  • Constructing Urban Tourism Space Digitally: a Study of Airbnb Listings in Two Berlin Neighborhoods
Constructing Urban Tourism Space Digitally: A Study of Airbnb Listings in Two Berlin Neighborhoods NATALIE STORS, Tourism Geography, University of Trier, Germany SEBASTIAN BALTES, Software Engineering, University of Trier, Germany Over the past decade, Airbnb has emerged as the most popular platform for renting out single rooms or whole apartments. The impact of Airbnb listings on local neighborhoods has been controversially discussed in many cities around the world. The platform’s widespread adoption led to changes in urban life, and in particular urban tourism. In this paper, we argue that urban tourism space can no longer be understood as a fixed, spatial entity. Instead, we follow a constructionist approach and argue that urban tourism space is (re-)produced digitally and collaboratively on online platforms such as Airbnb. We relate our work to a research direction in the CSCW community that is concerned with the role of digital technologies in the production and appropriation of urban space and use the concept of representations as a theoretical lens for our empirical study. In that study, we qualitatively analyzed how the two Berlin neighborhoods Kreuzkölln and City West are digitally constructed by Airbnb hosts in their listing descriptions. Moreover, we quantitatively investigated to what extend mentioned places differ between Airbnb hosts and visitBerlin, the city’s destination management organization (DMO). In our qualitative analysis, we found that hosts primarily focus on facilities and places in close proximity to their apartment. In the traditional urban tourism hotspot City West, hosts referred to many places also mentioned by the DMO. In the neighborhood of Kreuzkölln, in contrast, hosts reframed everyday places such as parks or an immigrant food market as the must sees in the area.

UNSETTLED GERMANS: THE RECEPTION AND RESETTLEMENT OF EAST GERMAN REFUGEES IN WEST GERMANY, 1949-1961 By Eric H. Limbach A DISSERTATION submitted to Michigan State University, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY History 2011 ABSTRACT UNSETTLED GERMANS: THE RECEPTION AND RESETTLEMENT OF EAST GERMAN REFUGEES IN WEST GERMANY, 1949-1961 By Eric H. Limbach This study focuses on the migration of East German refugees into West Berlin and West Germany between the establishment of the GDR and FRG in 1949 and the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, an influx that, over the course of twelve years, totaled more than three million individuals. While the newcomers were physically indistinguishable and, apart from a few regional differences, shared a common language, culture and religious background with those already residing in West Germany, the presence of these refugees, like that of many other groups of migrants, was still considered a significant danger to the public order – a perception that was deeply rooted in the historical context of migration in Germany. In response to the influx, the Federal Republic and West Berlin established a comprehensive registration process for refugees, which attempted to determine whether refugees had a valid reason for their flight, and set up temporary camps to accommodate those awaiting resettlement in West Germany. Longer-term solutions included the creation of new employment opportunities and the construction of adequate (and permanent) housing in West German cities. However, these efforts required the cooperation of organizations and agencies at several levels of government, and disagreements among the West German Länder, West Berlin, and the Federal Government had a significant impact on the reception process.

  • Revolution in Germany 1918 - 1919
Revolution in Germany 1918 - 1919 The Facebook Diaries (I) By Bernd Hendricks Between November 2018 and April 2019, I posted the diary TODAY 100 YEARS AGO on Facebook about the Revolution of workers and soldiers that swept away the Kaiser monarchy, gave birth to the first republic in Germany, and wrestled without success against the power of big industry and the military. Here, I have compiled these postings and added a few. They are based on what I as a child learned from members of my family and their friends who were involved in the revolutionary events, as well on recently released books about the subject and new studies by young historians who are not bound anymore by the ideological limits of the cold war. I have written the texts in English to the best of my knowledge. I aplogize for any grammatical or spelling errors or for wrong punctuation you might find,. If there is an error unbearable to you, please notify me. I am in a position, history will never be: I can correct the mistakes and will present you a new and better version. Bernd Hendricks Summer 1918. The war is in its fourth year. It has eaten millions and makes the living starve. Cabbage instead of patatoes: Seven hundred thousand die in Germany of malnourishment. However, the industrialist Hugo Stinnes alone earns 400 million Reichsmark with his ammunition factory in Dortmund. In January, mass strikes for peace have taken place. In Berlin workers elected for the first time a Workers’ Council. It was banned. Arrests followed.
