    SUMMER MAGAZINE 2016 SUMMER FUN PAGES 2016 GEOFF’S PICTURE OF LLANGORSE LAKE FROM HIS GLIDER RECIPE PAGE Page 2 Flapjacks - Makes 8 Preparation time: 1 hour What you need: • 175 g butter • 175g golden syrup •175g muscovado sugar • 350g porridge oats • 1/2 lemon, finely grated zest • pinch ground ginger WHAT TO DO: • Preheat the Oven to 150 C. Line a baking tin with baking paper. • Melt the butter in a saucepan. Spread a little bit of the melted butter in the baking tin. Add the golden syrup and sugar to the butter heat gently. • When the sugar has dissolved, take the saucepan off the heat. Stir in the porridge oats, lemon zest and ginger. • Put the mixture into the baking tin and squash it down. Put the tin in the oven for 40 minutes. • Once cooked, take the tin out of the oven. It is the only large natural lake in South Wales and its great wildlife value is reflected by its designation as a site of European importance. An Advisory Group representing all the main interests has been formed to advise the owner on the use of the lake. This group introduced voluntary restrictions in 1999 to benefit the ecology of the lake and its enjoyment. The intention is to protect the reed beds, the areas of water lilies and pond weeds and to avoid excessive disturbance of birds. The restrictions have now been simplified to some extent but are still complicated because so many interests are involved. However, they will help to conserve the lake for everyone to enjoy and we ask all visitors to respect them. The map shows the restricted zones and the details are as follows.     The Wye Catchment Partnership Plan Hosted By: Supported By: Version: 2019-20 1 1. Introduction: The Wye Catchment The Wye catchment covers 4,285km2 spanning two countries and five counties. The River Wye stretches for over 200 kilometres from its source at Plynlimon in mid-Wales to the Severn estuary making it the fifth longest river in the UK. For most of its length the river runs through the Welsh Marches and has many significant tributaries including the Elan, Irfon, Ithon, Lugg and Monnow. The Wye is an internationally important habitat, reflected in its designation as a Site of Specific Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC). The catchment is rich in wildlife and precious habitat which is recognised by its designated areas including the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), National Nature Reserves, Local Nature Reserves and terrestrial SSSI’s. The Wye flows through several sizeable towns including Builth Wells, Hay-on-Wye, Hereford, Monmouth and Chepstow with Kington, Leominster, Llandrindod Wells and Bromyard as the main towns within the tributary network. The main land-use is agriculture with livestock farming predominating in the north and west and intensive arable farming in the south and east of the catchment. There is some industry based around the major towns. The area offers many opportunities for water based recreation and the Wye and Lugg are unusual in that there is a public right of navigation in England. The River Wye is a well-established and nationally significant salmon, brown trout and coarse fish fishery. Elver fishing also takes place within the tidal reaches of the Wye.

There was also the 2nd Blyth’s Pipit, this time on the mainland at St. David’s Head, two Blyth’s Reed Warblers, one each for Bardsey and Skomer, which constituted only the 3rd & 4th Welsh records (odd when this species has been down-graded in the rest of the UK and is no longer assessed by BBRC), Then there were the 4th Welsh records for Great Spotted Cuckoo, Ross’s & Franklin’s Gulls and Collared Pratincole. Added to the mix came five Kumlien’s Gulls, the 6th Lesser Scaup, 7th & 8th Citrine Wagtails (both on Bardsey and the 9th Great Snipe.
