After seeing Mascagni’s success, he decided to write an opera in response: one act composed in the verismo style. Leoncavallo claimed that he based the story of Pagliacci on an incident from his childhood, a murder in 1865, the victim of which was a Leoncavallo family servant, Gaetano Scavello. The murderer was Gaetano D’Alessandro, with his brother Luigi an accomplice to the crime. The incident resulted from a series of perceived romantic entanglements involving Scavello, Luigi D’Alessandro, and a village girl with whom both men were infatuated. Leoncavallo’s father, a judge, was the presiding magistrate over the criminal investigation. Pagliacci was performed in Milan in 1892 with immediate success; today it is the only work by Leoncavallo in the standard operatic repertory. Its most famous aria “Vesti la giubba” (“Put on the costume” or, in the better-known older translation, “On with the motley”) was recorded by Enrico Caruso and laid claim to being the world’s frst record to sell a million copies, although this is probably a total of Caruso’s various versions of it made in 1902, 1904 and 1907. The Composer The son of a judge, Ruggero Leoncavallo was born in Naples on April 23, 1857. It was not until his La bohème was performed in 1897 in Venice that his talent obtained public confrmation. However, it was outshone by Puccini’s opera of the same name and on the same subject, which was premiered in 1896. Two tenor arias from Leoncavallo’s version are still occasionally performed, especially in Italy. Subsequent operas by Leoncavallo were in the 1900s: Zazà (the opera of Geraldine Farrar’s famous 1922 farewell performance at the Metropolitan Opera), and 1904’s Der Roland von Berlin. In 1906 the composer brought singers and orchestral musicians from La Scala to perform concerts of his music in New York, as well as an extensive tour of the United States. The tour was, all in all, a qualifed success. He had a brief success with Zingari which premiered in Italian in London in 1912, with a long run at the Hippodrome Theatre. Zingari also reached the United States but soon disappeared from the repertoire. The Dedication This arrangement for wind band and tenor is dedicated to Dr. Brian Asher Alhadeff in deep appreciation for his extraordinary effort to bring professionally performed opera to the central coast of California. Dr. Alhadeff is an internationally acclaimed opera, ballet, and symphonic, conductor with unique specialization in both producing and conducting stage productions exceeding 200 artists. • Pagliacci − an Opera by Ruggero Leoncavallo
PAGLIACCI − AN OPERA BY RUGGERO LEONCAVALLO Pagliacci (in English: Clowns) is an Italian opera with a prologue and two acts, with both the music and the libretto by Ruggero Leoncavallo. Opera companies have frequently staged Pagliacci together with Cavalleria rusticana by Mascagni, a double bill known colloquially as 'Cav and Pag'. Ruggero Leoncavallo, a son of a judge, was born on 1857 in Naples. He studied at the Naples Conservatory and then moved to Paris to try there a musical career but he got only so far as playing in cafés and giving piano and singing lessons. The only positive aspect of his time in Paris was that during this time he met a young lady, Berthe Rambaud, a "preferred student" of his, so much preferred that she became his wife. He also composed around this time a symphonic poem "La nuit de mai" (English: ‘A Night in May’), which premiered to critical acclaim. With this success and now with enough accumulated money, Leoncavallo and his wife returned to Milan to try his luck there as an opera composer. He spent some years teaching and attempting ineffectively to obtain the production of another of his operas. Then in 1890, at age 33, he saw the enormous success of Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana and wasted no time in producing in only five months, his own verismo work, Pagliacci. As the Cavalleria, which we heard last Sunday, this is also a quintessentially verismo opera, a genre that is oriented toward the lives of average contemporary man and woman and their problems, generally of a romantic, sexual, or violent nature, instead of dealing with gods, mythological figures, or kings and queens.

  • Forgotten Splendour
FORGOTTEN SPLENDOUR A Chronology of the North Shore Music Festival 1909 to 1939 by Andrew Cottonaro Beginning in 1909 and lasting until 1939, the North Shore Music Festival of Northwestern University was a significant musical and social event in the Chicago area. For a few days each Spring, the campus hosted a diverse body of performers in a series of grand concerts. Naturally, some of that era’s most eminent singers could be heard there. Their presence certainly helped to sell tickets and their artistry helped to sustain the festival as a popular and critical success. Now, sixty years later, the festival hardly even counts as a faded memory. To date, two books (in part), offer a general outline of the festival’s history, but both lack any detailed analysis of who appeared and what was actually sung. This is the first attempt to present a chronology of the vocal offerings (quite distinct from the orchestral offerings) at the festival. Northwestern University, the official sponsor of the festival, is located in Evanston, Illinois (USA). The town is a suburb of Chicago, directly north of the city and on the banks of Lake Michigan. Because of this geographic position, Evanston and the other cities of the area are called the North Shore, hence the origin of the festival’s name. Northwestern University was incorporated in 1850 and gradually won recognition for its academic excellence. The establishment of musical studies, however, was a tangled web of many failed efforts. In a final and desperate attempt to salvage musical education, the university’s board of trustees in 1891 appointed Peter Christian Lutkin (1858-1931) to direct musical studies, a post that he held until his death.

From the late 1880s until the 1940s, the period covered by the bulk of these materials, the performing arts thrived in Brooklyn and were available to residents right at their doorsteps. At one point, there were over 200 theaters in Brooklyn. Frequented by the rich, the middle class and the working poor, they enjoyed mass popularity. With materials from 115 different theaters, the collection spans almost a century, from 1875 to 1972. The highest concentration is in the years 1890 to 1909, with approximately 450 items.
