PREP VOLLEYBALL: DALTON HIGH Lady Cats’ Broadrick decides on Lee To continue career at Cleveland school

BY ADAM KROHN [email protected] For Dalton High’s Emily Broadrick, the recruiting process wasn’t going how she envisioned. The 2008 Daily Citizen All-Area Volleyball Player of the Year had hopes of attending the University of Georgia and walking on with the Lady Bulldogs. But Broardrick wasn’t accepted into the Athens school. She was interested in Jacksonville State in Alabama, but that program didn’t come through with an offer. Broadrick had scholar- ship offers from Georgia State and Shorter, but decided neither school was for her after visiting the campus- es. Donahue The 6-foot-2-inch Broadrick, who played middle hitter for Dalton throughout her prep career, was prepared to enroll at Kennesaw State and not play volleyball. However, she learned of Lee University through Sarah Smith, an assistant coach for Broadrick’s Choo Choo City club team, which she played for over the past two years. Smith had just completed her freshman sea- son with Lee and sold Broadrick on the idea of consid- ering the Cleveland, Tenn., school. After Broadrick e-mailed Lee coach Andrea Hudson with the basic information to get the recruiting process started, Hudson invited Broadrick to a Lee practice and later traveled to Atlanta to watch Broadrick in her final club tournament of the season. Hudson liked what she saw and offered Broadrick a combination scholarship. Broadrick gladly accepted Lee’s offer. “I’m really excited about it,”Broadrick said. “I love the sport and wasn’t ready for my career to end. I know it will be a lot different than playing in high school, more serious, because I know I’ll be working to keep my scholarship.” Broadrick will attend Lee on both academic and ath- letic scholarships that combined equals a full ride.
