While the West is quick to slap a “suppressed” sticker on Middle Eastern women as a group, fixating on veiling as a sure-fire indicator of backwardness and victimization, the reality is that when it comes to influential women in the visual arts, the Middle East is moving towards equality much more rapidly than the West. Well-educated women from the region hold some of the most powerful leadership positions as curators, dealers, critics, fair directors, and patrons. According to “Middle Eastern Titans,” a report on 2012–2014 auction results prepared by artprice, among the region’s top yielding artists at auction are Ghada Amer (Egypt/USA), Mona Hatoum (Lebanon), and Canan Tolon (Turkey).

While Chronos refers to the measured passage of time, Kairos describes the quality of time, which includes also the awareness of the inspirational stillness between times. Kairos is also seen as the time of the Gods, a time given to meditation, of waiting for the ‘right moment’ that precedes creative action. The emotional, even physical awareness of time and memory gives subject and substance to the work of the artist Maliheh Afnan. In the contemplations that precede her creative decisions, and guide her working processes, she finds timelessness. 4 MALIHEH AFNAN MALIHEH AFNAN 5 Afnan writes her paintings. • Text Panel Taking Shape
Taking Shape: Abstraction from the Arab World, 1950s–1980s Grey Art Gallery, New York University January 14–April 4, 2020 Main Text Panel and Individual Object Labels Main Text Panel Taking Shape: Abstraction from the Arab World explores mid-20th-century abstract art from North Africa, West Asia, and the Arab diaspora—a vast geographic expanse that encompasses diverse cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and religious backgrounds. Comprising nearly 90 works by artists from countries including Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Qatar, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the exhibition is drawn from the collection of the Barjeel Art Foundation based in Sharjah, UAE. The paintings, sculpture, drawings, and prints on view here reflect the wide range of nonfigurative art practices that flourished in the Arab world over the course of four decades. Decolonization, the rise and fall of Arab nationalisms, socialism, rapid industrialization, wars and mass migrations, and the oil boom transformed the region during this period. With rising opposition to Western political and military involvement, many artists adopted critical viewpoints, striving to make art relevant to their own locales. New opportunities for international travel and the advent of circulating exhibitions sparked cultural and educational exchanges that exposed them to multiple modernisms—including various modes of abstraction—and led them to consider their roles within an international context. The featured artists—a varied group of Arab, Amazigh (Berber), Armenian, Circassian, Jewish, Persian, and Turkish descent—sought to localize and recontextualize existing 20th-century modernisms, some forming groups to address urgent issues. Moving away from figuration, they mined the expressive capacities of line, color, and texture.

Kettle’s Yard, Castle Street, Cambridge, CB3 0AQ, www.kettlesyard.co.uk Modern Times: responding to chaos drawings and films selected by Lutz Becker Kettle’s Yard is launching a new series of exhibitions called Modern Times. People creatively involved in the 20th and 21st centuries are asked to trace their own paths through the art of our times. For the first exhibition, Modern Times: responding to chaos, film-maker, painter and curator, Lutz Becker focuses on drawing and film, the oldest and most fundamental medium and one of the most modern. The subtitle of this first exhibition, ‘responding to chaos’, reflects the predicament of artists in a period marked by totalitarian regimes, world wars, nuclear and climatic threats, and accelerating technological and social change. It has also been a time when established values have been open to criticism and doubt and international cultural influences have enhanced the awareness of their relativity.

For our 30th anniversary year, Leeds International Film Festival we’re presenting over 300 events in a record 30 venues citywide, taking the LIFF experience into cinemas, music halls, churches, community venues, pubs, bars, clubs, museums, colleges, Millennium Square, Kirkgate Market, Leeds Station, and even onto boats. In partnership with Bruntwood, we’ve also commissioned a virtual reality short starring the city itself: Welcome to Leeds, a City in Bloom NOV 3 - 17, 2016 takes you on a 360° tour of new and historic sites in the company of poetry from Leeds Young Authors. We’ve collaborated with so many more organisations and individuals based in the city to produce LIFF30, including with Leeds Inspired and four artists on the creation of our anniversary posters that appear on this page. LIFF30 is an epic celebration of Leeds and film, and a huge thank you to everyone who has made it possible.
