ACROSS THE NET Melton Table Tennis February 2019 Edition 52 2019 PREVIEW, STARS OF LAST YEAR, STAR AWARDS WRAP, STARS AT PLAY, & MUCH MORE In this edition, we look forward to another year, look back on our presentation night, discuss the annual Star Awards, discuss the only American to win a Singles World Championship, and talk about government funding (or the lack of it). WE’RE BACK Another year kicks off, and it’s going to be a big one. The practice nights were well attended and introduced quite a few new faces to the club. We are already underway with our Summer season, and it’s great to see the hall full of happy, competitive people enjoying themselves. Over the next few months we can hopefully unveil some new initiatives around the club. Stay tuned for news to come. PRESENTATION NIGHT A ROARING SUCCESS What a great night we had at our 2018 Presentation Night. Good food, marvellous music, great atmosphere, wonderful friends, and over 100 trophies going to nearly 60 very deserving winners. Our club band, Ping Pong had everyone entertained with some great music all night long. Many thanks to Simon Reich, John Batty and Josh Dias for playing some great tunes all through the night. And how lucky we were to have Olympian, Paralympian, and Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist, Melissa Tapper as our guest speaker. Milly certainly entertained and inspired us all with her story, and was very generous with her time, talking to members and posing for quite a lot of selfies. But the star of the night was the magnificent cake made by Andy Stewart. -

ACROSS THE NET Melton Table Tennis July 2018 Edition 46 BACK FROM THE BREAK, CLUB CHAMPS, BENDIGO RESULTS, TABLE TENNIS USA, & MUCH MORE In this edition we talk about our upcoming Cub Championships, praise our players at the Bendigo Teams Championships, wrap-up the World Teams Cup and the Japan Open, discuss the next whiz-kid, remind you to get your tickets for the Australian Open, and talk about the pro’s and con’s of table tennis in the USA. WE’RE BACK AND READY TO GO After our enforced mid-year hiatus, the Winter season has resumed. While there were a few rusty players and many creaking joints, the hall was full of people enjoying being back at the table. With only 2 weeks left in the Winter season, we will soon be battling it out in the finals. After that, we have the 3 weeks that everyone looks forward to. 2018 MTTA CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS Our thoughts should now turn to the annual Club Championships coming up in August. Some players choose not to attend these nights, thinking that they’re not good enough to challenge for the honours. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Club Championships are designed to provide a level playing field for all club members. Week 1 on the 2nd of August is the Handicap Championship. Every player has a chance of winning this, regardless of your standing in the club. Each player is given a handicap ranking and matches are played up to 31 points. Some top players may start on 0 or even a negative points score, while the lower rated players may start on up to 25 points. -

März, ÖVB-Arena Bremen German Open 2018 in Bremen (20.-25. -

Olympic Media Notes: Friday 6Th August
Olympic Media Notes: Friday 6th August Day 13 Highlights: Thursday 5th August Women’s Team: Bronze Medal Hong Kong China (4) 3-1 Germany (3) A canny change of plan reaped success for Hong Kong. Previously Lee Ho Ching and Minnie Soo Wain Yam (HKG) had formed the doubles partnership; in the bronze medal encounter against Germany, Lee Ho Ching (HKG) paired with Doo Hoi Kem (HKG). It meant that Minnie Soo Wai Yam (HKG) would play the potential two singles matches. Significantly, in the second match, she would oppose the defensive skills of Han Ying (GER), a player Doo Hoi Kem (HKG) would have faced if continuing with the previous doubles order. Doo Hoi Kem (HKG) does not relish playing defenders. The Hong Kong coaches could be reasonably sure that the only doubles option for Germany was Shan Xiaona and Petrissa Solja (GER); neither was suited to complement Han Ying’s style of play, and they are the reigning European champions. Doo Hoi Kem and Lee Ho Ching (HKG) lost to Shan Xiaona and Petrissa Solja (8-11, 11-5, 11-7, 15-13). In the second match of the fixture, Minnie Soo Wai Yam (HKG) overcame the backspin skills of Han Ying (GER) in four games (12-10, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7) to turn the tide. Time and again, Germany has relied on Han Ying (GER) winning both her singles matches; for Germany, it was a significant blow. Doo Hoi Kem (HKG) proved too consistent for Petrissa Solja (GER), winning in straight games (11-5, 11-6, 11-9). -
