TOP U.S. DESTINATIONS FOR OVERSEAS VISITORS: WELCOMING FOREIGN FRIENDS

Many U.S. hotels, seeking a rebound from the deep decline during the recession, continue to work toward internationalizing their product and outlook to attract both European and Asian visitors. With the greatest growth in tourism seen among Chinese travelers, major hotel chains such as Hilton Worldwide Inc. and Starwood Hotels & Resorts World- wide are responding with special offerings including not only translation services but Chinese-speaking front desk assistance, Chinese food items and utensils, plus ritualistic in-room amenities such as tea service and slippers. Last year, 802,000 visitors from mainland China report- edly visited the U.S. over 2009 and the U.S. Department of Commerce estimates numbers to reach 994,000 in 2011.

AMERICANS TRAVELING TO ASIA: SEEING AN UPTURN

The first two quarters of 2011 were challenging for Asia tourism as earth- quakes and several typhoons shook the region. Despite these factors, Asia is still an up-and-coming region for American travelers and demand is rising as the region saw average prices paid for hotel rooms rise slightly, by 1%.

Hong Kong ranked as the eighth most visited overseas city by Americans in 2011 while other Asian cities including , , Beijing, Dubai and Singapore ranked in the top 25 most visited international destinations by Americans.

While New York’s wildly success- ful Broadway revival of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific closed its curtains in August 2010, it has likely inspired travel to French Poly- nesia ever since. One of the most expensive countries to visit in Asia, French Polynesia boasts three of the top five most expensive resort areas to find a hotel in the world, with Bora Bora again taking top honors with rooms averaging $802 a night, demonstrating a 37% year-over-year increase from 2010.

Christchurch, ’s devastating earthquake caused hotel prices to soar 38% due to the lack of hotel rooms available. International guest bookings dropped in February by 25% and only 10 of 33 hotels are open.

While New York has historically held the legendary title of “the city that never sleeps”, a recent online global survey determined that no city in the world sleeps less than Cairo, the strife-torn capital of Egypt, thereby earning it the title the “world’s most 24-hour city.” However, there’s no arguing the Arab Spring and continued regional turmoil had a profound effect on the region’s hotel industry.

Travelers looking for a luxury property can find great deals in Cairo and Beijing, where 5-star properties cost $204 and $206 respectively. Giza, Egypt, famous for the Great Sphinx and the Great Pyramid of Giza saw the largest regional

hotel room price drop in the first half of 2011 when prices plummeted 45% over last year. Amman, Jordan also saw room rates drop 10%. Doha, Qatar experienced a 30% decrease in room rates, however not due to civil unrest, but likely because the market has been saturated with new hotel properties.

Backpackers and travelers looking for deals should explore Asia’s lesser known hot spots including Hoi An, Vietnam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh and Chiang Mai, , before prices for hotel rooms in these emerging destinations skyrocket.

CARIBBEAN: STILL SIZZLING

Sandy white beaches, tropical fruit and crystal blue waters are what make the Carib- bean a hot spot for beach-goers. The region saw a 4% increase in average prices paid year-over-year as the average daily rate at hotels climbed to $207 in the first half of 2011.

The most expensive destinations across the Caribbean include St. Lucia, Bermuda, Aruba, and Turks and Caicos Islands. These areas include higher-end hotels and re- sorts attracting travelers who indulge in luxury. Prices for many of the hotels in resort markets are all-inclusive, meaning accommodations, meals, beverages, activities, gratuities, and taxes are all included in the room rate. [Insert beach image here]

Travelers looking for the best value for a beach vacation need to look no further than the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico (no passport required for U.S. citizens). Vacationers can find rooms in the Dominican Republic starting at $86 per room, per night, and in Puerto Rico for $117 per room, per night.

Soufriere, St. Lucia and Vieques, Puerto Rico saw the greatest increase in this year’s Caribbean region with hotel room rates rising 28% year-over-year. However the most expensive destination in the Caribbean in 2011 is Paradise Island, Baha- mas. Home to the popular water-wonderland, the all-inclusive Atlantis Resort, Paradise Island saw the cost of a hotel room rise from $372 per room, per night to $437 per room, per night. There’s no comparison to the jaw dropping price tag of the Atlantis Resort’s Bridge Suite which is famously one of the most expensive hotel rooms in the world, costing more than $20,000 per night.

Bermuda was one of the most expensive places to vacation in the Caribbean this year and is home to five of the ten most expensive resort areas in the Caribbean. Rooms in the resort areas of Hamilton, Southampton, Paget, and Bailey’s Bay av- eraged $376 per night.

The only Caribbean resort area to see over a 20% price drop in room rates was Frigate Bay, St. Kitts & Nevis.

Chapter 6: Prices Paid at Home and Away

Data collected on prices paid both at home and away display that travel- ers of various nationalities tend to spend more when abroad than when in their own countries. This is likely due to factors such as currency exchange rates and people’s willingness to increase expenditures in order to enjoy a more pleasurable and memorable stay.

Japanese travelers are the new top spenders when traveling abroad, paying an average of $176 per hotel room when they head overseas. Travelers from Japan are followed by those from Switzerland and Australia, who respectively spend $ 175 and $172 in other countries.

While U.S. travelers have dropped into fourth place, spend- ing an average of $171 per night on hotels overseas, this is still an increase from last year’s average of $160 per night. At the other end of the spectrum, travelers from Mexico spend the least when outside their own borders, parting with just $117 per night for hotel rooms.

Travelers from the U.S. are much thriftier hotel bookers when at home, spending $119 when traveling domestically. The biggest domestic spenders are from Switzerland, pay- ing an average of $220 in local Swiss hotels.

Travelers from India continue to be the lowest domestic spenders, with an average of $92 per room spent on hotels within their borders.

Australia had the largest price increase for domestic travelers since the 2010 Hotel Price Index, with a rise from $140 to $165 per room per night. Brazil came in at a close second with an increase from $144 to $168. The largest decrease in domestic spending per night was in Portugal, which fell from $114 to $105.

Several countries new to the September 2011 list that were absent in the 2010 list include China, Denmark, Austria, Finland, South Korea, New Zealand, Norway, and Switzerland.
