Initially it was found only in Corio Bay, but during the past fiveyears it has spread so that it now occurs throughout the western half of Port Phillip Bay. • Densities of Sabella in many parts of the bay remain low but densities are usually higher (up to 13/m2 ) in deeper water and they extend into shallower depths in calmer regions. • Sabella larvae probably require a 'hard' surface (shell fragment, rock, seaweed, mollusc or sea squirt) for initial attachment, but subsequently they may use their own tube as an anchor in soft sediment . • Changes to fish communities following the establishment of Sabella were analysed using multidimensional scaling and BACI (Before, After, Control, Impact) design analyses of variance.

Ward* CSIRO Division of Marine Research, GPO Box 1538, Hobart. Tasmania 7001, Australia ABSTRACT. Three Austral~an(Cockburn Sound, Western Australia, Adelaide, South Australia. Port Ph~llipBay, Victoria) and four European (Roscoff, Atlantic; Alicante, Carteau, and Marseille, all from the Mediterranean Sea) populations of Sabella spallanzanii were exam~nedfor variation at 23 allozyme loci. Levels of genetlc variation were high, with average heterozygosities per locus ranging from 0.20 to 0.21 for the Australian collections, and from 0.23 to 0.27 for the European collections. The 3 Australian collections were genetically very closely related to one another, with no stat~st~callysignificant differ- ences at any of the 15 variable locl. This suggests either an introduction to one port, with a subsequent spread to other areas, or separate introductions with subsequent extensive gene flow. The 4 European collections showed I~m~ted,but significant, d~fferent~ationamong themselves at 10 of 18 variable loc~ Much of the: heterogeneity reflected differences betlveen the Roscoff (Atlantic) collection and the 3 Mediterranean collect~ons.The Koscoff collect~onwas Iess variable, In terms of both heterozygos~ty and mean numbers of allelrs, than the hiled~terraneancollections The Australian collect~onswere more closely rclated to the Xlrditerranean collections (mean Nei distance = 0.040) than to the Roscoff collection (mean Nei distance = 0.084). THE respiratory blood-pigment chlorocruorin is found only in sabellid, serpulid, and chlorhaemid polyehaete worms. The peculiarities and function of this pigment, together with the physiology of respiration and blood circulation in sabellids, have been studied by Fox and his collaborators (Fox, 1926, 1932, 1933, 1934, 1938; Eoche and Fox, 1933; E. F. Ewer and Fox, 1940). Before further work can be done on these lines it is desirable to have a more detailed knowledge than hitherto of the anatomy of the blood system in the animals concerned. It was for this reason that the present investigation was under- taken. A study has been made of the anatomy of the blood system of Sabella pavonina Savigny, and this has been compared with that of Spirographis spallanzanii Viviani. The latter species is so closely related to the former that Claparede (1868-71, p. 418) remarked: 'les jeunes Spiro- graphes sont done de vraies Sabelles.' 2. PREVIOUS WORK. The anatomy of the blood system of Sabella was studied by Milne Edwards (1838). He described the arrangement of blood-vessels which could be seen by means of a dorsal dissec- tion. In the same year Grube (1838) gave an account of the anatomy of the blood system of Spirographis. His descrip- tion was based on the observation of living material and the dissection of fixed specimens. He made accurate observations on the movement of the blood in the crown.

It may also inflict economic damage by competing with mussels and oysters in aquaculture farms. view this species on IUCN Red List Species Description The European fan worm (Sabella spallanzanii) is one of the largest species in the family Sabellidae with a leathery tube and spiral feeding fan that can reach 10 to 15cm in diameter. The tube can protrude up to 40cm above the sediment and bury as deep as 10cm into the sediment. Sabella commonly forms clumps of two or more individuals, creating a canopy of feeding fans that stretches over the sediment (O’Brien Ross and Keough 2006). This tube-dwelling worm remains inside its tube and extends a fan-like crown of tentacles through the opening of its tube. When the worm is disturbed it withdraws into the tube and closes the end off. The tube is often covered with encrusting or fouling organisms and the fan colour varies from white and pale fawn through to orange and banded red-brown (CSIRO 2001). The crown is composed of two lobes, only one of which is spiralled (NIMPIS 2002). Notes The European fan worm (Sabella spallanzanii) is known to regenerate damaged body parts both anteriorly and posteriorly, while the worm continues to function.

