Anderson, Pope Francis greeted and addressed this historic occasion at 8:57 a.m. local time at the Vatican today. “I am pleased to greet you, the members and directors of the American Pro Football Hall of Fame and welcome you to the Vatican. Teamwork, fair play and the pursuit of personal excellence are the values — in the religious sense, we can say virtues that have guided your commitment, on and off the field” said the Pope, the first ever Pontiff from South America and the first ever Jesuit Pontiff. “These values meet the needs of our brothers and sisters and combat the exaggerated individualism, indifference and injustice that hold us back from living as one human family”. His Holiness then personally greeted and blessed the Gold Jackets, their wives, Hall of Fame board members and their wives, Hall staff members, as well as dignitaries from the Knights of Columbus. COMMITMENT • INTEGRITY • COURAGE • RESPECT • EXCELLENCE Hunt offered the Pontiff the Hall’s support of a worldwide conference on sports and invited His Holiness to attend the Centennial Celebration in Canton, Ohio on September 17, 2020.     THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 28, No. 2 (2006) WHEN HAVING A BETTER RECORD DIDN'T MEAN HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE, Part Two By Andy Piascik With the NFL-AFL merger in 1966 and the advent of the Super Bowl, pro football's postseason began to grow larger. Neither the NFL or AFL addressed the long-standing problem of how better to determine the home team in their respective Championship Games, however. In fact, almost another decade would go by until necessary changes were made. Instead, both leagues continued with the rotation system that had ruled pro football's postseason since 1933. And as happened so many times previously, the teams that finished with the best regular season record in both leagues in 1966, the Packers and the Chiefs, had to go on the road in the title games. Bucking the odds clearly established over the previous 33 years, both won. Even when the NFL realigned in 1967 and enlarged the playoffs, the same system was left intact. Again, evidence that something was amiss was immediately apparent. That year, the Rams finished 11-1-2 and won the Coastal Division of the Western Conference on the basis of a head to head tie-breaker over the Colts, who also finished 11-1-2. In the West's Central Division, meanwhile, the Packers finished first at 9-4-1. Despite their superior record and even though they had beaten Green Bay in their regular season meeting, the Rams had to travel to Wisconsin to play the Western Conference Championship Game. After beating the Packers two weeks earlier in Los Angeles, the Rams lost and went home while the Packers went on to win the Super Bowl.

    All-Gator Bowl Team Based Off Gator Bowl Performance OFFENSE Quarterback (Vote for 1) Matt Cavanaugh (Pittsburgh QB 1975 – 1977) Pitt exploded for 566 total yards and a record 30 first downs. Cavanaugh threw for 387 yards and 4 touchdowns to shoulder his team’s offense and lead them to a win over the South Carolina Gamecocks. Chip Ferguson (Florida State QB 1985 – 1988) The Seminoles accounted for 597 yards of total offense in 1985 and 338 came via QB Chip Ferguson’s arm. He added 2 touchdowns as the Seminoles would go on to defeat the Oklahoma State Cowboys 34-23. Kim Hammond (Florida State QB 1965 – 1967) Penn State looked to put the 1967 Gator Bowl away early, and by the looks of the first half they succeeded. Penn State took a comfortable 17-0 lead into halftime. Kim Hammond simply took over in the second half. Hammond completed 37 passes for 362 yards, both records that eclipsed former FSU quarterback Steve Tensi. Hammond scored twice; once on the ground and once through the air. 14 of his completions were to his favorite target, Ron Sellers, who caught for 145 yards. The Seminoles stormed back and nailed a field goal with 15 seconds left to end the game in a 17-17 tie. Graham Harrell (Texas Tech QB 2005 – 2008) Harrell had one of the most successful Gator Bowl performances against the Virginia Cavaliers. He set the bowl record in passing attempts (69), completions (44), and yards gained (407). He threw for 3 touchdowns to lead the Red Raiders to a 38-35 victory over the Cavaliers and was named game MVP.
