Foreword

For many years now the recording and protection afforded to the historic environment has been bound within the provisions of a number legislative Acts of Parliament. Indeed, the Vale of Glamorgan has over 100 Scheduled Ancient Monuments, over 700 Listed Buildings and 38 Conservation Areas that are afforded statutory protection by legislation.

However, this system of statutory recognition, by its nature, only takes account of items of exceptional significance. Often there are locally important buildings that although acknowledged not to be of ‘national’ or ‘exceptional’ importance, are considered key examples of vernacular architecture or buildings, which have an important local history. It is these buildings which are often the main contributors to local distinctiveness, but which have to date, remained un-surveyed and afforded little recognition or protection.

The original County Treasures project was published by the then South Glamorgan County Council in the late 1970’s. It was conceived as a locally adopted inventory of ‘special features’ in the former County area.

However, as a result of local government restructuring, the changes to local authority boundaries, as well as changes in responsibilities and funding mechanisms the survey was never completed, and as a consequence was not comprehensive in its coverage.

In the three decades that have passed since the original survey was attempted, the loss of a number of local buildings and landmarks, and the redevelopment of unprotected sites make the County Treasures project as relevant today as it was then. This publication is the culmination of the efforts of many individuals and groups who have been generously giving of their knowledge, time and commitment over a nearly ten year period, and without whom the County Treasures project would never have been possible. To all those involved, I extend my heart felt thanks in recognition of a job well done.

We should be proud, therefore, that this version of the County Treasures survey is complete, robust and comprehensive. It is in another respect even more valuable than its predecessor, in that this Inventory has not been compiled by the local authority, but by the communities of the Vale themselves.

Each of the 27 community areas within the Vale were surveyed by a volunteer workforce of local people, teachers, history society members, local Councillors and other interested individuals, who gave willingly and freely of their time to reveal and record the very many items that could conceivably be of architectural and historic interest; and which, further to detailed scrutiny, research and qualification, were considered worthy of inclusion. This inventory, therefore, more than any other provides an account of what is considered of local importance by local people.

The complete Treasures Inventory contains some 1200 entries. It contains a schedule giving the name of each treasure, its description, its current means of statutory protection (where relevant), a grid reference, map and photograph.

This 2007 Inventory should not however be seen as a ‘final product’, and although it indeed provides an excellent account and record at a fixed point in time, it also provides a framework for future additions and amendments, as more or new buildings become apparent, new information or change occurs.

i It is hoped that the Vale of Glamorgan County Treasures Inventory will serve several purposes: • It will stimulate local, and wider interest, and promote care and maintenance of identified treasures. • It will act as a valuable educational resource, perhaps allowing local schoolchildren to research locally as well as nationally significant events and buildings. • It will ensure that treasures are fully regarded in the planning process where they are threatened by development pressures. • It will stimulate protectionist policies within forthcoming development plans and perhaps the recognition of further areas for statutory designation.

Every attempt has been made to ensure that this document is as accurate as possible. The survey was undertaken between 2002 and 2007.

Former three-door byre shown on the St. Brides Major Tithe Map of 1840. Later converted to stables with a carriage bay to the left. The stonework for the wide arched opening to the carriage bay has been reused from elsewhere. The form suggests that it was originally a narrow two-centred archway, perhaps from the site of the old castle. The range is still used as stables.Listed as a good example of Victorian stables, converted from a former byre. The medieval stonework of the wide arched opening is of additional interest.

The present ruins of Dunraven Castle were built in 1802-06 by Thomas Wyndham of Clearwell Castle, Gloucestershire as a hunting seat. It was remodelled in 1858 by Egbert Moxham, when the central tower was replaced by a conservatory and the North and South wings were raised. It was extended with a tower and wing on the seaward side by George Devey in 1806-08. The Castle was demolished in 1862, having been used as a hotel and only the footings survive. The entrance gateway is C19 and may be contemporary with the rebuilding. It is an important landmark.

Tudor-Gothic style lodge of two storeys. The lodge is contemporary with the rebuilding of Dunraven Castle in 1802-6. It is possible that the mullioned windows come from the earlier manor house. Said to have had a Tudor-arched doorway in a lean-to to the North West. Central gatehouse flanked by low tower to the West, and link range and tall slender tower to the East. The gatehouse has a rectangular plan, whilst the towers are octagonal and are set forward into the park. Flanking masonry walls form the boundary to the park. The towers and parapets are embattled with machicolations.

An irregular headland, circa 400m E-W by 100-300m, rising 60m above the sea, is isolated by a steep-sided cwm on the NE; double banks and ditches define the landward side, obscured by Dunraven Castle on the SE and curving to meet the cliffline on the NW, where there is an additional bank. There are at least 21 possible roundhouse sites, circa 6.0m in diameter, within.

P a th (u m ) An exceptional garden of unusually early origin, probably C16. The boundary walls of the garden may be contemporary with the medieval manorhouse at Dunraven. They are shown in an engraving of the house dated 1776. A stable block was built against the West end of the gardens in 1803, but is now demolished. The dividing walls and other features within the garden are C19, mainly later than 1877. The gardens themselves consist of a series of four square gardens in a line, orientated East - West and within a common boundary wall, they are; the Victorian kitchen garden; the fruit garden; the plant hunter's garden and the Tudor garden.

