Gerber This dissertation is a biographical study of Moses Hayim Luzzatto (1707–1746 or 1747). It presents the social and religious context in which Luzzatto was variously celebrated as the leader of a kabbalistic-messianic confraternity in Padua, condemned as a deviant threat by rabbis in Venice and central and eastern Europe, and accepted by the Portuguese Jewish community after relocating to Amsterdam. -

Hindsight Graduate History Journal Vol. VI (Spring 2012) “THE LAW KNOWS NO HERESY”: JEWISH COMMUNAL AUTONOMY AND THE AMERICAN COURT SYSTEM By Jason Schulman Emory University On 15 April 1844, Judge David Lewis Wardlaw of Charleston, South Carolina’s Court of Common Pleas presided over a trial between two factions of synagogue Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim.1 The so-called “Organ Congregation” represented the temple’s more liberal group, which called for an abridged service, English sermon, and, most controversially, accompanying organ. The other group in the rift—the “Remnants”—was composed of the more traditional members of the congregation that ardently resisted these changes. The predominantly American-born reformers made the case that the more conservative congregation members were “intruders who had exercised the privileges of membership without right.”2 Although the in- fighting in Beth Elohim would later be recognized as paradigmatic of the tensions of Jewish life in America, it was hardly clear at the time that the rupture that had formed in the Charleston community was irreconcilable. Nor, as we shall see, was it a foregone conclusion that the resolution would be found in an American civil court. The schism, between the “Organ Congregation” and the “Remnants”, had developed several years before the court case in the 1840s.3 After the destruction of their synagogue in the Great Fire of 1838, Charleston’s Jews rebuilt Beth Elohim, laying the cornerstones in January 1 State of South Carolina ex relatione Abraham Ottolengui et al. v. Menachem Kellner Univeriry oj Haifa I was asked to respond to a group of articles on the subject, "Can There Be a Jewish Ethics?" and gladly undertook to do so. I was sent five won- derful articles, not one of which actually addressed the proposed topic head on. Lenn Goodman rejects the question as "uncivil" and explains elegantly why that is so. Norbert Samuelson dismisses the question as "uninteresting" and goes on to other issues which interest him more. The question is unin- teresting, he maintains, because the answer is "of course, why not." "Of course," because there is obviously a vast amount of Jewish ethical thought and writing. To the "why not?" reply Samuelson proposes two "uninterest- ing" philosophic answers: Jewish ethics is not universal and thus not ethics or Jewish ethics is universal and thus not Jewish. In order to understand Samuelson's point, a number of distinctions must be drawn. Three senses of the term "ethics" must be distinguished: desciptive eth- ics, normative ethics, and meta-ethics. The first describes what has in fact been taught about ethics. It is trivially true that there can be Jewish ethics in the descriptive sense, as pointed out by Kenneth Seeskin, Samuelson, and David Novak in their essays. There is a huge body of literature both ex- pressing and analyzing historically Jewish approaches to ethical questions. Normative ethics, on the other hand, seeks not to describe but to pre- scribe, not to tell us what others have said about moral issues, but to tell us what to do when confronted with these issues. -

It is difficult to bring coherence to apparently contradictory assertions: all the land was conquered yet much land remains to be taken; all the Canaanites are to be destroyed yet Israel lives amongst the Canaanites. Joshua is a challenging book theologically, as the promise of redemption comes about through war and conflict. The goal of this course is to provide a guide in understanding the book of Joshua in its literary intent and its theological message in dealing with the concepts of judgment and redemption. It is to provide guidance for living in a world that is torn by strife. Conference participants specified practices abrahamic alternatives within each of the three faith traditions that could lay the groundwork for nonviolent alternatives to resolving conflict and addressing injustice, while also identifying roadblocks in the sacred texts of their traditions to creating such processes. The to War scholars ’ teachings found that these ancient religious teachings on peace and justice are often consistent with modern conflict- resolution theory. This report examines passages that support violence in each tradition’s scripture, presents definitions of Jewish, Christian, and Muslim “just peacemaking” in each tradition, summarizes places of convergence that might create the foundation for a program perspectives on Just peacemaking offering an Abrahamic alternative to war and presents a joint statement and series of commitments reached at the end of the conference. Shalom: Peace, Not Just Peace of Mind Parashat Ki Tetze Rabbi Daniel Cotzin Burg, Beth Am 9.6.14 ~ 11 Elul 5774 This week I spent a day in Washington with thought-leaders, rabbis and policy analysts. We were speaking about Israel, America’s relationship with the Jewish state and the current deeply troubling state of affairs in the Middle East. The most surprising and powerful presentation of the day was that of Mosab Hassan Yousef, son of Sheikh Hassan Yousef, a founder and spiritual leader of Hamas. Given the events of this summer, it was particularly poignant to hear the heartfelt and courageous words of this young author and former Israeli asset (as he sat on the dais across from his Shin Bet handler). To even begin to conceive of such heroism, we almost have to transport ourselves into a different time – say Germany of the 1940s, when precious few righteous individuals resisted and acted against the scourge of Nazism. We might visit Rwanda or Cambodia, Darfur or America’s antebellum south. There are far too many examples in human history of pervasive, systematic violence and too few stories of those who made the hardest choices to turn against their fathers, brothers and their communities and attempt to salvage their dignity and humanity. Or perhaps we should roll the Torah back from its current location near the end, to a story near the very beginning whose hero, a simple man named Noah, is tzadik tamim haya b’dorotav, “a righteous man, blameless in his generation” (Gen. 6:9). I would argue it’s virtually impossible for us, most or all of us in this room, to know what it is like to live among the truly malevolent and depraved – a society so bad God sees no recourse but to erase it and start over. -

It provides the learning objectives that students are expected to meet; the units and lessons that teachers teach; the books, materials, technology and readings used in a course; and the assessments methods used to evaluate student learning. Some units have a large amount of material that on a given year may be modified in consideration of the Jewish calendar, lost school days due to weather (snow days), and give greater flexibility to the teacher to accommodate students’ pre-existing level of knowledge and skills. These musaguim cover the different aspects and levels of Jewish life. They can be divided into 4 concentric circles: inner circle – the day of a Jew, middle circle – the week of a Jew, middle outer circle – the year of a Jew, outer circle – the life of a Jew. The purpose of this course is to teach students about the different components of a Jewish day, the centrality of the Shabbat, the holidays and the stages of the life cycle. Focus will be placed on the Jewish traditions, rituals, ceremonies, and celebrations of each concept. Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, chief of the country, saw her and took her and forced her to lie with him. (Genesis 34:1-2) BACKGROUND: The narrative of the rape of Dina takes place immediately after Jacob and his family have returned to Jacob’s ancestral home in Canaan. We learn from the text that Dina goes out to “see the daughters of the land” and is raped by Shechem the Hivite, who then requests that she become his wife. Dina’s brothers are outraged to hear that their sister had been raped. The brothers trick the Hivites, promising that if the Hivites agree to be circumcised, then Dina and the daughters of Israel will be available to them. One the third day, when the Hivites were in pain from having been circumcised, Simeon and Levi snuck up on the Hivites and killed all the men of the city. When Jacob complained that Simeon and Levi’s actions would bring trouble to the house of Jacob, the sons answered, “Should our sister be treated like a whore?” The text raises many questions, most poignantly perhaps, why Dina is victimized by Shechem.