Their distribu- tion patterns on hard-bottom substrates are poorly studied so far. Little is known about the factors influencing their distribution, including the protection regimes that are known to affect assemblage diversity. We analyzed hard-bottom Sabellida at 1.5 and 5 m depths at the Torre Guaceto Marine Protected Area (MPA) (SE Italy) to describe diversity and distribution patterns, and to identify potential factors influencing their distribution. The Sabellida diversity varied significantly among stations and was higher at 5 m depth. No relation with the protection regime was found. Among environmental variables, only sedimentation appeared related, suggesting that local trophic features might have influenced the observed pattern. Among habitat formers, only the macroalga Halimeda tuna significantly explained part of the observed variation, probably due to its role as a basibiont for some Sabellida taxa. Other predictor variables of Sabellida distribution were the abundances of some invertebrate taxa, especially Syllidae and some filter feeders such as Sabellariida and Cirripedia, probably due to shared ecological requirements, rather than a direct effect on Sabellida distribution. The relation with the Syllidae remains obscure so far, albeit some kind of interaction (including Citation: Musco, L.; Licciano, M.; predator/prey interactions) between these two taxa cannot be excluded.

Ryan Gregory Dr. Jonathan Newman This thesis concerns genomic variation within the Annelida, for which genome size studies are few and provide data for only a handful of groups. Genome size estimates were generated using Feulgen image analysis densitometry for 35 species of leeches and 61 polychaete species. Relationships were explored utilizing collection location and supplementary biological data from external sources. A novel, inverse correlation between genome size and maximum adult body size was found across all leeches. Leeches that provide parental care had significantly larger genome sizes than leeches that do not. Additionally, specimens identified as Nephelopsis obscura exhibited geographic genome size variation. Within the Polychaeta, Polar region polychaete genomes were significantly larger than those of Atlantic and Pacific polychaetes. These studies represent the first exploration of leech genome sizes, and provide base evidence for numerous future studies to examine relationships between genome size and life history traits across and within different annelid groups. Within the order Sabellida, Fauchald (1977) placed five families of sedentary worms. His ordinal arrangement of families is still widely recognized in spite of later ideas on the subject. The families are : (1) Sabellidae Malmgren, 1867, (2) Caobangiidae Jones, 1974, (3) Sabellongidae Hartman, 1969, (4) Serpulidae Johnston, 1865 and (5) Spirorbidae PiHai, 1970. Out of these five families, so far only Sabellidae and Serpulidae are known to occur in the 'coastal waters of Pakistan. The polychaete fauna of Pakistan is poorly known as compared to the fauna of regions close to it. The total number of known species of Sabellida reported from Pakistan is eleven. Fauvel (1932) was the first worker who reported a sabellid worm, Sabellastarte indica Savigny, 1822 from Karachi.

Desde entonces, se han efec- tuado una serie de contribuciones sistemáticas de la familia Sabellidae, lo que ha ocasionado cambios en el estado taxonómico de varios géneros y especies. Este trabajo proporciona nuevos nombres, sinónimos y nuevos registros, así como una lista de los sabélidos nombrados por el Prof. Ernst Ehlers. Se enlistan 13 géneros y 23 especies para Chile. Fabriciinae está representada por una especie y Sabellinae por 12 géneros y 22 especies. Tres especies que fueron descritas originalmente para Chile actualmente no se consideran válidas, mientras que siete registros permanecen como cuestionables hasta que una revisión garantice su distribución. El Prof. Ehlers estableció el género Potamis y 24 especies de sabélidos para diversas localidades del mundo. Entre esas especies, 17 se consideran válidas, dos insertae sedis y cinco han sido sinonimizadas, mientras que el género Potamis fue reemplazado con Potamethus.
