ecstatic Science, its fourth full-length album, which features music by Missy Mazzoli, Gabriella Smith, Paul Wiancko, and Caroline Shaw. yMusic is taking time this season to work on its own collaborative compositions. After premiering several of these works on tour, the ensemble plans to release an album of original work. Other recent highlights include a sold-out show at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall, a collaborative album with the Staves on Nonesuch Records, a recording of “God Only Knows” with John Legend for the Grammy Awards, and summer appearances at the Sarasota Music Festival and Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts. yMusic is featured on ”You've Got Time” by Regina Spektor, the title theme for the final season of Netflix's Orange Is the New Black. Other yMusic recordings include 2017’s First, 2014’s Balance Problems, and 2011’s Beautiful Mechanical. In addition to performing its own repertoire, yMusic serves as a ready-made collaborative unit for bands and songwriters and has lent its distinctive sound to dozens of albums, including In the Blue Light by Paul Simon, with whom the group appeared on Saturday Night Live, and toured arenas, amphitheaters, and outdoor festivals across the globe as featured guests on Paul Simon's Homeward Bound: The Farewell Tour. 2 Nadia Sirota Nadia Sirota (BM ’04, MM ’06, viola)—whose career spans performance, curation, and broadcasting—brings classical music to a broader audience. Her singular sound and expressive execution have served as muse to composers including Nico Muhly, Missy Mazzoli, Daníel Bjarnason, Marcos Balter, and David Lang. She has been a soloist with many orchestras and has released four solo albums of commissioned music: Photo: Shervin Lainez first things first (2009), Baroque (2013), Keep in Touch (2016), and Tessellatum (2017). Sirota is a member of Bedroom Community, a collective of musically diverse artists who work and collaborate at Reykjavík’s Greenhouse Studios. She has also lent her sound to recording and concert projects by the National, David Bowie, John Legend, and Björk. Sirota is a member of the chamber sextet yMusic and since 2018 she has been the New Yo r k Philharmonic’s Marie-Josée Kravis creative partner, a position created for her. She is also artist in residence at UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance and a Creative Associate at Juilliard, where she studied with Heidi Castleman, Misha Amory, and Hsin-Yun Huang. 3 Juilliard Board of Trustees and Administration BOARD OF TRUSTEES Jazz Wynton Marsalis, Director of Juilliard Jazz Bruce Kovner, Chair Aaron Flagg, Chair and Associate Director J.
