Bull Brothers – Robert and Henry
EMU PARK SOLDIERS OF WORLD WAR I – THE GREAT WAR FROM EMU PARK and SHIRE OF LIVINGSTONE The Bull Brothers – Robert and Henry Sergeant Robert Charles Bull (Service No. 268) of the 15th Infantry Battalion and 1st Battalion Imperial Camel Brigade Robert was born on 17th May 1895 in a railway camp at Boolburra, the 9th child and 3rd son to Henry and Maria (née Ferguson) Bull, both immigrants from the United Kingdom. Henry from Whaplode, Lincolnshire, arrived in Rockhampton in 1879 at the age of 19. Maria was from Cookstown, Tyrone, North Ireland, arrived in Maryborough, also in 1879 and also aged 19. Robert spent his early years at Bajool before joining the Railway Service as a locomotive cleaner. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) on 16 September 1914 at Emerald where he gave his age as 21 years & 4 months, when in fact he was only 19 years & 4 months. Private Bull joined ‘B’ Company of the 15th Infantry Battalion, 4th Brigade which formed the Australian and New Zealand Division when they arrived in Egypt. The 15th Infantry Battalion consisted on average of 29 Officers and 1007 Other Ranks (OR’s) and was broken up into the following sub units: Section Platoon Company Battalion Rifle section:- Platoon Headquarters Company Battalion 10 OR’s (1 Officer & 4 OR’s) Headquarters (2 Headquarters (5 Officers & 57 Officers & 75 OR’s) Lewis Gun Section:- 10 3 Rifle Sections and OR’s) OR’s and 1 Lewis gun Section 4 Companies 1 Light Machine Gun 4 Platoons He sailed for Egypt aboard the HMAT (A40) Ceramic on 22nd December 1914. -

Vigour, Rigour and Charisma: * the Remarkable Pompey Elliott, Soldier and Senator Ross McMullin Pompey Elliott was a remarkable character, a household name. Shortly after his return from the First World War he was elected to the Senate and remained there until his death. He contested two federal elections, in 1919 and 1925. Each time he was the first senator elected in Victoria. He was so famous during the 1920s that any Victorian schoolboy surnamed Elliott was liable to be nicknamed Pompey. His remarkable reputation, which enabled him to top the Senate poll in 1919, was of course built during the tumultuous preceding years when he commanded the 7th Battalion at Gallipoli and the 15th Brigade at the Western Front. Pompey was a charismatic, controversial and outstandingly successful military leader. He was Australia’s most famous fighting general, revered by his men and better known outside his own formation than any other Australian commander. My aim today is to give you a glimpse of what was so special about him. Imagine a big, hefty, fleshy bloke, 36 years of age in mid-1914, married with two kids. A solicitor, conscientious about his legal firm, but passionately interested in soldiering. Someone who was a fierce disciplinarian, who openly declared that he subjected his men to more rigorous and demanding training than any other battalion endured. Emu Park Soldiers of World War I – the Great War
EMU PARK SOLDIERS OF WORLD WAR I – THE GREAT WAR FROM EMU PARK and SHIRE OF LIVINGSTONE Private William Ahern (Service No. 254A) of the 42nd & 30th Infantry Battalions William was born on 10 October 1887 at Emerald, the 6th child of Michael Ahern who was working in the railway services and his wife Caroline (née Retchless). Michael accepted a railway job in Emu Park, hence the family moved to Phillip Street where William was raised, educated and worked as a labourer before enlisting in the AIF on 10th November 1915 at the age of 27 in Rockhampton. Private Ahern joined ‘B’ Company, 42nd Battalion, 11th Brigade, 3rd Australian Division that was encamped at Enoggera in Brisbane, Queensland. The 42nd Infantry Battalion consisted on average of 29 Officers and 1007 Other Ranks (OR’s) and was broken up into the following sub units: Section Platoon Company Battalion Rifle section:- Platoon Company Battalion 10 OR’s Headquarters (1 Headquarters (2 Headquarters (5 Officer & 4 OR’s) Officers & 57 Officers & 75 OR’s) Lewis Gun Section:- OR’s) 10 OR’s and 3 Rifle Sections and 4 Companies 1 Light Machine Gun 1 Lewis gun Section 4 Platoons He sailed for England on HMAT A30 Borda on 5th June 1916, then four months later to Armentiers in France near the Belgium boarder where he was transferred to the 30th Infantry Battalion, 8th Infantry Brigade, 5th Australian Division. While his battalion was defending Pozieres in 1916, William developed a severe case of “trench feet” and was hospitalised in England for close on six months. -

Napoleon's Heavy Cavalry, the Cuirassier and Carabinier: Their Arms, Armor, and Tactics Ricky E. Parrish Napoleon Bonaparte came to power in France after his coup of 18 Rmmaire year WIT (9 November 1799). Guided by his organizational genius, each branch of the French army- infantry, cavalry, and artillery-underwent a reorganization. Napoleon had definite ideas as to the role of each of these services, and he wanted to mold them into the most efficient army in Europe. According to Napoleon, there were four types of cavalry: scouts, light cavalry, dragoons, and Cuirus- siers (heavy cavalry).' On 17 September 1802, Napoleon ordered the heavy cavalry within the army to be reduced to twenty regiments: two Carabiniers and eighteen cuirassier^.^ (The Carabi- niers were elite heavy cavalry units), Originally, only six of these units were to be issued the cuirass; however, by the first problem was the weight of the weapon. Vision, Voice, and Audience in La Chartreuse de Parme Lottie Katz Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Lottie Katz All rights reserved ABSTRACT Vision, Voice, and Audience in La Chartreuse de Parme Lottie Katz This dissertation presents a close reading of Stendhal’s La Chartreuse de Parme, analyzing its written style, its themes, and the relationships between its numerous characters and narrative lines. Through a rigorous investigation of these factors, Stendhal’s explicit creative project emerges: the author’s desire to present himself as a storyteller in conversation with his reader. As storyteller, Stendhal applies himself to show rather than tell. In his narrative method first person often replaces the third; the story unfolds before the reader’s eyes as it would on a stage. The clarity and sobriety of Stendhal’s language becomes a vehicle for the vivid expressivity and dynamic energy that give rise to the Chartreuse’s blatant theatrical presentation. This analysis unfolds in five chapters and an epilogue, illuminating the foundations of Stendhal’s theatrical style. I. Caricature: The Rogues’ Gallery: An inquiry into the passages that present Stendhal at his satiric best. II. Sentence Structure: The stylistic characteristics that underpin theatrical presentation. III. The Emphasis on Time: Stendhal’s manipulation of narrative time facilitates the forward movement of the action; it is theatrical in the sense that there is a continuous flow of movement. IV. Architectural Structure: Enables the disparate components of the narrative to fit together, though there are a multitude.