A very rare survival of a horse-gin powered pump with winding mechanism, in an agricultural and estate setting. Central stone well with circular shaft. The iron winding mechanism is preserved above and is gear-driven. Pump house of octagonal plan, with partially collapsed hipped roof. Roughly coursed masonry with quoins, slate-covered roof.

Pump Seamouth Lodge A well preserved C17 picturesque cottage in a fine historic setting. Two-unit cottage of one and a half storeys. Rubble masonry under a thatched roof with eyebrow dormers to front. Still owned by the Dunraven family and recently renovated and re-thatched. Once the "Bath House" for the castle (an old version of taking a shower after bathing).

An exceptionally well preserved single-storey Gothic-style lodge of random masonry construction and slate roof. A semi-octagonal gate pier with swept pyramidal cap is built into the South West angle of the lodge which forms the North side of a pedestrian gateway into the Park.

Round tower of rubble stone with embattled parapets and machicolations. Raised floor, with ice-house in semi-basement. Tall windows with stone dressings and trefoiled heads to North West, South East and South West. An unusual structure of great character.

Originally a farmhouse probably of C18 origin, shown on a survey of the Dunraven Estate of circa 1779. The roof appears to have been raised, and the house remodelled in the early C19. The farmhouse itself is two-storey with single storey range to the East. Walls are rendered over masonry, slate roof, stone end stacks.

Ogmore Farm Norman motte and bailey castle of earth and timber established by William de Londres. The stone keep was constructed in the early C12 and is one of the earliest of its type. The Castle consists of an oval shaped ring work surmounted by masonry structures. The curtain wall, remaining internal structures, gateway and bridge were built in the early C13. The Castle was still held by the descendants and successors of de Londres, until 1298 when Maud de Chaworth married Henry Lancaster. The Castle remained in the hands of the Duchy of Lancaster until it was taken over by the crown in 1399. It was then abandoned and part demolished, to allow for the construction of a courthouse which is attributed to Lancaster. It is said to have been rebuilt in 1454-5, possibly as a chapel rather than a courthouse (it is labelled 'chapel' on the Ordnance Survey of 1885). The Castle was still in use in the 1530s, but had been in decay for many years by 1631.

70 4m Hotel by J. P. Seddon, his first work in Glamorgan. Constructed in 1852-3 by J. Brown of Stoke’s Croft, Bristol, for £1,339. A series of perspectives, plans, elevations, sections and details are held in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Gothic-revival in style the building comprises seven-bays and is of two storeys with an attic. Originally known as the Dunraven Arms Hotel (later the Southerndown Hotel), it was purpose built for the summer visitors to Southerndown. In its early years it was a popular hotel with Southerndown Golf Club and local residents. During the C20, the hotel was sold and became the Welsh Sunshine Home for Blind Babies. Much alteration was undertaken to the interior during this period.

Good example of a compact Gothic style chapel in its own enclosure, gabled entrance front faces North. The Calvinistic Methodists are said to have first met at St. Bride’s Major in 1794 at Pen Ucha Dre Farm. A chapel was erected in the village in 1824, though it is not clear whether it was on the same site as the current chapel, which was built in 1859 at a cost of £400 through the endeavours of the Rev. Edward Matthews. It would seem that the first full-time minister was the Rev. Charles Williams who was inducted to the pastorate in 1883.

R klih Imposing church of mainly perpendicular style with some surviving Norman features. Church comprises nave, chancel, North porch, two-stage West tower, embattled parapet, pinnacles, and two-light bell-chamber openings. Established in 1141 and given to Ewenny Priory by the Lord of Ogmore, the Church was heavily restored by Egbert Moxham of Neath in 1854 at a cost of £1,000. This included replacement windows, the addition of the vestry and porch, a new nave roof, and new furnishings. The rood screen was removed at this time. The Church contains an exceptional group of memorials and effigies, many associated with Dunraven.

An exceptionally well preserved example of a C16 medieval preaching cross, with polygonal shaft and head, hipped square socket on high base of 6 square steps. Pilgrims knelt in prayer on the stone steps, and farm workers are said to have sharpened their sickles on them. Said to have been damaged during Cromwell’s time. Restored in 1985.

The attics were school rooms, and this use was resumed in WWII. A lower range to the West was a cart shed and stables, the former now used as a tack room.

Prior to the development of bee hives in the late C19, bees were kept in skeps made of wicker-work or coiled straw. In exposed areas the skips were given some protection from the elements by placing them in purpose built recesses known as bee boles. The majority of surviving bee boles in Wales are built of stone and are very difficult to date. It is thought that these at Blackhall Farm are probably C18. There are three tiers of four bee boles, each designed to take a single skep. Built of stone on a random rubble base, with stone slab sills.

Pond An unusual and well preserved example of a C18 bridge using an ancient form of construction. Low, rubble stone clapper bridge, with slightly ramped deck circa 1m wide. Five small openings are visible for the passage of water, each with flat heads.

A story handed down through time describes how the monks of Margam Abbey from time to time became too well acquainted with local women. King's Wood

Ty Maen Farm is on the furthest boundary of the parish of St. Brides Major and although modernised the original fireplace can be seen in the living room and kitchen. The stone staircase rises above the fireplace. The entrance from outside is a narrow passage. Early C17 in origin the farmhouse comprises a three-unit, chimney-backing-on-the-entry house.
