In the present study, we hypothesized that birds, regardless of their main habitats, must have frequent contact with water and that tissues that contain their DNA that persists in the environment (environmental DNA; eDNA) could be used to detect the presence of avian species. To this end, we applied a set of universal PCR primers (MiBird, a modifed version of fsh/mammal universal primers) for metabarcoding avian eDNA. We confrmed the versatility of MiBird primers by performing in silico analyses and by amplifying DNAs extracted from bird tissues. Analyses of water samples from zoo cages of birds with known species composition suggested that the use of MiBird primers combined with Illumina MiSeq could successfully detect avian species from water samples. Additionally, analysis of water samples collected from a natural pond detected fve avian species common to the sampling areas. The present fndings suggest that avian eDNA metabarcoding would be a complementary detection/identifcation tool in cases where visual census of bird species is difcult. Environmental DNA (eDNA) is genetic material that persists in an environment and is derived from organ- isms living there, and researchers have recently been using eDNA to detect the presence of macro-organisms, particularly those living in aquatic/semiaquatic ecosystems1–5. -

Drawing from critical scholarship in dance literature, zoo studies, human-animal studies, posthuman philosophy, and experiential/somatic field studies, this work utilizes choreographic engagement, with the topography and inhabitants of the Toronto Zoo and the Berlin Zoologischer Garten, to investigate the potential for kinaesthetic exchanges between human and nonhuman subjects. BIRDS AT WOODLAND PARK ZOO PRE-VISIT INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS If you are planning a zoo field trip and wish to have your students focus on birds during their visit, this pre-visit sheet can help them get the most out of their time at the zoo. We have put together an overview of key concepts related to birds, a list of basic vocabulary words, and a checklist of bird species at Woodland Park Zoo. Knowledge and understanding of these main ideas will enhance your students’ zoo visit. OVERVIEW: There are over 10,000 species of birds currently identified worldwide, inhabiting a number of different biomes and exhibiting a range of adaptations. Woodland Park Zoo exhibits a wide variety of bird species (see attached checklist) in several different areas of the zoo. A bird field trip to the zoo could focus on the characteristics of birds (see “Concepts” below), comparing/contrasting different birds or learning about biomes and observing the physical characteristics of birds in different biomes. CONCEPTS: Birds share the following physical characteristics: Feathers Endothermic (warm-blooded) Eggs with shell and yolk Lack teeth, but have bony beaks Lightweight skeleton, bones with air spaces Good vision Adaptations for flight: Low body weight Streamlined form Efficient metabolism Specialized respiration and circulation Birds, like all plants and animals, have five basic needs to survive—food, water, shelter, air and space. They inhabit every continent on the planet and range in size from the bee hummingbird at 0.05 ounces (1.6 grams) to the North African ostrich at 275 pounds (125 kilograms). -

The body mass of the dodo has been particularly contentious, with the flightless pigeon alternatively reconstructed as slim or fat depending upon the skeletal metric used as the basis for mass prediction. Resolving this dichotomy and obtaining a reliable estimate for mass is essential before future analyses regarding dodo life history, physiology or biomechanics can be conducted. Previous mass estimates of the dodo have relied upon predictive equations based upon hind limb dimensions of extant pigeons. Yet the hind limb proportions of dodo have been found to diVer considerably from those of their modern relatives, particularly with regards to midshaft diameter. Therefore, application of predictive equations to unusually robust fossil skeletal elements may bias mass estimates. We present a whole-body computed tomography (CT) -based mass estimation technique for application to the dodo. -

Several hypotheses have been proposed as to how hystricognath rodents colonized this island continent. Most require that a small group of these rodents traveled across ocean bodies atop a raft of mangroves or driftwood. The most common hypothesis suggests that the ancestor to all modern caviomorphs rafted across the Atlantic Ocean (then narrower) from Africa (Lavocat, 1969; Huchon and Douzery, 2000). This is supported by molecular results, which suggest that the Phiomorpha (as restricted to Bathyergidae, Petromuridae, and Thryonomyidae) are sister taxa to the Caviomorpha. In fact, until the discovery of the Laotian rock rat, all modern hystricognath families were restricted to South America, Africa, or had a range that included Africa (Hystricidae). The principal alternative hypothesis is that the caviomorph ancestor arose in Asia and migrated to South America through another continent. Most commonly, North America is cited as the most likely continent (Wood, 1985) as connections between North America and Asia were common via Beringia, and North America appears to have been closer to South America than any other continent at this 8 time. -

Biology 203 Lab 2 Phylogenetic Trees In today’s lab you will be constructing two phylogenetic trees using the maximum likelihood method and two mitochondrial genes. Rather than selecting a model of evolution and adjusting statistical parameters, as is typical when building a phylogeny using maximum likelihood, you will be using a simpler “one click” method. Background The Dodo (Raphus cucullatus) was a flightless bird native to the island of Mauritius. It became extinct in the 1600’s and is one of the most famous examples of human-induced extinction. Having evolved in the absence of significant predators, it was fearless of humans and was extirpated by a combination of hunting and nest predation by human-introduced pigs, monkeys, cats, rats, and dogs. It has been variously suggested that Dodo’s were a type of parrot, ostrich, rail, albatross, or vulture (Owen 1846). Theodore Reinhardt suggested that it was most closely related to pigeons, which was later supported after the examination of the Oxford museum specimen (Strickland and Melville 1848). While this theory has been generally accepted, the complete evolutionary history of the Dodo remained unknown until recently. Bird survey included nine repetitions of point count (at 16 points 150 m apart), six days (12 hours each) of mist netting, and 30 McKinnon lists of 20 species. We mist netted individuals of 23 species in Wanang 1 and 37 species in Wanang 3. During the morning point-counts, we recorded 3358 individuals of 82 species in Wanang 1 and 11516 individuals of 122 species in Wanang 3. Altogether we recorded 99 species in slightly disturbed Wanang 1(on the border of conservation area) and 131 species during long-term survey in deep forest of Wanang 3. Here we bring the list of recorded species and information about few of them. We hope that this booklet will be useful for visitors of Wanang area and to villagers.
